Roundabouts are popping up all over the place. They're becoming commonplace in our transportation projects. Yet many engineers and technicians are finding them quite complex to design. With so many moving parts and factors to consider, it can be rather tricky to create a roundabout that is safe, easy on traffic, and properly draining. This is where the new roundabout tool in Vehicle Tracking software (AVT) from Autodesk, Inc., comes into play. It contains a powerful roundabout design tool that generates a fully dynamic corridor, not just 2D alignments. It sets up baselines, regions, targets, and so on, all for you, and it gives you the ability to modify the design afterwards. This class will take a deep dive into this toolset, exposing its pros and cons and teaching you how the software can improve your roundabout design processes.

Federal, state, local, and city governments are setting ambitious targets for reducing energy consumption of existing buildings through building retrofits. A challenge has been the scaling of energy analysis across large building portfolios in order to identify and prioritize the buildings and retrofit measures. Prior methods were limited to single buildings, but this session will introduce new capabilities that enable evaluation of entire building portfolios with minimal data inputs required. Results are presented dynamically in the context of a digital model and a custom Forge-based building portfolio management dashboard that serves as an executive summary for users or consumers of the rapid energy modeling (REM) tools, and enables easier communication and understanding of the workflow and results with clients. This infrastructure symposium session is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) discussion focused on effective practices between owners and the engineering ecosystem regarding large transportation projects. Generative Design has brought a paradigm shift in the way we design. In early 2019 we launched a Proof of Concept for this new approach, taking advantage of our BIM and Station concept expertise. Having disseminated state-of-the-art Generative Design knowledge among our technical team, we began an ‘awareness phase’ and chose a subject for Proof of Concept from a range of study cases. The test application that we present today aims to help architects in Functional Program of Metro Station. We would like to share with you our experience from the last 12 months of experimentation.

The aging of bridges and increased vehicular traffic has made it important that elevated highway structures receive timely and accurate inspections. Today's procedures for inspections require special equipment, disrupt traffic flow, and expose inspection personnel to safety hazards. The advent of drones that can carry cameras in close proximity to elevated structures presents an opportunity to conduct inspections quickly, safely, and effectively. Towards this goal, this class presents an end-to-end system for robotic bridge inspection. The system creates flight missions; evaluates visual quality of data collection; generates 3D models; detects and localizes surface distresses in 3D; and generates reports complying with the requirements of highway agencies. We’ll share lessons learned from deploying this system on 30 bridge inspection projects in the United States and Japan concerning procedures for documenting, communicating, and following up on bridge inspectors’ recommendations.

This class will provide basic to intermediate understanding of the Civil 3D Toolkit package in Dynamo for Civil 3D software. Learn how to capitalize on the Civil 3D Toolkit when solving basic to complex dynamo graph.

The construction industry has been notorious for relying on centuries-old processes to manage projects that are getting more complex and demanding faster execution. This class will discuss how Building Information Modeling (BIM) is making a shift by industrializing construction and setting up off-site assembly lines for manufacturing modules and subassemblies that can be assembled on-site by a lean team. In this session, we will discuss case studies from several iconic global project executions (airports, stadiums, and so on) where assembly line manufacturing construction processes were deployed for amazingly fast construction, reducing the on-site work, wastages, and costs. The main focus of this class is on building the network and involving all stakeholders in the use of BIM to support modular design and industrialized construction. Attendees will learn when and how to set up these assembly lines and discover the challenges associated with them.

How should a design surface be expressed through panels? How can the architect ensure that a facade-design intent is honored all the way through to fabrication? Learn from Building Information Modeling (BIM)-oriented and computational strategies used by Safdie Architects in the context of Revit software and the Dynamo extension. Examples are chosen from the recently completed Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and Project Jewel at Changi Airport (now under construction). For design surfaces that are flat, simply curved, or optimized for myriad constraints, learn how to control panel families and types in Revit software using Dynamo. We will cover methods for laying out panels, managing edge conditions, and embedding panel elements with rich data for downstream consumption. We will share how we have used computational techniques in Revit software to cut out concerns for cost and risk to fabricators by providing well-studied, straightforward design documentation. This session features Revit and Dynamo Studio.

Follow the process of building a roll cage for a truck that has been raced in multiple “24 hours of LeMons” races. First the truck is laser scanned using a Faro scanner. Then ReCap software and ReMake software are used to prepare the scan for work in Alias software. Alias is used to visualize the scan data and create the roll cage. Drawings are created as patterns for the bends and lengths of the cage. The interior sheet metal is removed in tight clearance areas, and then the roll cage is installed.

This class will discuss how reality capture BIM (Building Information Modeling) was utilized at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by multiple architects, engineers, construction managers, construction engineers, and building owners. The class will discuss how the owners and AEC teams worked together to effectively utilize BIM and reality capture data. We’ll explore what various workflows yielded the most success within Revit software, Civil 3D software, ReCap software, and BIM 360 software.
