Hybrid Edge/Cloud Computing
As data generation rates explode, many companies rely on edge computing as much as the cloud
Cloud computing has brought us important new benefits by enabling remote file sharing and collaboration and providing access to nearly infinite compute power. But it does have limitations. Security risks mean that some data, like personal health information, can’t be sent over the network. Mission-critical services like autonomous vehicles and machinery can’t risk the possibility of even short-term network failure. But the biggest issue is that the network simply can’t handle all the data we’re creating. While bandwidth speeds are increasing gradually, there has been an explosion of data created at the edge, thanks to the IoT, smart cars, mobile devices, ubiquitous cameras, and the increasing digitization of industries. It’s neither possible nor cost-effective to send all that data through the network. HP Fellow Bruce Blaho makes the point that we need to move the compute power to the data, not the other way around. And that will make a combination of hybrid and edge computing essential over the next decade.
