This session will share a recent project that incorporates custom families into an early design project. The families have engineering built into them such that they essentially design themselves once placed in the project. Then, with changes to particular items in the project, the families update their designs in real-time, and the model then updates as well. In addition, the elements are scheduled, with approximated construction cost. This model was created for a client to use as a tool for making design decisions. This client builds a great deal of similar structures and wanted a way to visualize how various design decisions may affect things like ceiling heights, cost, and so on. This session will show how the custom families were created and how the project was modeled.

Two years ago, Skanska developed an Asset Management Information Strategy service offering, largely in response to clients and owners starting to ask questions about (and in some cases, requiring deliverables aligned to) achieving day-one operational readiness for their computer-aided facility management (CAFM) and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) technology. In our journey, we’ve encountered an infinite number of client-operational environments, from spreadsheets and email to significant investments in complex CAFM, CMMS, and Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) and Building Management System (BMS) platforms. What we’ve learned is that regardless of the destination facilities management environment, all of these conversations start with developing an information strategy. And we will cover how to develop a technology implantation plan and conduct a tech rollout.

This lab will walk students through an introduction to some advanced AutoLISP concepts and practices. Students will get a taste of reactors, VBA-style programming in AutoLISP, and advanced function and processes.

In this hands-on lab you will learn how to customize a drawing style to suit your specific requirements for detail drawings, taking into account what should be shown in detail, how should it be shown, labels, and dimensions to be created. We will walk through the workflow of configuring drawing styles using the Drawing Styles Manager interface, with an explanation of existing options and settings. We will configure and use model objects, labels, and dimensions in specific scenarios. This class will include configuration and workflow recommendations for an efficient way of using drawing styles. Please note that this class is suitable for intermediate and advanced users only.

This course will present case studies of resident projects that were fabricated at the Autodesk Technology Centers. These case studies will focus on the robotic workflows for AEC, describing both the robotic software (examples include Autodesk Maya, Machina, ABB RobotStudio, PowerMill) and the challenges overcome from troubleshooting physical constraints. Attendees will gain knowledge in various approaches to robotic fabrication and how this informs the move to automate fabrication at the construction site. Case studies examples: Perkins and Will’s Mass timber pavilion fabrication utilizing workflow of suction grippers, drills, saws and nail guns; Mad Workshop’s Arroyo Bridge- a 75 ft pedestrian bridge utilizing a robot to position 600 steel members in unique places for a manual welding process; AI SpaceFactory’s MARSHA -a 15 ft structure made from biopolymer basalt composite utilizing additive workflow; and Apis Cor’s 3-D printed 2-story, 12,000 sq. ft concrete building.

This class will cover the story and the key technicalities of My Home Experience, an ambitious project that is replacing “normal” decorated apartments by customizable virtual reality (VR) ones all across Brazil. We will start by showing off how a partnership between IM Designs and MRV is helping change the way people experience their dream homes. We’ll then dive into how to prepare your data set to fit your immersive technology (XR) hardware. For that, we’ll show how we solved performance and hardware limitation issues while achieving incredibly realistic looks through a series of optimization techniques in 3ds Max software, and we’ll explain their impact on real-time rendering. You’ll gain info about light baking, UVs, retopology, RTT for baking AO, normals, and more. On the hardware side, we’ll see how those techniques affect your GPU, CPU, and memory, and how to profile them to boost rendering performance. We’ll then finish by showing off the final implementation in untethered VR, and its challenges. We hope everyone learns a lot from our case.

This session will focus on transfer of steel fabrication elements from Revit software to Advance Steel software and back. There have been many changes in recent years, so for users and managers of these systems, it is sometimes difficult to understand the background process being used. Therefore, we’ll focus upon the various database types, tables, and locations, and what’s used for which parts of the process, so users can understand how to manage this operation in both platforms to achieve a successful collaboration. We’ll see how the correct use of the mapping database and creation of elements in both software systems, as a management operation, enables a smooth transfer, which is very important in multidisciplinary organizations—so CAD managers understand the need for this processing. Have correct Revit families created to the steel fabrication format, materials identified and mapped, and connection instances created.

When it comes to consistent and precise corridor design, it’s all about knowing where you’re going before you even start, especially when it comes to generating accurate earthwork quantities and surfaces that could be handed over for construction purposes. We’ll go over many questions to think about before pushing that assembly through your entire project. We’ll dive into opinions on out-of-the-box subassemblies versus creating your own custom subassemblies, and review some key ones that we’ve created to help streamline the design process. We’ll then cover setting up codes set styles not only to help visualize surface creation but also materials that we can use for quantities. Next, we’ll look at different approaches to modeling unique design elements, and when to throw in the towel on others. We’ll also review surface creation of not only proposed ground but also areas for removal, to help with more-accurate quantities when utilizing tin subtraction and/or average end area.
