Reducing Embodied Carbon in Roads and Highways: A New Data Interchange

Roads and highways are responsible for more than a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, with 7.3% of global emissions coming from their construction materials (Architecture 2030). Global regulations and incentives to cut these upfront carbon emissions are growing, including the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, and the EU Green Public Procurement. This panel discussion will feature international practitioners and data platform providers who are working to decarbonize roads and highways. Civil 3D software can be a critical piece of this effort, if integrated with sustainability tools. The discussion will cover the opportunities and hurdles faced by engineering companies and technology providers as the infrastructure industry aims to improve its impact on climate change.

Let's Hit the Road, Jack: A BIM Workflow for Roads and Highways

This class takes you through an example workflow for a road and highway design project using Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate 2014 software. We start with InfraWorks™ software for the conceptual and preliminary design phases. InfraWorks 360™ is used to perform vertical optimization of the road design. Then it is moved into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software for the detailed design and construction documentation phases. Next, we take the design into Navisworks® Manage software to perform clash detections and validate the design components coming from Revit® Structure software and Civil 3D. Finally, the design goes back into InfraWorks and into 3ds Max® Design software to perform visual communication about the design to key stakeholders. Various types of analysis is performed along the way to validate the design and ensure design parameters are being met.

Get Moving with Autodesk Infrastructure Solutions for Transportation Projects

This session will walk through a typical highway/road design transportation project workflow using the full suite of infrastructure solutions using InfraWorks software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Navisworks software, Revit software, and Structural Bridge Design software. We will look at the following workflows: InfraWorks road layout tools and component roads for preliminary design; cloud services for corridor and profile optimization for Greenfield or Brownfield projects; the creation of bridge structures and evaluating bridge design with line girder analysis; modeling and analyzing of watersheds, culverts, and drainage networks; the moving of preliminary designs from InfraWorks to AutoCAD Civil 3D software for detailed design and documentation; the moving of bridges from InfraWorks to Revit to make a more parametric structural bridge; and the transfer of detailed design elements back to InfraWorks 360 software to visualize and communicate design intent.

Steps Toward the flow in the Infrastructure Industry with ACC: Owner-Led Data Sharing and Management Reform

NEXCO CENTRAL is a road management company constructing and managing highways in the central Japan area (total length: 2,183 km). Impeding challenges—aging highways and labor shortages in the construction industry—make the improvement on productivity at construction sites a high priority. In an attempt to tackle down the challenges, we started considering using BIM from 2017 to shift from analog data-centered to digitized-data-centered construction management. In 2020, we’d established standards necessary for BIM use and set a policy to embrace intelligent models in design and construction phases, ICT construction, and a common data environment (CDE). Based on this policy, BIM was finally applied to the design and construction phase from July 2025. In addition, we adopted Autodesk Construction Cloud to realize a CDE to streamline the legacy means of communication between multiple project stakeholders. In this session, you will gain insights and tips on how to realize an owner-led CDE.

Bridge Modeling Approaches

This roundtable session focuses on the Autodesk® solution for design and implementation of typical overpass bridges. We also evaluate approaches for working with tunnels, retaining walls, and other structural elements that are common to road, rail, and highway projects. Attendees can learn how these structures can be initially located by the roadway engineer in the context of the road or rail model, further designed and detailed by the structural engineer, and finally used by the contractor for construction planning. Key to this workflow is the ability for all project participants including civil, structural, contractors, and owners to work in a coordinated way with the goal of reducing production cost, compressing project timeline, mitigating risk and improving the overall quality of the end product. This session has a live walk-through of the process, primarily using a combination of AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, the Civil 3D Bridge Module, and Revit® Structure software.

InfoDrainage for Transportation Projects: From Concept to Detailed Design

In this session, we'll explore the intricacies of drainage design workflows for transportation projects, including rail, roads, and highways. Using Autodesk's InfoDrainage and Civil 3D software, we'll present a streamlined workflow that facilitates the interaction and data exchange between both software solutions, with a special emphasis on drainage for transportation-related projects. One of the key learnings will be spotlighting the data exchange and results migration capabilities between civil design software (Civil 3D) and drainage design software (InfoDrainage), without the interjection of spreadsheets. Additionally, we'll highlight InfoDrainage software's machine learning (ML) deluge feature, with emphasis on its potential to expedite the concept and early planning process by rapidly identifying ponding locations on a site. Testing data showed the ML deluge outperforming traditional deluge by identifying ponding on a site in four seconds compared to more than nine minutes.

Route Planning Using InfraWorks: A "How To" Class by Autodesk and CDM Smith

This class covers the use of InfraWorks software as a tool for sketching, designing, and evaluating multiple design alternatives using the cloud in the context of transportation route planning. This class shows you how CDM Smith used InfraWorks to plan the realignment and reconstruction of an existing county road project that improves habitat connectivity (reducing the risk of conflicts between vehicles and wildlife) and ties in to a major interchange on Florida's highway system. A second project shows how CDM Smith applied InfraWorks to model a new connector roadway between existing arterials that serve a heavily traveled tourist area in the steep terrain of East Tennessee.

Managing Heavy Highway in Real-Time

The United Kingdom Highways Agency (US DOT equivalent) has recently standardized all design work for Major Roads Civil Engineering projects to be completed in Autodesk Civil 3D® Software. This provides a powerful platform for designers and architects to produce complex and detailed design information such as alignments, surfaces, linework, but also raises a question of how the data gets to the project in a seamless and often instant on-demand work flow? How do contractors, engineering surveyors and machines to have access to the design data in a format that they can use instantaneously without out the need for file conversion on the project site. In partnership with Autodesk, Topcon has provided such a solution working inside Civil 3D with a plug and play ribbon that allows all design files required for the project site to be created inside Civil 3D and sent seamlessly to the machine or contractor either through the cloud or using conventional data transfer methods.

AutoCAD Civil 3D Integration Requirements: BIM Process Optimization for Infrastructure

During this class the participants will learn about the Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes designed and implemented by Egis Group for highways and road design. The class will focus on the standardization of design and collaboration in infrastructure projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Through relevant projects examples (highways, airports), the participants will discover how to deploy a collaborative standardization on the AutoCAD Civil 3D software platform. The participants will also learn how to manage standardization for multidisciplinary applications such as roads, bridges, airports, and so on. Here Comes the Flood: How to Use BIM for Flood Restoration

In 2000, the Dora River flash flood demolished part of Highway A5 in Northwestern Italy, and there were huge economic and environmental damages. In this session, Ativa Engineering will show the solution that was adopted to ensure road safety. The project includes the erection of the highway’s profile for 10 km, the construction of 3 viaducts, and the adjustment of all overpasses and underpasses to enable the safe flow of the flash flood. In the road infrastructure field the Building Information Modeling (BIM) application is, today, a strong unknown factor due to the complexity of works and their multidisciplinarity. To test the BIM methodology, we’ve changed a “classic design” into a “BIM design,” in order to assess critical situations and potentiality. We’ve realized an engineered and hierarchical process that enables you to create and validate an effective communication structure between the different areas of the project and guarantee the production of smart models.
