This session will give you an overview on how Within software and Netfabb software can help you achieve these benefits. We’ll look at how to capitalize on Within software to create optimized component design using lattice-based optimization while following machine constraints. The goal is to preserve structural performance while lightweighting a part without violating design or AM constraints. We will also look at how Netfabb software provides quality control on the final part, providing support generation and slicing data for the AM machine targeted. Multiaxis, large-scale 3D printing opens the doors to new application fields for engineers, architects, designers, and scientists. For this, the Netfabb and PowerMill high-rate technology combined with Autodesk tools like Autodesk Nastran software, PowerInspect software, Inventor software, and Fusion 360 software create new possibilities in design and manufacturing. This class will also cover examples from our industrial and research partners and show a workflow for high-rate deposition.

Autodesk Advanced Consulting and General Motors are working in collaboration on the future of design to create important new vehicles. The application of generative design is a key part of this engagement, and in this class, we will explore the application of this technology. We will look at the evolution of the design from conception to manufacturing and some of the wider considerations in the design approach. An overview of the broader generative-design application will be shared, as well as a deep dive into a generative-designed component. We will cover the streamlined workflow utilizing Fusion 360 software, generative design, and Netfabb software to achieve design for additive manufacturing. The methodologies and design approaches will be presented by representatives from Advanced Consulting and General Motors. There will also be some GM-manufactured artifacts to see. Our aim is that attendees leave with a familiarity with the generative-design process and how industry is applying this to real problems.

This presentation will focus on simulation techniques used to compare traditional hurling stick material and performance against a composite redesign. We used several Autodesk tools—including Fusion 360 software, Netfabb software, Moldflow, and Autodesk Nastran software—to evaluate and optimize the performance of the composite structure.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is one of the most predominantly used additive manufacturing (AM) technologies today, producing functional metallic parts in several industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive. As an emerging and complex technology, the manufacturing design guidelines and rules of LPBF along with its impact on sustainability are not well understood. This session builds off design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) principles as they apply to specific process parameters and machine dynamics defined in LPBF. These include recoater blade interference, support structure, and part distortion. This session also provides insight into the impact of AM on sustainability, as well as highlighting key design considerations to improving the implications on sustainability. With these considerations in mind, the session will explore how a user can implement design variables into their workflow using Autodesk Netfabb and its Simulation Utility.

We’ll start by exploring the basics of Generative Design in Fusion 360 software, then look at how understanding the inputs can help us to design not only functional but also fun designs. To make our new artistic design, we need to explore how 3D printers see the designs. Small tweaks can help the 3D printer create better results. We will show examples of artistic designs and the quality of the 3D-printed outcomes.

Autodesk CAD, CAM, and CAE Solutions can be applied to the design and manufacture of high-quality molds to produce visually and dimensionally correct plastic parts at minimum cycle time. Moldflow tools ensure optimum mold design based on such considerations as best feed and cooling system placement and sizing. Designing molds for balanced and easy cavity filling will reduce mold stresses and extend mold life. Autodesk CAM tools, from Delcam, facilitate efficient design and manufacture of precision molds using subtractive and additive methods. Additive methods (also known as 3D printing) enable the manufacture of innovative, complex, and lighter-weight components in various applications. Netfabb tools can automatically generate lighter-weight designs, and then optimize component orientation, deflections, and supports to make the additive manufacturing process successful. This class will show the workflow utilizing the Moldflow, CAM, and Netfabb software systems to ensure right-first-time manufacturing.

The purpose of this class is to present an end-to-end workflow for generative and lattice design in the Automotive and Aerospace industry, using software and technology from Autodesk, Inc. At this moment in time, Autodesk is the only technology innovator that offers this unique capability—using their advanced software technology—for design, simulation, generative design (topology, skin, and lattice optimization), build simulation, build preparation, and advanced manufacturing methods. The class will demonstrate step by step the process involved in taking a component through design, simulation, optimization, build preparation, build simulation, post-build verification, and finishing. The class will educate attendees who wish to learn about the processes and challenges involved in additive design, lost-PLA casting and manufacturing. The software being demonstrated for the workflow includes Fusion 360 and Netfabb. This class will also present some of the challenges and solutions for certification.

Engineers and designers face an internal struggle when choosing between traditional design methods engrained through years of practice and new Generative Design workflows. Simply applying traditional design methods to Generative Design tools often leads to insufficient results which can be used for inspiration, but are not ready for manufacture. This hands-on lab will bridge the gap between traditional and Generative Design workflows, empowering users to complete the design process by leveraging Generative Design in powerful ways. Attendees will leverage Autodesk Generative Design alongside Meshmixer, Netfabb, Fusion 360, and Nastran to create a finished product, while exploring workflows which greatly improve productivity.

Project MOnACO (Manufacturing Of a large-scale AM Component) is a $1.1 million research collaboration with GE Aviation et al. funded by the Clean Sky 2 program. The focus is to cut noise and emissions from the civil aerospace market using disruptive technologies. The aim is to converge design and manufacturing using the A.T.L.A.S. machine that’s currently the largest metal powder additive manufacturing of its kind (build size >1m). Autodesk is leading the design of the turbine center frame assembly using multiphysics Generative Design in Autodesk Fusion 360, the new product design extension for lattices and manufacturing simulation (Netfabb et al.) workflows geared toward large-scale additive manufacturing. The latest design is 34% lighter than its predecessor, and the components have been consolidated from 150 parts to a single part. In this talk, we’ll discuss how we applied Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) workflows using Autodesk design and make tools to solve tomorrow's problems.

Autodesk has historically developed software and provided consulting services for metal additively manufactured (AM) lattice-type structures. Common powder-bed processes include SLM (Selective Laser Melting) / DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), and EBM (Electron Beam Melting). When considering real-life applications of these structures, many assumptions are made about the characteristics of the manufactured material. Among others, these include strength, elastic moduli, thermal properties, material density, surface finish, and structural stability. These characteristics are affected by many factors, including machine parameters, build orientation, and feature size. This session features Autodesk Explicit Solver, Nastran, Netfabb, Within.

Autodesk Generative Design gives users the ability to analytically engineer component models that adhere to multiple design and manufacturing constraints, which are optimized for Additive Manufacturing Processes. To use this tool to its fullest potential, a sound understanding of how it fits into the overall workflow of initial design thru manufacturing. This class will give users the opportunity to explore these workflows, and in doing so gain a good understanding of a successful generative design process..

With the announcement of Autodesk Generative Design, we take one of the most common structural engineering problems and turn it on its head. This class will teach you how to use AGD to discover unthought-of designs for a structural aerospace bracket. Learn how to go from seed geometry definition in Fusion 360, to problem definition, design generation, and results exploration in Autodesk Generative Design. Select from generated designs of different materials, safety factors and build constraints. Next, we use detailed non-linear finite element analysis in Fusion 360 to verify the selected Generative Design solution. Learn how to input non-linear properties for AM metals and correctly interpret finite element results. Once verified we will discuss AM (metal powder bed) build preparation with the help of Autodesk NetFabb. Finally, we will compare the performance of our new Generatively Designed bracket with that of the baseline (subtractive manufactured) bracket by physically breaking both of them!
