Construction has a labor problem, a skills gap, an image issue, and diversity issues. The adoption of technology in construction presents new opportunities to reinvent our image, and our presence, into one that is much less caveman-esque: One that embraces diversity and technology and values its people. This tech adoption also presents us with new challenges as we navigate how to do this without alienating our current workforce who holds much of the knowledge about how we build. The industry cannot afford to push past the existing workforce, nor can it afford to give in and let the industry operate at status quo. Construction needs to adopt new paradigms that encourage the buy-in and support of the current workforce while attracting new talent from labor pools that are traditionally not attracted to the industry, including women and young workers who are just entering the workforce. There are issues in the industry that need to be explored and addressed in order to achieve these goals.

Engineers do not typically care how construction documents get created; they just want to capture their design intent. This course will go over some exciting new workflows and software that enable civil site and building/facility disciplines to easily reference one another, dynamically. We'll also discuss why engineers and project managers should be adopting the "model first” approach as standard practice for design projects.

The "Canal do Sertão Alagoano" is an important initiative of the Brazilian government that aims to combat drought by providing access to water for various purposes, such as rural and urban human consumption, livestock watering, and irrigation. The successful implementation of this project can serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges. In this session, you'll learn more about the implementation of the BIM Execution Plan (BEP) in a 27 km section of an open channel design. We'll highlight the collaboration between the design and construction teams and the clients through a common data environment (CDE). We'll discuss the complexity of 3D modeling for open channels in AutoCAD Civil 3D software, the use of Subassembly Composer to automate channel sections with multilayered earth fill, and the use of self-adjusting earth embankments to accommodate different soil materials. We'll also cover the use of Dynamo for minor automation and Navisworks software for design simulation.

According to HABITAT III, roughly a quarter of the world's urban population—equivalent to the combined populations of Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States—lives in slums. In São Paulo, IBGE found that 1.2+ million people live in slums. These areas are becoming increasingly dense, which poses a challenge for sewage and drainage systems. Paraisópolis is the densest slum in São Paulo, and its streams have been occupied by housing. Sondotécnica presents Autodesk technology—Civil 3D, ReCap, Revit, InfraWorks, InfoWorks ICM, and InfoDrainage software—as a solution. Through building information modeling (BIM), we interpret the existing situation and can perform the simulation and validation of the sanitary sewage and drainage project, restoring the stream clean and integrated into urban life. The goal is to transform the slums into sustainable environments.

In this Hands-On Labs, we'll explore the workflows between InfoWorks ICM and AutoCAD Civil 3D. While this is not a superficial, unnecessary, or overly bad sequel, this Hands-on lab will explore real-time collaboration we challenge two teams to execute a whodunnit flood simulation to save the little town of Topper. InfoWorks ICM enables team collaboration and empowers engineers to reach beyond single-purpose tools tools to evaluate various options against a multitude of rainfall events within the context of the entire watershed. This Lab will provide users the opportunity to save the town of Topper - together by leveraging Civil 3D data, and InfoWorks ICMs integrated catchment modeling to evaluate the town for possible flood damages.

El Corte Ingles is the largest department store chain in Europe and one of the biggest real estate owners in Spain. Within a larger digital transformation strategy, the Real Estate area has embraced BIM methodology and in 2022 has embarked on the digitization of 20+ of their malls. Every year, a substantial investment is made in order to bring their assets up to the highest building management standards. BIM models provide now a single, up-to-date and reliable source to study and plan yearly investment and designs. In this case study we will take an in-depth look at our approach which has enabled us to model the existing assets in some 20+ centers and our biggest logistic platform in less than a year, taking advantage of point clouds and 360° pictures. We will showcase the hits and misses of this journey, where we have gone from zero BIM knowledge to managing more than 2.5M m2, including the transformation of 60K+ unique furniture items to Revit families.

The construction industry made the move to building information modeling (BIM) more than a decade ago using tools like Revit software to improve design and construction. From an FM perspective, the industry is now moving toward smarter buildings, and digital twins are becoming increasingly important. Ironically, depending on who you ask, industry experts will agree on applications for digital twins, but they often cannot agree on a definition. In this session, a diverse panel of experts will discuss different aspects of digital twins and definitions. We'll present an overview of digital twins and the results of IT Community of IFMA's "Annual Digital Twin Survey.” The presentation will then move to a discussion where panelists will share their insights into current and future applications of digital twins using tools like Autodesk Tandem software. This session will help clarify what a digital twin is; what should be expected as a deliverable from the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry; and the level of adoption within FM.
