Design thinking is a great process to move a team quickly from problem space to solutions. But it's just that: a cognitive process. What do you do with all those great ideas? This class will be a hands-on introduction to design thinking and making. In small teams, we'll work rapidly through a design challenge using a human-centered approach, and develop virtual prototypes using Fusion 360 software. We’ll give participants a project brief, and select teams at random. The focus of this highly engaging workshop is to rapidly develop a product solution (as a team) through design thinking and conceptual realization using Fusion 360. Teams will prepare and present their solutions in an informal share.

Sometimes design changes can produce counterintuitive changes to the performance of a design. In this interactive session, we’ll explore different design changes, all the while using simulation to determine the right direction to take a design. In the end, we’ll explore how generative design can provide a shortcut in this sometimes-arduous task.

Generative Design opens up new solution spaces because there is more than one way to solve problems. Fusion software’s powerful CAM tools have been extended by additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities to enable workflows directly from design to additive, subtractive, or hybrid production of parts. This class will show an example workflow to apply subtractive preparations, add support structures, and calculate the toolpath for an Aconity Metal AM machine with a generatively designed model—all inside Fusion software. Metal AM processes produce parts of limited surface quality that need subtractive postprocessing. Putting data in the center allows for exploring design options, adding offsets/stock for milling, and calculating laser paths in the same software.

This class will focus on how Plastique Métal Technologie (PMT), part of Veolia Water Technologies, has used Fusion 360 features in order to optimize the shape of some parts of their ecological wastewater treatment plants. Veolia will explain how its engineering teams have worked on a few use cases, like optimizing separation plates or exploring new shapes for the bucket wheels through generative design capabilities. With Fusion 360 software, Veolia can redesign key manufacturing parts of the firm’s equipment and reduce material used. It participates in a context of sustainable development to reduce waste and costs (such as transportation and manufacturing costs), and to improve the security during maintenance operation for Veolia customers and employees.

Engineers and designers face an internal struggle when choosing between traditional design methods engrained through years of practice and new Generative Design workflows. Simply applying traditional design methods to Generative Design tools often leads to insufficient results which can be used for inspiration, but are not ready for manufacture. This hands-on lab will bridge the gap between traditional and Generative Design workflows, empowering users to complete the design process by leveraging Generative Design in powerful ways. Attendees will leverage Autodesk Generative Design alongside Meshmixer, Netfabb, Fusion 360, and Nastran to create a finished product, while exploring workflows which greatly improve productivity.

With the announcement of Autodesk Generative Design, we take one of the most common structural engineering problems and turn it on its head. This class will teach you how to use AGD to discover unthought-of designs for a structural aerospace bracket. Learn how to go from seed geometry definition in Fusion 360, to problem definition, design generation, and results exploration in Autodesk Generative Design. Select from generated designs of different materials, safety factors and build constraints. Next, we use detailed non-linear finite element analysis in Fusion 360 to verify the selected Generative Design solution. Learn how to input non-linear properties for AM metals and correctly interpret finite element results. Once verified we will discuss AM (metal powder bed) build preparation with the help of Autodesk NetFabb. Finally, we will compare the performance of our new Generatively Designed bracket with that of the baseline (subtractive manufactured) bracket by physically breaking both of them!

During this class, we are going to discover how to use it for expanding and increasing the innovation on machinery industries effecting products’ performance and production costs. We will use real customer examples.

This will be a guide to understanding how CAD data benefits print, digital, and immersive deployments involving augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). We will look at a strategic and tactical approach to implementing CAD data into CG visualization and immersive developments for training and technical communication within manufacturing. This talk will focus on the benefits and pitfalls of translating CAD data into functional CG assets for print (ILT), digital (WBT), and immersive (AR/ VR) deployments. Topics will include: better utilizing your product lifecycle management (PLM) and specific export formats into 3ds Max software; and creating Levels of Development (LODs) to target high-resolution output (print and animation) and low-resolution for real-time environments (AR/VR).
