Storytelling has been present within architecture as long as the domain itself has existed. Initially, it was done with hand representations of volumes and narratives told over the sheets of paper. As the technology progresses, new ways of telling stories emerge: Renderings became easier and cheaper, causing their function to evolve. Industry saw a shift from only using them for end results (artifacts) to real-time renderings focused on driving communication and decision making. Now, with the democratization of AI, we are facing new possibilities: Visualization for ideation, but also for even faster creation of realistic outputs. This opens the doors for more-effective, data-driven storytelling throughout the design stages. In this live demonstration of the Veras extension within Autodesk Forma and Revit software, we'll show you how to easily create stunning visualizations and convert them to create compelling, data-driven storyboards throughout design stages using Autodesk Forma.

You’ve no doubt seen great training videos and course guides that made learning seem easy. Well it’s time for you to create these types of resources yourself—but where do you start? What kind of hardware, software, sound equipment, scripts, and cameras do you need to become your own video/training producer? In this class, we will answer these questions while passing along effective practices for using Camtasia software as our editing tool of choice. We will show you how to set up a video-capture environment and produce output for computers, Apple iPads, and television. We will cover storyboarding, audio/video capturing, using voice recognition, captioning, and basic voice-over editing. We will also discuss some techniques you can use to refine your training using video drafting to evaluate your technique, voice, and pacing. If you’ve wanted to start making your own training videos but weren't sure how to do it, this class will give you everything you need to get started.

In this class you will gain an understanding of a commercial production that uses only computer graphics. This is a 2-part series that will cover the entire process of creating a commercial spec spot for the HBO show Boardwalk Empire. In part 1 you'll see the project kick off from the storyboards phase and proceed through rough animation and visual effects. We will cover some topics that include modeling, texturing, and dynamics. These classes will utilize an array of tools, including 3ds Max software and Chaos Group's V-Ray rendering engine, to bring this piece to life.

A key requirement for a transportation project to be eligible for federal funding is completion of a noise assessment. If post-development noise levels are determined to be above a certain threshold, sound mitigation may be required pending a vote by those who would benefit from the reduction of noise. In this session, we'll review a real-world case study in which InfraWorks software was used to create a detailed model of a completed roadway design. Using the InfraWorks web viewer, the model was shared with voters to help them understand the visual impacts of a potential sound wall. We will demonstrate advanced workflows for importing and configuring CAD, geographic information system (GIS), and imagery data in InfraWorks to create a detailed visualization model. We'll also explore the use of custom InfraWorks schema, create new styles using imported materials, optimize scenarios for online viewing, and demonstrate storyboard creation techniques.

This class will cover the development of an InfraWorks software model from a wide variety of data sources. We will examine the various subjects, including the importation of geographic information system (GIS) raster and vector data, 3D models, civil 3D surfaces and alignments, creation of custom 3D models in 3ds Max software, and use of storyboard and export to create compelling project videos. We will examine workflows of an actual project and we'll focus on the process used to develop an InfraWorks software model for the modernization of a generating facility in Tempe, Arizona. This model has been used in the public outreach process.

Point clouds can be a wealth of information for modeling and design projects, and the large data sets of point clouds can provide amazingly detailed models when viewed in InfraWorks software. But managing these data sets and importing the point clouds can be a challenge. And then, once you have the point cloud imported, what’s next? In this session, we will show how to create a model from scratch and how to import large point clouds and data sets. We’ll demonstrate a simple but effective method to manage large collections of point clouds when bringing them into InfraWorks, and then show how to use the point clouds to extract vertical features such as transformers, poles, and street furniture. This method can be employed for a variety of items, and then the features can be styled to reflect the goals for your 3D model. We will also walk through the process of creating a storyboard and a fly-through that will impress your stakeholders and provide detailed information in a visually informative model.

Although InfraWorks software was created for designers and civil engineers to plan and design infrastructure projects in the context of the real world, it is useful as a site logistics planning tool. This class will cover workflows on how to use InfraWorks 360 software to create professional 3D site logistics plans. We will use InfraWorks 360 software’s model builder to create the site background, use ReCap Photo software to import a 3D model created from site photos, use Bluebeam to create annotated terrain overlays, and show how to import 3D models from several sources such as SketchUp and Revit software to create equipment libraries. We will use the proposals tab to model the different phases of construction, enabling phased site logistics. And we will review how to use coverage areas to model excavation in the 3D terrain. We will also show how to export professional graphics using the storyboard, and we will discuss how to import these models for use in virtual reality.

This extremely dynamic, feature-filled class will help you to evaluate in context, analyze, and communicate your highly detailed land development site projects using InfraWorks and Civil 3D. We will use real-world projects with InfraWorks 360 and Civil 3D models at the 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% design stages for quality design checks and public involvement reviews. More specifically, we will bring these sites to life with buildings, ponds, ADA access, accurate parking stripes, and pavement markings. Next, we'll demonstrate how to add more depth by randomizing the vehicles and vegetation with Java script that you can tailor to your own requirements. We'll also uncover the secrets of when to use IMX, DAE, SDF, and others file formats to greatly increase your productivity and improve file management. High-quality architectural presentations are more than just good-looking renders; your images need to tell a compelling story. This course will show you how to use 3ds Max software to create cinema-quality presentations and expertly showcase your architectural projects. The course will explain the basics of composition and visual storytelling from a filmmaker’s perspective, including such topics as storyboarding, shot selection, shot sequencing, and screen motion. We’ll then dive into camera techniques and workflow in 3ds Max, including camera selection, animation, rigging, and rendering, following through to postproduction and final output. The class will go through the different steps of developments of a virtual-reality (VR) experience applied to the field of architecture and real estate. The class will discuss planning, scripting, storyboarding, prototyping, shooting for VR content, shooting aerial content for VR, producing 3D computer-generated content, and tracking live-action spherical content for VR. We’ll also discuss visual effects, compositing, and post-production for VR content. We’ll cover the planning and implementation of the experience—the distribution of the experience. This class will illustrate the storytelling process undertaken for a recent international airport design competition in Dalian, China, and the critical role storytelling played in the firm’s competition submittal. The class will demonstrate how a variety of media was used to create an inspiring video that set the firm’s submittal apart from its competition. We will explore each phase of the project, starting with discovery and storyboards. Then we will move into a discussion of production for both live and CG elements, and we’ll end with compositing and editing. We will explain why key decisions were made and when they were made to get the best results. The audience will gain an understanding for each part of the process by seeing real-world examples and behind-the-scenes footage during each phase. Finally, we will share successes and lessons learned from our experience working with 2 Design and Production Teams that were on opposite sides of the world and 14 hours apart.

ArX Solutions is a top U.S. visualization firm founded 19 years ago. We’ve created more than 5,000 images and over 200 films and animations. At the beginning of 2015 we were asked to create a film with live actors to show the vision for the New Waldorf Astoria. There was a big catch: it had to be finished in less than 30 days from beginning to end. In this class we will show the different steps taken to make this happen. This includes the script creation: coming up with a good idea; the storyboard: communicating our ideas to the client; the 3D when there was no design in place: the charrette process and work on site with the designers; and the green screen production. We will also cover tips and tricks; how to plan the shots in a way that work for a short timeframe; using 3D Max software and optimization of the rendering times through different scripts; the post production: blending all the pieces together; and the audio track: how it is as important as the visuals.

This session will cover many areas, including 1) Better analytics: Member Limits by Services lacks the detail to understand which areas of your business are getting the most benefit from BIM 360 software and where more support is needed; 2) Data downloading: We have previously only been able to see user status and last sign-in, but it was not linked to the other valuable data in BIM 360 that the data extractor provides; 3) Data cleaning: Microsoft Power BI's Query Editor enables noncoders to transform data sets into a usable format in an intuitive user interface where any Microsoft Excel user will feel at home; 4) Dashboard reports: Once the downloads from the data extractor have been transformed and loaded into Power BI, you can create visual reports that show a high level of detail on BIM 360 usage. To get the same level of understanding you would need to visit many admin pages; and 5) Storyboarding reports: Care should be taken to construct a visual report that first explores trends before progressively drilling down through subcategories to examine detail.
