Hear from a knife maker on how we capitalize on lathe functionality within Fusion 360 software—CAM (computer-aided manufacturing). In this class we will show how to use Fusion 360 Lathe to design parts, set up relevant tools, create toolpaths, simulate, and post the GCode. We will show several methods to design lathe parts, including extruding cylinders and stacking them, as well as drawing a profile sketch and revolving the object to create it. We will spend a lot of time in the CAM environment, showing real-world examples of how to set up many different kinds of tools in all orientations, how to create complex toolpaths to do exactly what you want, and how to use the simulation to your advantage. We will also go over several hidden tips and tricks that will really maximize what Fusion 360 software is capable of on a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe. On the postprocessor side of things, we will show what the GCode looks like and how it works in the real world. Find out how you can accelerate learning and inspire students to use Digital Prototyping easily and collaboratively.

For years I've used 3D printers when teaching workshops to young (and not so young) makers. As delighted as participants are to see their objects appear, we always run out of time. This same problem applies to my design and prototyping cycle. A computer numerical control (CNC) router can, in many cases, cut the same object in less time. Inventables' Carvey is luggable, enclosed, and features a safety interlock-perfect for groups of young people. And it's extremely well supported by Fusion 360 computer-aided machining (CAM). Add in machinable wax, and you've got the perfect material for learning: you can run at high feed rates, you don't have to contend with fine particulates, and you can recover and reuse nearly 100% of the material for the next workshop. I'll share my process, tips, and techniques for using this combination to go from model to material quickly, quietly, and cleanly.

This course will describe the advantages and challenges of using 3D printing for shoe manufacturing. It will include how OESH Shoes is using a special 3D printing process for production manufacturing. Key to the process is a pellet-based extruding 3D printer that is specifically designed for extruding elastomeric materials suitable for shoe components. The printer prints directly from readily available thermoplastic pellets rather than from filament, and enables us to use blowing agents in both chemical and physical form as well as microcellular expanding agents to produce cellular and foamed materials that are particularly suitable for shoe soles. We have a bank of these 3D printers all operating simultaneously, each printer producing its own made-to-order pair of shoes or components. This process enables us to offer a much broader range of styles and sizes than is achievable with traditional manufacturing, and it will enable us to produce customized shoes. This session features Fusion 360.

This class will cover a complete design process inside Fusion 360 software using different modeling tools and discovering tip and tricks for using the Freeform commands in a better way. As you know, there are many differences between classic NURBS modeling and T-spline. Especially for consumer goods parts, it is important to integrate the process with solid modeling features like shell, ribs, and bosses. During the lesson we will cover 10 golden rules for speeding up and increasing the quality of Freeform modeling and creating a good integration with solid modeling stuff. We will do all the process using Fusion 360 software. In the last part of the class we will show the workflow from the model to the first prototyping product and to the integrated computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) for mold making.

University Technical College (UTC) Leeds is a new type of school in the United Kingdom for 14 to 18 year olds. Using Fusion 360 software, UTC Leeds has created a global classroom where students can work alongside industry professionals virtually, via Fusion 360 software’s collaborative features. Students are set challenging briefs designed specially to encourage virtual collaboration within Fusion 360 software. Pedagogically, students practice an iterative design process using 3D printing for its true value, before feeding back into Fusion 360 software’s collaborative environment. This class demonstrates real case studies and presents the pedagogical approach for teaching high-quality digital skills to students. The class creates a foundation for how Fusion 360 software and 3D printing can unite to create a world-class curriculum. Students opting to study at a UTC aspire to work within the engineering sector. The United Kingdom has a shortfall of engineers, with an estimated 1.2 million needed by 2020. This session features Fusion 360.

Taking as an example a real-world case—a dam discharge tunnel—this class will show how to handle a model that originated from digital scan, taking it toward a model that is at the same time simple, but keeping the relevant features. We will explain the workflow of turning the complex surface model into point clouds and simplified surfaces, and then generate a Simulation-friendly model—all using a wide range of Autodesk, Inc., products (like AutoCAD Civil 3D software, ReCap software, Inventor software, Remake software, and Fusion 360 software). Having the final model, we will explain how to set it up in Autodesk CFD software using the latest features of Autodesk CFD 2017 software—especially Hydrostatic Pressure—showing how it works and generates accurate results predicting the flow in and around the tunnel. Results derived from simulations are used for the design of the tunnel entrance to maximize the efficiency of the discharge, and to avoid problematic effects like cavitation. A representative of the EP customer that commissioned the project will be joining as a co-presenter. This session features CFD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Fusion 360. AIA Approved

Product development is a pain, right? It doesn’t have to be. Let us walk you through it. We’re two industrial designers with a knack for teaching. Design thinking is a great process to move a team quickly from problem space to solutions. But it’s just that: a cognitive process. What do you do with all those great ideas? This class will be a hands-on introduction to design thinking and making. In small teams, we’ll work rapidly through a design challenge using a human-centered approach, and develop virtual prototypes using Fusion 360 software. We’ll give participants a project brief, and select teams at random. The focus of this highly engaging workshop is to rapidly develop a product solution (as a team) through design thinking and conceptual realization using Fusion 360. Teams will prepare and present their solutions in an informal share.

Fusion 360 3D CAD/CAM software has opened up a world of possibilities to engineers, machinists, and makers. It is no longer necessary to spend serious money to get into an integrated CAD/CAM package with equally serious capabilities. But this is a double-edged sword, and it's had the effect of inserting into the manufacturing sector people who have little to no experience in machining, quality control, or customer relations. This course seeks to provide a comprehensive list of tips, tricks, and advice in the areas of computer numerical control (CNC) machining, quality control, customer relations, and personal/business integrity. While a lot of the content is "software agnostic," Fusion 360 will be used to its full extent as often as is possible.

Understand the layers of connectivity and components that make up a complete connected solution, including selecting the right devices; picking a protocol, edgeware, and communication carrier; and connecting the data with business logic in Fusion Connect—as well as data analytics and machine learning. We aim to provide you with the information you need to build a solution outline that avoids the potential pitfalls and rookie mistakes that come with creating your connected products. This session features Fusion Connect and SeeControl (now Fusion Connect).

Imagine you could design parts of your building with increased performance! Imagine you could produce them on-site and they could inform you of their performance! In this industry talk, we’ll introduce you to a case study that ticks all of the points above. We have combined manufacturing tools and processes to the construction industry norms, using Fusion 360 software and Autodesk Generative Design software to design a series of components to be key on the facade of a new headquarters office in the Netherlands. Each of them is unique, taking into consideration structural capacity, the fabrication method, material, and cost. Sensors have been allocated on them, letting us get real-time data to feed the next generation of components (if ever in need of replacement), know the facade’s performance, predict its behavior, and act on time. Get a glimpse of the complete workflow, from capturing the installation positions to fine-tuning of the individual elements and the final result.

You don't often take an additive part directly from print bed to installation. Tolerance requirements almost always dictate the need for subtractive postmachining to ensure surfaces meet design specs and tolerances. In this class, we'll take a generativity-designed part from design to preparation for hybrid manufacturing. Along the way, we'll explore optimization with generative design, design for manufacturing, and work-holding design, and we'll see how the mechanical design tools, FEA capabilities, and hybrid manufacturing environment in Fusion 360 software can reduce friction and streamline the process from design to manufactured part.

Most people do not think of sketching and CAD as direct partners. They are typically viewed specifically as Step 1 and Step 2. Last year at Autodesk University, I hosted a very popular class on this very subject. Please join me for this session and explore the strength of sketching and CAD working together. Sketching is a tool that everyone should use (and I believe everyone can sketch). It is a wonderful tool that can bridge language and distance hurdles. In addition, as a project moves to CAD, sketching helps fill in the blanks for development. As CAD becomes more dominant in the process, the tool is capitalized on for detail, verification, and production. This is the heart of what CAD does best. In addition, we will talk about CAD at the start of a project and sketching toward the end of a project! Come sketch with me, learn about CAD, and see the symbiotic relationship between SketchBook mobile app and Fusion 360 software. This session features Fusion 360 and Sketchbook Express.

At Autodesk University 2018, the speaker successfully delivered 101 tips in 90 minutes. This year, we’re changing it up by starting with a blank canvas and building up a design from scratch, ending with documentation and manufacturing tips and tricks. Sketching, modeling, assemblies, third-party CAD models, generative-designed parts, sheet metal, and CAM will be part of the workflow. Everyone loves a quick-fire class full of productivity and power-user tips and tricks, and this class will deliver on that with context. Fusion 360 software is a big product, with lots of environments to master. No matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, there are always new tips to learn from different perspectives. Come along to see practical application of the tips, tricks, and best practices you’ll undoubtedly learn in this class.

This Industry Talk will discuss how generative design played a part in designing a seat for Martyn Ashton, a world champion mountain bike trials rider. Martyn suffered an accident in 2003 which meant he needed to adapt his mountain bike to ride again. Teaming up with the team at Fabric.cc, a world-leading cycling accessory company, they were able to create a seat that Martyn was comfortable in and fixed to his bike in the position he needed. Fabric.cc utilised generative design in this process to make sure the brackets were strong enough and light enough to suit the bike seat.

How can new technologies like 3D printing and generative design help flexible and adaptable manufacturers, such as a CNC job shop, reduce time and cost whilst maintaining or improving their quality and throughput? In a world with an ever-increasing demand for adaptability and customization, whilst simultaneously a requirement for ever-increasing productivity, this is an important question to answer. This class will look at how automation of non-value-added steps in the engineering process such as the design of fixtures and work holding, can be used to reduce human error, save time, and increase productivity and quality. By combining generative design with CNC toolpath simulation capabilities of 5-axis machining software, multiple CAD-ready fixtures, based on manufacturing constraints and product performance requirements, can be quickly generated. This allows for bespoke fixtures which have been designed by the computer to be 3D printed overnight, ready to machine the next day. Generative design also allows multiple materials and manufacturing methods to be directly evaluated allowing the engineer to make informed choices about which manufacturing method is best suited for each case, depending on the machines and expertise they have available.

This class will focus on introducing the tool combination between Fusion 360 software and generative design / Dynamo Studio software. Fusion 360 can expand design and engineering capabilities with external Autodesk solutions. In the near future, 3D printing in metal and agronomic design will lead product innovation and it will drive big impacts in the market. Co-speaker Satoshi Yanagisawa has created a 3D-printed titanium bicycle with Fusion 360 and Within software. Satoshi will introduce the entire development process during the class. He also created Task Light with Fusion 360 and Dynamo Studio. This beautiful Task Light can be controlled from smartphones and hand gestures. Come and see how it was developed.

This class will cover 3D modelling for design intent, design ideation, generative design, simulation, rendering, and CAM workflows. Bruno Pfister contacted CADPRO Systems in 2015 to find out about a product called Fusion 360, wondering if it could help him to develop CAM programs for his brand-new Haas computer numerical control (CNC) machine. His goal was to design and manufacture BMX components for New Zealand's competitive grassroots and professional BMXers. This class tells his story about the development of cranks and chain rings used at various international events including the 2016 BMX World Championships in Columbia.
