Structural Simulation for Architects: An Introduction to Structural Thinking for Design Students
Teaching structural design to architecture students is a bit like teaching a bowling ball to float. Both design students and bowling balls require a change in their core states to be successful in their relative tasks. Visual thinkers, like most architects, struggle with the analysis and calculation process of structural design. As a result, they rarely gain comfort with the iterative requirements of designing compelling structures that are additive to design expressions. By introducing architecture students to structural simulation in Autodesk® Revit® software, the learning process is modified to work with visual thinkers—developing a stronger connection to the design process and improved direct feedback (visual in nature) to the ramifications and potentials of design decisions. This class will outline the opportunities and pedagogy of structural simulation as a predesign effort and design development strategy in the architectural education studio course.

Sustainable Structural Design: Answering the Global Environmental Challenge
Although the structure of any design is its backbone, it is also one of the top areas in construction that adversely impacts the environment. But with the technology available today, we can reduce this environmental impact. Whether it’s eliminating wastage or minimizing embodied carbon, we have the means to reduce both short- and long-term environmental impacts and make structural design and engineering sustainable for our planet. This class will focus on the technologies available to structural designers and engineers today to work on connected and collaborative workflows and reduce waste, optimize material use, and make decisions to minimize embodied carbon. This class will also look at one of the top examples of using alternate structural materials in a commercial building, heavily reducing the environmental footprint of production and manufacturing.

Structural Design to Fabrication with AEC Collection—Part II
This class is the next level up from the “Structural Design to Fabrication: Revit and Advance Steel—Buddies for Life” class at Autodesk University 2020. Once you have designed, simulated, and generated the fabrication drawings, the next step is making them available to the field teams. On top of that, tracking the changes and ensuring the site teams have access to the latest documentation is one of the main challenges. This class will focus on the various office-to-field workflows you can use to share the latest and greatest structural BIM (Building Information Modeling) data and fabrication drawings with the extended teams in the field. You will learn about the Autodesk Docs workflows that come in the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection that you can use to share and compare different versions of structural BIM data and fabrication drawings for effective decision-making processes in the field. This class will also cover the process of creating and managing issues related to structural field workflows.

BIM-Driven Engineering: Structural Design Without Redundant Workload

The Structural Design Workflow Based on Revit as a Core Platform with Dynamo
This class will present the new structural design workflow based on Revit software as a core platform. It improves your work dramatically. This workflow makes it easy to manage all the data together, such as data sharing with other industries, drawing, structural analysis, and so on. You can connect the acquire information from Revit to others (for example, other industries and software) through Dynamo software. We'll focus on the design workflow across the departments-Revit Structure software and Revit MEP software. We'll look at some utilizations of Dynamo to connect Revit with other Autodesk products, like Robot Structural Analysis Professional software. We'll show how to interconvert Revit data to and from existing structural analytical tools such as Microsoft Excel and in-house development programs. And we'll cover how to draw a structural drawing and how to manage it with Revit and Dynamo. This session will explore the above techniques as they have been used for actual building projects.

Value Enhancement in Optioneering Through Computational Structural Design
Computing power is increasing exponentially, however, structural engineers are only starting to realize its power for design automation. This talk will focus on how this can be used to provide optioneering in early project stages, and investigate a computational scheme design tool. The talk will deconstruct the tool and its logic to demonstrate the integration between the various Autodesk packages and how this is formed into a cohesive product to provide valuable information for design teams. The tool provides metrics such as material cost, embodied C02, and program implications, while utilizing the Atkins Human-Centered Design toolkit to ensure a holistic appreciation of project requirements. The talk will feature exemplar uses of the tool on pilot projects and will quantify the increased value achievable over conventional design approaches. We will then discuss future improvements to the tool and how computational design could be used in other ways to improve structural design.

Computational Logic in Structural Design
The visual programming interface of Dynamo is enabling structural engineers with the tools to build optimized structures with minimal energy, and subsequently make their own design tools. Based on the Revit Platform, we can use our creativity to develop optimized structural systems using computational logic in an advanced building information modeling environment. This lab will teach participants how to create and iterate computational space frames with native Revit Framing elements and Adaptive Components, and how these can be used in structural analysis.

Precast Building Design Using Revit, Robot Structural Analysis, and Dynamo

Precast structures are a prime example of why Building Information Modeling (BIM) is so crucial to engineering professionals. In a typical precast project, there are hundreds of pieces and parts that need to be tracked, ordered on time, and assembled correctly. Revit software offers the perfect medium to do that; however, Revit software by itself cannot yet perform a complete structural analysis and design, but offers some tools to help in doing so. In this class, we will explore the process of creating an analytical model of a typical precast residential building, exporting and running the structural analysis in Robot Structural Analysis software, and then transferring the reinforcing back to Revit software. Revit software and Robot Structural Analysis software are not specifically tailored to tackle all things precast, but the .NET framework and the Dynamo extension make it easier to streamline workflows. We will also look at how to use Dynamo to automate precast drafting and design. This session features Robot Structural Analysis and Revit. AIA Approved

Optimize Your Structural Design Using Revit and RISA
This class will take a full building model from Revit software into RISAFloor, RISA-3D, RISAFoundation, and RISAConnection for an optimized structural design. We will focus on the newest addition to the RISA-Revit link with RISAConnection. The RISAConnection link can transfer your steel connections between Revit and RISA, and RISAConnection will do all the design checks and send the design details back to Revit. Now you can bring the entire structure into RISA, including the connections from Revit, and round-trip a full design back to Revit. This class will demonstrate the workflow from the perspective of the structural engineer between Revit and RISA.

Transforming the Calculation Process: Revit as a Structural Design Platform
The Revit ecosystem provides powerful capabilities for structural engineering design which go far beyond the basics of drawing production and coordination. This case study will examine the journey of one structural engineering firm to push the limits of how a structural team uses Revit during daily design work. Gabbart and Woods Studio is a structural engineering firm based in Reno, Nevada, specializing in a variety of building types across all major structural materials. The purpose of this project was to pilot and evaluate a new Revit-centered approach for creating and managing structural engineering calculations and construction document production. This session will take you through the entire implementation process, including background and motivation for pursuing new approaches, the practical workflows and software tools that the team used, real-world design projects where new approaches were tested, and key lessons learned from the project.

This class will review the new composite-beam-design extension available for Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2016 software. To set the stage for the Robot Structural Analysis software demonstration, we will first complete a review of composite-beam-design theory and AISC 360-10’s composite-beam-design implementation and requirements. We’ll then demonstrate how you can access and install the composite-beam-design extension for Robot Structural Analysis 2016 software. We’ll conduct an in-depth examination of the composite-beam-design extension, detailing all of the features and uses by exploring composite-beam-design examples from actual projects. We’ll look at various types of composite-beam configurations, taking each example from analysis and design parameter definition through to reviewing the analysis and design results and reports.
