This lecture will focus on the workflow associated with collecting point cloud data and bringing it into Revit software and 3ds Max Design software for project interaction and improvement of projects' accuracy and quality. In addition, we will explore the timesaving features of using digitally collected data for integration in 3D modeling software. Attendees will bring point cloud data into Revit software and 3ds Max software to create a project. They will learn the workflow and be able to describe the process of merging and using the data.

This class will demonstrate briefing processes for both your clients and surveyors to ensure the captured data is fit for your purposes and tips and tricks for using the data efficiently in Revit to produce models to satisfy any intended use

The speed and cost of obtaining laser scans has made it realistic to generate point-cloud data for every renovation project, particularly detail-sensitive historic preservation projects. However, not all point clouds are created equal. How do you specify laser scan services so costs can be compared between providers? How can you ensure that the delivered data will meet your requirements? This presentation will review requirements for specifying laser scan services so the point cloud level of accuracy is appropriate for your project. We will review US Institute of Building Documentation (USIBD) level of accuracy (LOA) specification documents to help define this task. Once you have point clouds, how do you use them? Point clouds are extremely large and accurate. Using them in Revit software requires planning and an understanding of model requirements. A historic preservation project case study will illustrate benefits and pitfalls, and we’ll present tips and tricks for modeling efficiently.

This class will provide all the necessary information to import, process, and extract information from point cloud data in Autodesk, Inc., architecture, engineering, and construction products. More specifically, this class will teach surface/terrain generation from high-resolution point cloud data in InfraWorks software, and it will demonstrate how to use it in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. The class will also cover how to model city asset features to create a virtual city model, and how to bring those city assets into a design product, such as AutoCAD Civil 3D software, as Coordinate Geometry (COGO) points. This class has no prerequisite. Any knowledge of InfraWorks software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, and point clouds will be helpful in understanding the class material. At the end of this class, attendees will be able to use point cloud data with ease and confidence for their modeling and design projects. This session features InfraWorks 360 and AutoCAD Civil 3D.

This is where the laser scanning of existing spaces is best utilized. Laser scanning enables the design and construction teams to collect 3D color images that, when assembled using ReCap software into a single file, enable users to "walk-through" the 3D space as though they were actually in the space in person. Users are able to navigate through the spaces as well as take relevant dimensions without ever having to get on a ladder or even leave their desks. Laser scanning saves time and provides additional levels of detail that pictures alone can't achieve. This roundtable will discuss how companies are currently utilizing point cloud data along with best workflows to maximize the value provided, along with industry trends. There's a misconception that AutoCAD Civil 3D software is not very good at using large point-cloud data sets. This class will squash these rumors and open eyes to the actual ease. This class will cover the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D with Leica's CloudWorx add-on. We'll examine the ease of navigating through the different point-cloud data sets inside the AutoCAD Civil 3D environment. We'll touch on ways to verify accuracies of previous tradition surveys, and we'll examine newer collections procedures like terrestrial LIDAR and unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) point clouds. We'll show you several examples of projects with complex existing conditions that created hurdles in design. We'll show how these hurdles can be overcome by using simple add-on tools like CloudWorx.

Why model as-built conditions when you can work directly with a high-resolution point cloud? In this very hands-on class we will stake out the foundations for a new addition to our Autodesk University (AU) classroom using a remarkably easy, cloud-enabled workflow. First, participants will import a point cloud of our AU classroom into Navisworks Manage software. We will then use Point Layout software to place points on a number of modeled objects that we intend to stake out as part of a small classroom renovation. The model will be shared with the field using BIM 360 Glue cloud service. Finally, we will connect the BIM 360 Layout iPad application to a robotic total station to enable field users to stake out and verify the exact position of the points. All of this will happen using a contextual model of our surroundings.

Utilizing point clouds from several different reality-capture methods (including photogrammetry, tripod-mounted laser scanners, handheld laser scanners, ground-penetrating radar, aerial LiDAR (light detection and ranging), and 3D underground locates) we will generate 3D designs in AutoCAD Utility Design software. Linework and terrain models generated from point clouds in AutoCAD Civil 3D software will be imported into AutoCAD Utility Design software to automate 3D design and elevations by accurately referencing 3D design elements to the terrain. We will reference in several other point clouds from different reality-capture methods, and generate 3D designs based off of the geometry of these point clouds. This will include aligning proposed underground utilities to existing underground utilities based off of point cloud geometry, and adjusting alignments of underground utility routes based off of 3D alignments of other utilities. Let's dive into the complete process of creating an .rcp file while in ReCap Pro software and importing the point cloud into InfraWorks software, and see the step-by-step process of creating both a usable InfraWorks surface but also extracting features from your point cloud using both the new point cloud terrain and point cloud modeling tools within InfraWorks. The point cloud modeling tool is like your description keys in AutoCAD Civil 3D software, but instead of 2D blocks you'll get 3D features like power poles and trees automatically inserted into your model. We'll take you step by step through the process to help save you time.

Point clouds are more than just dots in space. They represent existing walls, doors, pipes, ground surfaces and so much more. They represent millions and millions of individual pieces of information. And because of this, their file size can be enormous and often difficult to work with. But it doesn't have to be that way. This class will demonstrate ways that you can take advantage of the new scan-to-mesh and publish features in ReCap Pro to share, view, comment, and collaborate on your point clouds. We'll also look at ways you can utilize point clouds in an efficient and effective manner by extracting only the relevant information for your design.

Navisworks 2014 software onwards gained an enhanced capability to utilize point cloud data via the use of the ReCap software engine. The aim of this class is to demonstrate how you can use this enhanced capability on infrastructure projects with point clouds upward of 2.5 billion points. As infrastructure engineers we often have to work around existing constraints of buildings, footbridges, flyovers, railway arches, bridges, and a wide range of other structures, all of which need clearances from our carriageway envelopes. We will look at how you can use these large point clouds to not only demonstrate these interactions to our clients and stakeholders, but also to utilize the model to check lateral and headroom clearances and visually inspect visibility issues.

Point clouds can be a wealth of information for modeling and design projects, and the large data sets of point clouds can provide amazingly detailed models when viewed in InfraWorks software. But managing these data sets and importing the point clouds can be a challenge. And then, once you have the point cloud imported, what’s next? In this session, we will show how to create a model from scratch and how to import large point clouds and data sets. We’ll demonstrate a simple but effective method to manage large collections of point clouds when bringing them into InfraWorks, and then show how to use the point clouds to extract vertical features such as transformers, poles, and street furniture. This method can be employed for a variety of items, and then the features can be styled to reflect the goals for your 3D model. We will also walk through the process of creating a storyboard and a fly-through that will impress your stakeholders and provide detailed information in a visually informative model.

In this session, we'll walk through an end-to-end cloud-centered workflow on using large point-cloud data for detailed design using ReCap Pro software and the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform. We will share simple tools to prepare surfaces, intelligently decimate large point-cloud data, publish to Autodesk Construction Cloud, and collaboratively extract design elements (like curbs, gutters, median, walls, ADA ramps, driveways, and drainage breaklines) and assets via browser and take them into detailed design technology like Civil 3D software to generate highly accurate surface models. Users can also publish the extracted features and assets to ArcGIS to use the information across the organization. This is a workflow the point cloud industry has been wanting for decades!

In this session, we'll walk through a complete workflow starting inside ReCap Pro software, and publishing a point cloud to the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform. We'll extract linear features and bring them into Civil 3D software so we can create a simplified but highly accurate surface model. From there, we will publish the linear features as as-built information to ArcGIS Online for everyone to use. This is a workflow you've been asking for!

We will cover the various techniques used in the film and television industry when dealing with sensitive sites or locations. This class will also address the use of ReCap Pro software for reality capture using point clouds with photogeometry and exporting the appropriate file format when importing into Revit software to assist in the manipulation of the site design (set design). We’ll examine use of storyboard techniques translated by production designers to create construction documents and renderings for both site location and set designs (exterior and interior) with Revit and 3ds Max software. We’ll also learn how cloud collaboration improves the workflow between various disciplines within the art department and production show runners for faster turnaround using virtual reality walk-throughs. We’ll also examine immersive design with the use of augmented reality and mixed reality to determine what is actually constructed, what is virtually constructed, and what is sent out for fabrication when constructing film sets.

This class will guide participants on how to plan for using large amounts of point cloud data across multiple offices quickly and efficiently. The key planning aspects we will cover will be how to handle all sizes of laser scanning projects and how to define an accurate scope when doing a scanning request for proposal (RFP). The project examples for this class will highlight how 500 GB-plus of point cloud data with staff members in 7 offices across the United States and an office in India was set up to decrease wide-area network latency and also improve workstation performance. Software workflows will show how laser scans were set up, including existing conditions model, demonstration drawings creation, and new design coordination with existing point clouds. The software discussed in this class will focus on ReCap 360 software, Navisworks software, and Revit software. There is also a lab that coincides with the concepts discussed in this lecture.
