As a virtual design and construction (VDC) manager for a general contractor (GC), one of the largest headaches is making sure your subcontractors get their models uploaded to your Autodesk Construction Cloud hub on time, and that they're named correctly and in the right format to make Model Coordination work seamlessly. What if it didn't have to be that way? If your subcontractors also happened to be working in Autodesk Construction Cloud, it doesn't have to be. What if they just published their own models internally and all the sharing happened automatically? This class will cover how to use the Bridge tool in Autodesk Construction Cloud to enable automatic sharing of models between Autodesk Construction Cloud hubs to streamline model coordination. Not only will we cover how to share models from the subcontractor's hub to the GC hub and then on into your coordination NWF, but we'll also show you how to share models from one subcontractor to another to enable direct coordination between subcontractor Revit models.

This presentation will detail how Clayco has used the "Punch as You Build" process to streamline the usage of checklists and issues for quality-control tracking within the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform (BIM 360 and Autodesk Build). We'll not only cover how we've standardized issue types and subtypes across the enterprise (from early design to construction and even warranty), but also how we employ standard checklist and issue workflows across our 100+ concurrent projects. When implementing new technology, an assured way to miss buy-in across your organization is to sign team members up and say, "Good luck!” Training is the obvious answer to this problem. However, designing, implementing, and executing a training program is a heavy lift, and justifying the commitment is paramount. To do so, it's vital to measure success through data: Locations and geos trained, project value in geographic area, and, of course, the number of individuals trained. The value of training doesn't end there. Our program instills our companywide vision of doing business. It deepens relationships with Autodesk, creating a partnership that tackles our big issues together. These relationships directly guide feature developments at Autodesk. At this session, learn from Ryan Riley, virtual design and construction (VDC) manager at Barton Malow Builders (BMB), on how he developed the ACC Roadshow Training Program at BMB across 16 offices, and 10 states, while tackling extremely local, specific problems.

Projects today need one or several persons to ensure that digitalization, data flow, collaboration, and intelligent models are set up and working. This session will discuss the most-common roles—digital collaboration manager, building information modeling (BIM) manager, and BIM coordinator—and the expectations and responsibilities of these different roles. In addition, we'll look at how Fornebubanen Metro has standardized how nine different BIM coordinators work, how we've managed their different personalities to fit with the standardization, and how they've advanced in practice through a project that has lasted for 12 years and has 10,000 models in BIM 360 and 12 federated models in Navisworks software. We'll see how their work has ensured a model-based project from start to finished construction, and how important their roles are to connect the design to construction. Their work has taken model-based construction to a new level, ensuring more value for all parts of the project.

tallyCAT is a new, free, Revit sustainability plug-in from Building Transparency that helps you analyze and reduce the climate impact of Revit designs in real time, generate LEED and ICMS reports, and make scale sustainable design across an office or practice. First shown at Autodesk University 2022, tallyCAT is now field-tested. It has robust reuse and library features to save labor, 3D visualization of the component you're working on, and industry-reviewed calculators that help detail complex assemblies like composite floors, stud walls, and curtain walls. A custom library system lets you share and reuse assemblies without having to redo work. 3D printing has become increasingly popular on construction sites, allowing firms to facilitate the construction process and decrease carbon footprint. It's a challenging exercise, due to the size of elements and the fact that they can't be reinforced, nor can the finishes be easily achieved. In order to democratize 3D printing, the decision was made to tackle the problem differently. The creation of 3D-parametric-printed formworks, urban furniture, or complex beam nodes/intersection is automated. This enables the reduction of production time and costs, as these elements can be produced in an infinite quantity and easily mounted on site. It also enables carbon footprint reduction by getting rid of wooden formworks and trucks for concrete pouring, and reducing the waste and time involved in creating those elements. The use of parametric elements to create these objects allows a full customization and replication. A deployment kit has been created for their subcontractors. Spie batignolles is becoming the first contractor-printer!

This class will discuss the uses of Revit families, data, scheduling, and the Revit API to push Revit content to the prefabrication factory floor. We'll discuss what goes into the families, how we condition the families for prefabrication-specific content, and how we pull that content out with custom tools to send to the factory floor. We'll cover the main issues of communication between the design team and the prefabrication team, how we've solved these issues, what we output for the team, and how they use it to create the preconstruction packages.

This session will discuss a company's successful shift from 2D construction to 3D construction. By capitalizing on advanced digital technology, the company was able to transform its traditional 2D construction process into a more efficient and accurate 3D construction process. The new 3D process involves the creation of detailed 3D models using building information modeling (BIM) software, which allows for improved visualization, coordination, and communication between different stakeholders. The use of 3D models enables the company to detect and resolve potential design clashes, constructability issues, and conflicts between building systems before the construction phase, resulting in significant time and cost savings. Furthermore, the use of 3D models allows for more-accurate quantity takeoffs, material planning, and construction scheduling. By implementing 3D construction, the company is able to improve project quality, speed, and cost savings while maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.

VINCI Construction aims for data reliability and security along with enhancing team productivity. VINCI developed an Autodesk Platform Services-powered hub that connects Autodesk tools within a unified and ergonomic web environment. VINCI is still accelerating the harnessing of Autodesk technologies to supply customized tools for internal needs and strategy. First, we will present the new Autodesk Platform Services integration that enables automation using Autodesk Platform Services along with open-source technologies, a perfect combination to achieve VINCI's inclusive digital transformation. Additionally, we will give insights into how these technologies simplify building information modeling (BIM) integration at various organizational levels, fostering on-site collaboration and cross-organizational efficiency. Then, we will present the project ROI and discuss its role in overcoming industry fragmentation and lack of productivity. Finally, we will showcase our data-harnessing approach through our internal hub using Autodesk technologies and cloud platforms.

With rising material costs and razor-thin margins, construction takeoff—including accurate material quantification and cost estimates—is essential to starting and executing jobs on budget and on time. Autodesk Takeoff, with centralized 2D and 3D takeoffs, allows estimating teams to update quantities in real time, using the most up-to-date design files. By connecting existing building information modeling (BIM) data, Autodesk Takeoff can reduce takeoff and estimating times by 25% or more, minimize the risk of missed quantities, and guarantee accurate data capture. In this technical instruction, Edwin Bailey (senior preconstruction technology manager at Skanska) will showcase the workflows, techniques, and best practices for using Autodesk Takeoff, with real-world examples from Skanska's Class A Montrose project in Houston, Texas, among other examples.

An often-overlooked sustainability challenge in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is: What should we do with all existing individual houses? Current technology enables sustainable design of new houses. However, climate change cannot be addressed without tackling the existing building stock. More than 62 million single-family houses need thorough renovation if we are to fulfill the EU climate ambitions by 2050. This means tackling 6,000 houses per day, starting today—in Europe alone! We'll demonstrate how artificial intelligence (AI), and generative design will support building owners and architects to quickly come up with new sustainable design options, ready for industrialized prefabrication with standardized elements. In this session, you'll learn how AI can add flexibility in the design with standardized elements. You'll find inspiration for a new balance between standardization and flexibility. We'll show applications for detached houses as well as terraced houses with complex shapes and requirements.

Architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals want to create cost-effective, sustainable projects and are looking for technologies, standards, and processes to help them make trade-offs between financial and environmental costs during design and preconstruction. Forward-looking firms—including Walsh Construction and SNHA (a Woolpert Company)—took part in a pilot to test new integration between Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) and Autodesk Takeoff, the 2D and 3D quantification solution. Using quantities from Autodesk Takeoff, EC3 users can review the embodied carbon emissions of proposed building materials. Further, it can connect the quantities and carbon emissions to the International Cost Management Standard (ICMS), a framework that provides mythology for reporting and for classifying project costs and carbon emissions in a structured format. Mandai Bird Park Project is an innovative sustainable-construction initiative in Singapore designed to create Asia's largest bird park in a 23-hectaire nature reserve. The design consists of eight massive walk-through aviaries inspired by diverse habitats, 20-meter-tall waterfalls, and an 84-meter-long archway. As part of the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan, the team had to keep in mind sustainability and preservation goals to minimize changes to the original landscape topology, preserve existing flora and fauna, and replicate a tropical landscape incorporated within the architecture. This intensified the overall construction complexity. The class will show how we fully used building information modeling (BIM) as a single source of truth, reality capture. and cloud platforms, including drone mapping, laser scanning, and 3D surface modeling with Revit, Navisworks, Dynamo, and ReCap software throughout the virtual design and construction (VDC) implementation. This saved us 30% in survey costs, achieved 100% reuse of excavated soil, and prevented the aviaries from clashing with the trees.

After the fall of Kabul in August 2021, the U.S. military launched Operation Allies Welcome to provide housing for 15,000+ Afghan allies in 200+ military barracks in the United States. The program concluded successfully in February 2022, following the departure of the Afghan guests. These bases had been in service for decades, so wear and tear on the barracks was significant and required expedited remediation to return to military service in 2023. This is where APTIM—a global provider of services to the government, commercial, industrial, and energy and utility markets—came in and restored the buildings for use. This presentation highlights how APTIM used the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform to win the job and collaborate seamlessly. Through the implementation of Autodesk Build, SiteSense, and Esri ArcGIS Field Maps, APTIM's multidisciplinary team captured 25,000+ issues, quantified them as recommended repairs in its estimate, and converted those issues into 25,000+ successfully completed work items.

Construction 4.0 is emerging: Technology is now available at low cost, disruption is everywhere, and digital transformation has replaced digitization. Over the last 20 years, building information modeling (BIM) has changed how our industry operates and interacts through all phases of design and construction. While our industry has taken steps forward by implementing BIM, there are still many inefficient processes and still many steps to take to continue to evolve how our industry works together and uses technology. The design industry has vastly changed through use of software like Revit. While creating efficiencies, it has also created gaps. Drawing notes such as "field verify,” "GC to verify,” and "See XYZ Drawing" still limit the coordination of documents from the design process. Contractors' use of BIM has also continued to evolve and expectations have changed. The challenge of "design intent" versus "means and methods,” which existed long before 3D modeling software, is more relevant in the world of BIM. Do contracts help or hurt us? How can we as an industry change this?

Join us in this presentation as we showcase how we used 4D visual planning, laser scanning, model-based coordination, virtual mockups, and other virtual design and construction (VDC) tools and processes to overcome existing conditions and optimize the renovation process, which included the use of 206 prefabricated bathroom pods, for the 20 Mass Ave project located in Washington, D.C. The former office building is undergoing renovation to become a mixed-use location with retail space and a luxury hotel. By working together as a whole, these tools enabled the project team to streamline communication, reduce errors, and stay on schedule and budget.
