When it comes to Building Information Modeling, we seem to have the building and modeling parts down pretty well, but the information part continues to cause the architecture, engineering, and construction industry to evolve and change. The problem with the information part is not its existence, but rather its longevity and connection to the building. The information exists, but in too many forms: spreadsheets, databases, catalogs, and other miscellaneous documents. So, how do you tie these other data sources to the model? We will examine various methods for overcoming data loss by bringing the information part in early and keeping it in an accessible form that can feed the lifecycle of the building. Discussion will center around the creation, maintenance, and accessibility of room data. We will examine various options for making the data accessible through multiple platforms simultaneously.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a powerful workflow that's often sold as a massive time savings versus a comparable CAD workflow—but many firms jumping into it see an increase in their project time rather than a decrease. There are a lot of CAD practices that, while very efficient in AutoCAD software-based projects, are a terrible idea to maintain in a Revit software-based project. This class will look at some of those common pitfalls, and examine ways to maintain the intent of that workflow and yet harness the "smart" features of BIM. This class is targeted at smaller to mid-size architectural practices that may not necessarily need, or be ready to have, everything smart and optimized in the offices, but are hoping to see some of the time savings and improved accuracy that BIM promises—and doesn't always deliver.

Voorbij Prefab is a highly automated concrete factory in the Netherlands that produces wall elements for housing. At Voorbij Prefab, the clients’ Revit models are directly used to generate data for the robots. This class will show the complete workflow. It starts with managing the clients to get uniform models, then combining the Revit models, and using Dynamo to add all the concrete detailing. Using IDAT software, based on AutoCAD software, reinforcement is added and files are created to feed the robots. Finally, BIM 360 Field software is used in combination with QR codes to scan and view the precast elements on the building site. Not only will we explain this workflow, we’ll do it from start to finish during this one-hour class—and an element by choice will be produced live in the factory in Amsterdam! At the end of this class, we’ll take a look into the future regarding how the Structural Precast Extension in combination with IDAT tools can be used to produce even more efficiently with Revit software.

Years ago I began exploring the possibilities of creating the classical orders of architecture in Revit software. Parametric families are the cornerstones of Revit software, and this project presented an ideal way to push Family Editor to its limits. Challenges were many, but there were plenty of successes as well. This session is part case study (of the journey I took from the original idea all the way to the publication of a book) and part tutorial (to show the 'nuts and bolts' of how we built the software families), all demonstrated directly in Revit software. In this session I'll talk about scaling, content reuse, profiles, moldings, formulas, nested components, and complex forms in both the traditional and adaptive component Family Editors. I'll show the final successful versions and a few not-so-successful earlier versions as well. If you're interested in historic architecture and/or classical form, or you just like pushing Family Editor to extremes, then this session is sure to please.

Contemporary rail projects are vastly complex due to an intersection of several key factors. The deliverables and support that agencies and contractors ask for are scaling with new technology. These technologies are relatively new to the rail design space, and there are currently no precedents for implementing them. On two similar rail projects, tailored workflows and custom automation tools were developed in order to deliver the required standard documentation, visualization, clash detection, and asset management deliverables. The synergy between automation, connected BIM, and creative project workflow were essential to the execution of these projects. In this session, we’ll examine the project needs, collaboration between BIM 360 software and ProjectWise, and automation with the Subassembly Composer, Dynamo, Forge, and LISP.

It’s hard to believe that Revit software has been around for nearly 20 years, but we can’t seem to agree on how to work together with it. This simple fact is the basis for this panel session. Here in 2018, we’ve come a long way from the early days of Revit, but we still can’t seem to get out of our silos and really work together. Sure, we can collaborate on projects, but we still don’t really know what our fellow disciplines need in their Revit models—and, by extension, what we could put in our models to improve theirs. But what if we just asked the other disciplines what they needed? This will be a moderated panel discussion, with 7 different Revit disciplines represented: architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, construction, FM/Owner/Operator, and Software/Revit.
