In 2012 Texas Instruments Inc. launched the SensorTag, a $25 sensor array that communicates via Bluetooth Smart (also known as Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth LE) with smartphones or PCs. The SensorTag contains temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors, along with an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a magnetometer. And there are a couple of physical buttons, for good measure. SensorTags are often used as the basis for weather stations and health monitors, but what possibilities exist for the integration of this technology with design tools? This session will look at the data you can get from a SensorTag and how it might be integrated with Autodesk, Inc., software. We will cover the steps used to connect a SensorTag with smartphone and Windows apps, and we will examine use cases, such as using accelerometer and gyroscope data to manipulate the current 3D view in AutoCAD software.

Kinect Fusion allows you to paint in 3D using a Kinect device as a wand, aggregating a point cloud representing a 3D volume (and allowing you to export a mesh of the capture surface). Kinect Fusion started as a UK-based research project between Microsoft Research Cambridge and Imperial College London. It was introduced into the Kinect for Windows® SDK in the 1.7 release, and has the potential to enable low-cost, high-quality reality capture for anyone with a Kinect device. The reality capture group at Autodesk is working on ways to acquire, manipulate, or analyze real scene data using laser scans or photos through ReCap™ products. While several AU classes demonstrate ReCap use and workflows associated with these products, this class focuses on how to programmatically access the reality capture web API to create or extend an application. We start with a quick overview of basic photogrammetry concepts and image parameters. Then we approach the reality capture REST API and discuss how to define a photo scene from multiple photos and create a dense 3D mesh. We cover some of the advanced features that are available to customize and refine the process. Finally we conclude the class with a complete example written in PHP.
