In the heart of innovation, nestled within the esteemed halls of the Technical University of Munich, stands TUM Boring—Innovation in Tunneling e.V.—a beacon of progress. Comprising 50 students, this initiative embodies a collective dream of crafting the future. Their ambition? Challenging the conventional paradigms of today's mobility infrastructure through a reduction in tunnelling cost. Embracing this challenge, the student team from Munich built the world's fastest tunnel-boring machine, earning them first place twice in Elon Musk's prestigious Not-a-Boring Competition. Hosted by The Boring Company, this event challenged teams globally to demonstrate their prowess in drilling a tunnel both swiftly and precisely—30 meters in length and 50 centimeters in width. Learn how to create tunnel sections and corridor modeling solids for tunnels in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Learn how Civil 3D interacts with Revit Structure software and how to manipulate tunnel solids, obtain drawings, and create reports, volumetrics, and visualization in Revit Structure. Finally, learn how to model a tunnel natively in Revit Structure and export it to Civil 3D.

On rail infrastructure projects, consultants provide tunnel ring models for entire alignment, created using a two-point adaptive family based on the track center point via Dynamo. But these models lack detailed tunnel features—segmentation and dimple holes. Coordination with stakeholders requires complete tunnel models with segmentation and dimple holes. We must develop this detailed model to accurately place services brackets along the tunnel. The ring comprises eight segments, including a key segment with a varying location. A family of these segments, with a rotation parameter set by the tunnel's center point, is essential. Our process involves deriving the tunnel's center from track center points using geometric translations. Dynamo makes placement points for adaptive components. The angle of rotation is recorded on the site for the key segment in XYZ, and we develop construction model using that data. This construction model aids subcontractor in accurate service modeling.

The Studio Wind Tunnel Project will bring simulation insight and guidance to the automotive design community. With seamless integration into existing design pipelines, fully automated virtual wind-tunnel analysis will enable studios to assess performance criteria, visualize airflow, and make informed design decisions at any stage of development. Designed to provide reliable and consistent insight, the Studio Wind Tunnel Project solves traditional challenges associated with vehicle aerodynamic simulation.

Technology is growing rapidly and Revit software is no exception. It started with limitations of a few kilometers, and with time went over to tenths of kilometers as a model-size limitation in Revit. Despite of this, rumor still has it that Revit can't be used for large spanning projects. Engineers wouldn't be engineers if they took "no" for an answer, and we didn't. Instead, we chose the most extreme project-the world's deepest and longest subsea road tunnel "Rogfast"-and made it happen. Take Revit and marry it with Dynamo software and you have the ultimate solution for any challenge. Join the session and see it for yourself. We will share workflows developed and lessons learned.

This presentation will go over the initial planning and execution stages of a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-driven project to create a new 2-lane tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Virginia. When complete, the new tunnel will carry 2 lanes of traffic southbound and the existing tunnel will carry 2 lanes of traffic northbound. The project design is quite a challenge, as it's meant to connect to an existing highway and tunnel system in such a way as not to disturb the flow of traffic during construction. Using AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Revit software, Navisworks software, and additional Autodesk software, we were able maximize our use of the model data, not just for construction documents, but also for analysis. Coordination of not just the design data, but also the various teams and interests on the project, were integral to making it successful.

Advanced building information modeling (BIM) processes require us to consider modeling with different lenses: personas interacting on a shared model extracting different BIM uses throughout the different project lifecycle stages. We'll look at the specific case of "tunnel ring segment” modeling and all the phases that have been conducted to a Revit model that is open, universal, and fully parametric so it can be used from bidding to execution and from planners to fabricators. The class will show how Bouygues Travaux Publics went from collecting users' needs to formalizing a specification and developing a Revit family and all its applications in Revit, InfraWorks, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud. We'll focus on the benefits realized with the application in a project now in the construction phase.

In this class, we will use the Grand Paris Express project linking the suburbs of Paris by metro to showcase the workflows that enable project success. We will demonstrate solutions for the unique requirements of Building Information Modeling (BIM)-ready tunnel projects from predesign to construction, including accurate existing conditions, reality capture, dynamic object systems, extended attribution, subsurface geology awareness, excavation phasing, interoperation with coordinate systems and sloped geometry, level of development (LOD) progression, structural steel and rock bolt layouts, and quantities surveys. Enterprise Priority Support has worked directly with some of the collaborating engineering firms on the Grand Paris to mentor the use of ReCap 360 software, InfraWorks 360 software, Revit software, and AutoCAD Civil 3D software in order to attain efficient and streamlined workflows across multiple software platforms and engineering disciplines, guaranteeing project success and models ready for BIM. TUM Boring—Innovation in Tunneling e.V.—is an initiative of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) comprised of 70 highly motivated students who have teamed up to innovate toward a greener future in which we waste less time commuting by pushing the status quo of today’s mobility infrastructure. To achieve this, we built the world's fastest tunnel-boring machine and competed in Elon Musk's Not-a-Boring Competition. This competition, hosted by The Boring Company, challenges teams from around the world to drill a tunnel 30 meters long and 50 centimeters wide as quickly and accurately as possible. In this talk, we will take you on our unique journey from project inception in July 2020 to competition finals in late summer 2021. This class will show how Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used to help coordinate construction of a complex intersection of a utility tunnel in China. Animations were made to show the removal of the existing pipelines, the traffic control, and the construction sequence of the utility tunnel. Project scheduling management, hazard identification, and quality control using BIM were also carried out. Through this class, attendees will get a taste of BIM implementation in China.

That's why 60 highly motivated students from Munich's major universities have teamed up to demonstrate that this is actually possible—by winning Elon Musk's Not-a-Boring Competition. Learn how we work in interdisciplinary subteams on a 22-ton machine with more than 10,000 components using Autodesk Fusion software—from end to end. Find out how we go through the entire product development cycle from design to manufacturing, and how we optimize all the different subsystems to achieve our goal.

It is complex to model structures such as viaducts and tunnels that are controlled by an alignment and profile. Put that in an environment where the alignment changes often, and the structural engineer, using a tool like Revit software, finds it hard to accommodate that change. AutoCAD Civil 3D software is great for designing the alignment and profile—with complex curve elements and subassemblies for the mass modeling of complex structures—but we need Revit software for the detailed concrete modeling. Solutions to the challenge involving export/import of data between software have helped, but they present their own new challenges. This is where writing Dynamo scripts comes into play, providing integration and coordination between AutoCAD Civil 3D software and Revit software to give an interactive and dynamic modeling environment that can integrate structures like stairs and the MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing)-required equipment. This class uses custom AutoCAD Civil 3D software subassemblies, Dynamo scripts, and Revit families. This session features AutoCAD Civil 3D, Dynamo Studio, and Revit.

We made a digital twin (DT) of the tunnels that we manage on behalf of the province of North Holland. We're responsible for operating, controlling, and monitoring those tunnels. The data of the tunnels in the DT make the management and maintenance process much easier. Through its application, the DT is a central database in which we as tunnel administrator—along with the subcontractors and our client—can work directly. Accordingly, we all have up-to-date information about the status of the asset. As an administrator, we know the status of reliability, availability, and safety at all times. The contractor can immediately assess the severity and nature of defects and immediately has insight into the required material for carrying out the maintenance. Based on current information, the owner can make strategic decisions. An extensive effort was necessary regarding the original working method. With the DT, the process steps were reduced by almost 50%.

In the design process of highway projects, applying building information modeling (BIM) technology, using parametric design methods, and delivering complete project models is a challenging task. During the design process, issues such as efficient design workflow, data exchange, model segmentation, WBS info, and digital delivery need to be addressed. With parametric design tools like Dynamo software, engineers can automatically create models and complete property assignments based on project requirements, significantly reducing repetitive work and allowing them to focus more on the design itself. This case study will show you the complete parametric design workflow and data exchange for this highway expansion project, with a focus on parametric modeling using Dynamo and Python. Through parametric modeling via programming, stakeholders can achieve efficiency gains of two to three times compared to manual modeling methods for roadbeds, pavements, bridges, and tunnels.
