Autodesk Research has a number of C++ toolkits—e.g., for spatial analysis and multi-agent simulation—that would previously only have been used in desktop or server-side applications. With Emscripten and WebAssembly, we can now take these codebases and use them directly in browser-based applications, whether using Autodesk Viewer, Tandem, or Forma. In this session, we will take a close look at bringing C++ codebases to the web, using a Forma extension as an example. Buildings contribute to more than 40% of global carbon emissions, and one key scalable solution is to reuse and upgrade existing buildings and materials instead of constructing new ones. This session showcases how Autodesk Research is exploring artificial intelligence (AI) for net-zero buildings in the context of existing building projects. The team is exploring two AI-driven prototypes: one is about assessing a building’s existing conditions with limited and multimodal data. This enables AECO professionals to "see inside walls"—similarly to an “x-ray view”—and cataloging hidden materials including their potential for reusability without destructive testing. The second AI-driven prototype involves creating new low-carbon assemblies using repurposed materials. With this workflow users can specify high-level goals like “reuse materials”, “reduce carbon” and “minimize cost” and interactively explore many different options. The presentation highlights potential integration opportunities with relevant Autodesk platform features, demonstrating how designers, contractors, and building owners can make informed decisions that significantly minimize carbon footprint while creating new economic value from existing assets.

This session will be an introduction to a sustainable workflow initiative that uses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce lead times from the design phase to construction by up to 60%. Building upon the success of A-SPEC (the existing automated restroom design cloud service) initially introduced during AU 2021, we proudly introduce "A-SPEC Plus,” our newest generation of design process that uses the latest AI algorithms. The inclusion of advanced AI in this upgrade allows for the creation of restroom layouts/plans that prioritize user comfort and spacious designs. In addition to the plan proposals created based on the new design logic, A-SPEC Plus significantly reduces lead time from design to construction with very little input by using the capabilities of Construction Cloud and Autodesk Platform Services. Potential applications of this technology extend far beyond restroom design. It also offers a scalable automated design solution for various building spaces and interior designs.

There is increased focus on how Digital will disrupt the E&C sector. Most executives now understand that soon, engineers will not design, they will develop the algorithms that automate the design of solutions. According to the 2023 Deltek Clarity survey, ¾ of E&C participants worry that they will lose market share within 2 years if they fail to transform. Also, CAPEX is increasing in most sectors, therefore successful transformation is not only seen as a necessary mean to remain profitable, but also to increase capacity and gain market share. However, it is common for E&C firms to struggle in transforming leveraging Technologies. Usual "ways of working" such as focus on utilization rate, risk aversion and silos can impede a successful transformation. There would be merit in conducting a panel discussion with leaders from different horizons to discuss the above, focusing on the why, potential solutions and how they made meaningful progress happen while addressing these challenges.
