This class will through a showcase demonstrate how one of Sweden's biggest building owners tackles one of the toughest challenges in the construction industry? The project information flow. The owner was tired of all the collaboration errors caused by lack of information, wrong information being sent, uncoordinated models, construction delays due to wrong files, and other issues related to information flow. This is often due to the construction industryﾫs workflow process which results in silos in the building process. In this showcase, the building owner will present one of their latest projects: a 22,000-square-metre office building. You will learn how the owner could eliminate the information silos and enhance the building quality through integrating the project process in BIM 360. Further you will learn why the owner required all the design consultants to use Collaboration for Revit.

Digital twins for building owners are emerging tools for facilities management, operations, and maintenance. The large benefits of digital twins to overall businesses beyond traditional practice are just being realized. As an iteration of digital twins from the digital manufacturing, product, and machine space, the current industry definition is this: Digital twins are software representations of assets, and processes that are used to understand, predict, and optimize performance in order to achieve improved business outcomes. Digital twins consist of three components: a data model, a set of analytics or algorithms, and knowledge. This roundtable will be jointly hosted by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (WDPR), Brandon Wlosinski and Autodesk Consulting, and Dorian Chau to explore, define, and understand what digital twins mean for the building industry today. Bob Bray, senior director at ConstrucTwin at Autodesk, will provide his insights to the roundtable, as will other invited enterprise building owners.

Many institutional owners have near-continuous capital planning (new construction and renovation) programs. Their decision-making processes depend on reliable, accurate information. Come to this class and learn how delivering building information can turn a project-to-project relationship into an ongoing, long-term relationship. Architects, engineers, and contractors live in a model-centric world. Building owners live in an information-centric world. Most owners are not yet ready to manage 'live' building information models, but many are ready to manage the rich data set of information that is inherently available in, and can be easily obtained from, Revit software models. It's the information—and not just the geometry—in Building Information Modeling (BIM) that is making the difference for owners throughout the building lifecycle. This session focuses on the hidden value that may be found in your own models, and we will discuss how you can organize building information in—and extracted efficiently from—Revit software models with the Revit software COBie Toolkit.

When this digital twin journey was first shared by Brandon Wlosinski (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts—WDPR) and Dorian Chau (Autodesk) at Autodesk University 2020 as a roundtable discussion on digital twins for building owners, it focused on objectives, value, and vision. This year, the speakers are expanding the session into in a panel discussion to include Ken Kurihara from WDPR; Bill Kwon, VP of Digital at CRTKL, and Bob Bray, Autodesk Tandem GM, as well as invited enterprise business leaders. The panelists will share their experiences with industry challenges involving the optimization of project data for digital handover and other digital twin use cases. Digital twin practices have gained momentum in the building industry in the past year, and we will discuss the impact on and value to the businesses and changes in management approaches. Our panelists will share their perspectives on why digital twins are important from both the owners’ and consultants’ perspectives with digital handover, smart operations, and greater building insights.

A Revit model doesn't need to die when design and construction end. By connecting it to an integrated workplace management system (IWMS), it can live on as an as-maintained model to reflect changes that need to be authored by the owner. These models can then be infused with data, and linking them to an IWMS enables an owner to better understand how a building is performing and being maintained over the lifecycle. We'll discuss how repurposing record Revit software models as as-maintained models during operations can have huge impacts how those models continue to exchange data. We'll also discuss how a bidirectional connection to Revit software is the most effective way to be sure that a model continues to live, grow, and provide value to a building owner through the lifecycle of a building.

As a building owner or operator, it is necessary to have reliable, organized information to effectively respond to a portfolio's growing space, maintenance, and energy requirements. Unfortunately, most facilities were built prior to the development of Building Information Modeling (BIM), and for the few that do have models, there are often barriers that prevent the retrieval and sharing of this information. This class will discuss the facility datafication process developed by CASE to help owners generate the data they need to optimally manage their buildings. By aligning information technology with operational processes and advanced Revit software techniques, owners and operators are enabled to effectively communicate and collaborate through a model-based Building Information Solution. This course will also discuss the integration of third-party software and customizations to enhance the datafication process, increase informed decision-making, and optimize the performance of a building portfolio.

This session will present how an enlightened building owner (The Ohio State University) has successfully partnered/collaborated with both a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-savvy architect and contractor to develop a BIM project delivery standard that enables the model to serve as a single source of truth for relevant spatial and asset information throughout the building lifecycle. This delivery standard has truly begun with the end in mind by taking advantage of the knowledge gained from the BIM for the existing buildings portion of the Buckeye BIM Initiative. We'll highlight how the .RVT portion of this deliverable will work in collaboration with Revit software's COBie Toolkit-structured data to facilitate its utilization in asset management, space tracking, geographical information system (GIS), and sustainability. Lastly, we will highlight the need to implement Technology Solutions and workflows to enable the use of the model across the university and to support interoperability with other data systems.

In this timely panel discussion, hear how building owners, large and medium design firms, and the industry as a whole is using and benefitting from automated model checking. Learn, specifically, how they are reviewing their Revit models in BIM 360 software, generating reports on fidelity issues, and utilizing that data in dashboards. This panel will include a building owner (Denver International Airport) that manages all its design and construction projects in BIM 360; a large design firm (Jacobs) that works with DEN and other owners; a small design firm and how it works on BIM 360 projects; and the product development team responsible for Model Checker for Revit and Model Checker for Forge (CADD Microsystems). Facilitated by an architect on the Autodesk team, you will see and hear about all the great benefits these different project stakeholders have gained by implementing automated model checking on their projects.

FM:Systems® Building Information Modeling (BIM) integration software enables architecture, engineering, construction (AEC), and facilities professionals to connect Revit®-based software models to a cloud-based system to help them manage space, plan maintenance, and more. This class explores the opportunity for AEC professionals and building owners and operators to partner on a BIM lifecycle approach to managing facilities. We demonstrate how to create and maintain a live bidirectional integration between Revit software and the FM:BIM cloud-based system. We explore how AEC professionals can work more closely with building owners to develop BIM guidelines, workflows, and methods of integrating Revit models into a full BIM lifecycle. Finally, we discuss setting up a model in Revit, including defining rooms, spaces, and assets and publishing facility plans from Revit into FM:BIM.

In this followup roundtable, AU attendees can discuss Building Information Modeling (BIM) with both Joe Porostosky and Brian Skripac following the class Overcoming the Challenges of Building and Maintaining 11,000,000 Square Feet of BIM. BIM has introduced an evolutionary transformation at The Ohio State University. Our goal to model the entire 35 million square feet of campus space by May 2016 requires a well-thought-out implementation strategy and inclusive team approach. This followup discussion provides an extended opportunity to discuss the project. We engage attendees in a conversation about how they, as owners, are using BIM throughout the building lifecycle and discuss existing challenges and potential solutions.

As the title suggests, what owners want (need) from BIM (Building Information Modeling) is worlds away from what architects, engineers, and contractors need to build an owner’s building. This session will discuss BIM-related challenges from the architecture, engineering, and construction professional’s and owner’s perspectives. Once an understanding of each party’s unique needs is established, a road map can be developed that will enable collaboration through design, construction, commissioning, and facilities management. A hopeful outcome of this session is to shed some light on the challenging task of understanding differences that will allow for a clear road map moving forward. The gap between the AEC side and the owner side needs to be closed to truly take BIM out of this world.

For a facility manager and building owner, the information embedded in a Revit software / Building Information Modeling (BIM) model represents the most tangible connection to the collective knowledge gained by the Design Team, the constructor, and past operators of a facility. However, the technology, change, and confusion surrounding BIM in the facility management (FM) industry is making it very difficult for a facility manager to navigate. The panel—led by facilities and FM technology experts from IFMA's Information Technology Council—will lead the audience through the BIM value proposition for owners and provide tools for assessing if BIM is the correct tool for their specific operations. This will include a discussion about why BIM, at this point in time, may not be the correct solution. Separately, for those who are ready for BIM, we will discuss how to adequately specify the needs of an organization related to BIM. For some, this may include developing a roadmap toward BIM aspirations.

In this class, we will present perspectives and practical examples from our work on implementing an innovative approach to the construction, commissioning, handover, and lifecycle management processes for a facility. Consigli, the contractor on the project, is closely working with BRG, the building owner’s workplace management consultant. The project team mapped the owner's information needs from operations backwards into the construction and commissioning process, then implemented a set of technologies to deliver on this information flow. Key technologies in use include cloud- and iPad®-based field management software from Vela Systems®, Autodesk® Navisworks®, Autodesk® Revit®, and ARCHIBUS IWMS software. This class will explore each speaker's perspective on how this comprehensive approach to gathering and managing key systems and facilities data has changed both the process of delivering the project as well as the ultimate deliverable to the owner.
