If you've ever designed the zoning of a building, any building, you know that functionality of spaces can be more important than anything. The more standardized operation and maintenance is, the more organized are the set of rules you have to take into consideration. Examples have been given in the past regarding stadiums, airports, and terminal stations. Generative design is the way of translating into computer language that which happens in your mind: a set of conditions that needs to be respected in order for your project to work. A hotel room is one of those distinctively rule-based spaces—there are a group of standardized key factors that govern its exact configuration. Once you determine those rules, you can use them to create the framework for a rapid generative exploration of alternatives, highlight discordances rapidly between brief expectations and the given boundaries, and check and double-check your ideas against operational routines. This class will walk through an early construction case study of a boutique dual-branded hotel in midtown Atlanta that began in January 2017. Beginning with establishing existing conditions and site logistics, working through MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) coordination and structure build up, this class will cover a wide variety of construction technology integration. Fully designed in Revit software, this project team embraced using the BIM 360 platform-including BIM 360 Docs software, BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Field software, and BIM 360 Team software-to manage documentation and project coordination between the design team, general contractor, and trade contractors. We'll also explore the benefits and challenges of reality capture and photogrammetry in an urban environment using laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights in conjunction with the ReCap Pro software.

Affordable construction is a serious problem that affects us all, and we face a growing housing shortage in the 21st century. It's widely believed that prefabrication and industrialized construction are strategies that can help the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry produce buildings much faster, less expensively, and of higher quality than traditional on-site construction methods. When done right, prefabrication delivers clear benefits to multifamily housing and hotels, but also comes with risks. The right issues must be de-risked to ensure project success, centered on establishing a digital fabrication approach of Rooms as a Product (RaaP). With RaaP, we can enable industrialized construction by connecting teams, processes, and partners. We give developers access to a vetted prefab ecosystem, standardized documents, and a modular certified process to manage workflows. We also digitize the fabricators' pipeline of orders to increase predictability and lower costs to support mass customization.

Industrialized construction is becoming a household name within the building industry due to its advantages in improving productivity, quality, accuracy, and efficiency. Applying innovative BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows and using advanced technologies through all stages from design to production has been one of Nordic Office of Architecture’s most important strategies for success in industrialized construction. In this class, you will gain insight into the Scandinavian way of industrialized construction, and see how a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the software development team of Project Frog has enabled new possibilities to aid in design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and BIM workflows. We will showcase both a large-scale hospital and a smaller-scale set of high-end prefabricated housing. This collaboration reflects on the challenges that architects and engineers have faced in the presence of repeating information, and provides a step-by-step workflow for similar projects (hotels, schools, office buildings, and so on).

A prefabrication strategy allows for the practice of lean concepts, while delivering a successful project. Prefabrication of MEP systems has been used in our industry for some time. A lot of the same benefits are realized in prefabricating architectural building elements. Various projects types fit the mold for prefabrication, including hospitals, institutions, hotels, and industrial facilities. All of these types of projects have something in common: highly-repetitive building components and systems. By incorporating a prefabrication strategy, a number of benefits are achievable, including reducing material handling, construction waste, delivery impacts to a congested site, and schedule. In addition, the quality of work is increased and safety is improved due to the controlled working environment. This class focuses on a recently completed healthcare project in which prefabrication was used and also highlights the challenges that were overcome to deliver a successful project.

Every morning, the PCL Construction team that’s building the 11-acre, 516-room JW Marriott Bonnet Creek hotel in Orlando, Florida, starts with the same routine: reviewing a high-resolution map of the site (captured by one of the firm’s daily drone flights) to effectively plan and coordinate the day’s work. A couple of years ago, using up-to-date drone maps for daily site and logistics planning was unheard of. Now, PCL project teams can’t live without them. This use case is part of a larger trend: drone data, once confined to the VDC team, has become a “must have” resource for entire project teams, owners, and more. In fact, on this JW Marriott project alone, there are more than 50 stakeholders regularly viewing their drone maps and models. In this session, PCL’s JW Marriott project team—Matthew Dodge, project manager; and Kevin Johnson, construction modeling specialist—will share the impact that drone data has had on this project and how other contractors can do the same.

In this class, we'll learn how to work with a workflow between InfraWorks software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, and Revit software together for master plan design. We'll start with the model builder extraction from InfraWorks of the site, then we'll look at how this file needs to be aligned with the actual topography survey on AutoCAD Civil 3D and back to InfraWorks, and how can we work with these 2 having interactions using the SDF format. Next we'll cover how to extract the topography models from InfraWorks and AutoCAD Civil 3D to Revit so any building pads and model elements can return or be used on both platforms to get quantities. We will explore 2 case examples of this workflow with a touristic walk-through of a hotel project in Huatulco, Mexico, and an urban planning project in Mexico City.

With examples of precast volumetric apartments, laminated structural timber frames and entire villa modules assembled and shipped to site, we will share lessons learned from managing information, design models and shop drawings during the design, procurement, and construction phases for 3,000 buildings. In this class you'll learn how to set up your construction data inside of 3ds Max software in order to create a data set that can be explored and lit directly in the game engine. To underline the power of using BitSquid engine for real-time visualization, we will use a data set to simulate evacuation procedures in case of catastrophic events such as fire or explosion.

Join us in this presentation as we showcase how we used 4D visual planning, laser scanning, model-based coordination, virtual mockups, and other virtual design and construction (VDC) tools and processes to overcome existing conditions and optimize the renovation process, which included the use of 206 prefabricated bathroom pods, for the 20 Mass Ave project located in Washington, D.C. The former office building is undergoing renovation to become a mixed-use location with retail space and a luxury hotel. By working together as a whole, these tools enabled the project team to streamline communication, reduce errors, and stay on schedule and budget. We'll also see how teams can then utilize a complete and accurate space inventory in Archibus to meet organization initiatives, namely a Return to Office (RTO) plan.

In this class I will discuss how we tackled a large complex structure using BIM. 10 Ionia was constructed on a 11,000 square foot triangular parking lot with a slight 7 foot slope in Grand Rapids, MI. This spatial problem was solved using precise layouts, precast concrete, and collaborative digital construction. The team used precast walls by Kerkstra Precast, a firm from Grandville, MI. Constructing a 13-story, 147-room hotel with precast elements with no true corners was very complex. It would have been a tall order without Autodesk products like Revit and BIM360. Plumbing and power had to be ran through from the core as new precast pieces were placed. BIM360 Glue was a crucial part of this undertaking, clash detection was a must with this project. The success of combining precast and software technologies is truly remarkable. At the end of this class I will show you drone footage of the complex structure.

We'll discuss visualization in virtual reality (VR) using large city data sets to plan, design, and market developments. Topics will include documenting cities through photogrammetry and how to utilize real-time city models in planning and design review. Using our highly detailed 3D model of San Francisco, we'll demonstrate the power of VR technology with a series of experiences at different phases of the project lifecycle. We'll showcase use scenarios for city planning, communicating, and marketing of hotel, commercial, and condominium development. This is not a step-by-step guide to creating VR experiences. We'll walk you through the streets of rapidly developing San Francisco neighborhoods. You should expect to gain a basic understanding of unique solutions possible for common challenges that developers and architects face.

Showcasing the 100,000m2 University hospital of Stavanger we will introduce new workflows in Revit for the seamless design of cross discipline modular and prefabricated components. The Scandinavian hospital proposes a giant lego-like assembly in its construction and tests currently unreleased Revit functionalities which have enabled the efficient control and development of the prefabrication strategy parallel to the overall project design.

We will present an interdisciplinary BIM workflow for the drawing and analysis of prefabricated components and show new techniques in data management which have allowed us to monitor component changes, identify deviations, and align project outputs with the information demands of the building industry. This class will also demonstrate how this methodology can be applicable to schools, hotels and other repetitive or prefabricated projects.
