VRED Professional: An API Overview with Focus on Creating Custom User Interfaces
This course will provide an overview of VRED Professional software’s API, with a focus on how to create custom user interfaces. Topics will include the various VRED software products and the level of API support for each; an introduction to Python scripting programming; instructions on how to use the VRED Professional software’s API; and instructions on how to integrate your Python code into VRED Professional software. We will also cover what's new in the VRED Professional 2016 software’s API; an introduction to PySide software; an example of VRED Professional software custom user interfaces using PySide; and how to control VRED Professional software from a web browser, as well as other topics.

Go with the Flow: Common Workflow Process in VRED Professional Software
This class teaches the common workflow process used in VRED Professional software to create high-quality, real-time renderings that realistically visualize design ideas. The class will begin by opening a native VRED (.vpb) design model as a real-time rendering in the default OpenGL render method. Students will learn to optimize the model by fixing the geometry and using Scenegraph to organize the parts. We will assign VRED Professional software materials and we will modify them to dress up the geometry so that the visual display is enhanced and the realism is improved. Finally, we will modify the render setting options to obtain a high-quality rendering, and then we will create an image for presentation. The class will finish with a brief discussion about the raytracing render method and how it creates renderings with physically correct lighting, reflections, refractions, and shadows.

Stingray and VRED: Combination for Sales and Marketing Train Configurators
Alstom uses VRED Professional software to produce high-quality imagery for project communication, as well as real-time-experiences production for design reviews and communication movies, enabling a single-visualization digital mockup. Meanwhile, Alstom also needs to make sure its designs reach a broader population that includes external teams and individuals, and from this perspective, the communication production workflow is provided by Stingray game engine. This talk will describe the collaboration between Alstom and Autodesk, Inc., to build a VRED data workflow that capitalizes on Stingray game engine as an output source for their designs, consequently extending the reach of their project communication capabilities. This session features VRED Professional and Autodesk Stingray.

Alias and VRED Instruction Methodology from Auburn University
In the spring of 2024, the legendary Jeff Smith connected Associate Professor Bush from Auburn University with an OEM partner to explore what it would look like to team a group of graduate industrial design students with a seasoned digital vehicle designer. Through this interaction emerged a five-week section in Alias AutoStudio software and a five-week section in VRED software, using the Auburn instructor's background in surface modeling with the OEM partner's background in SubD and mesh modeling. This proposal compares the CAD instruction methodology that has been implemented at Auburn University for the past three years with the experimental, collaborative approach with the OEM. We will highlight the changes in student outcomes, as well as the implications of knowing SubD/hybrid modeling moving into the design profession.

Virtual Reality Applications in Transportation Design Education

Vehicle design requires the development of virtual and physical tridimensional models to translate concepts generated by freehand drawing and renderings. This iterative process is very valuable but highly resource-consuming in time, cost, and effort-not only in the modeling process itself, but also in learning time, prototyping, and finishing. With schools tied to the duration of academic terms and student budgets, projects are limited to only CAD and/or scale physical models. However, recently available virtual reality (VR) devices offer alternatives to bridge that gap, enabling full-size 3D drawing exploration and visualization of CAD in small and full scale. This session will discuss the use of VR software and Maya software for initial exploration, as well as VRED software for visualization of vehicle concepts using the HTC Vibe. It describes where in the design process these tools are used, as well as the setup used at the Transportation Design Program at the University of Cincinnati.

In this presentation, car designer Ning Ding will show best practices in automotive design through fast concept modeling, sketching, rendering, and animation workflows. Drawing on the full power available in Alias AutoStudio, Ning will share how designers and digital sculptors can work together during this process to bring a design to life. Ning will share live demo vignettes to show how designers can sketch and even directly create concept model by Alias, Speedform and Maya, visualize and render the 3D model in VRED and even create animations and cool scenes in Maya. Ning will also share insights into the current state of the automotive design market in China, where he has both practiced as a professional designer as well as his current job as a subject matter expert working for Autodesk.
