The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is often put in the position to create engineering designs for several utility-related workflows. This design and engineering work is often done using Civil 3D software and is delivered as a stand-alone project via a set of design drawings. In many instances, the utility owner\operator takes that as-built data and drops it on a file server never to be seen again until it is needed. This transactional approach creates technical debt that places a burden on the utility and threatens the overall sustainability of the process. This instructional demo will work through a new way of supporting a sustainable collaboration and delivery model that aligns with the way of working preferred by owners and operators. Through the Autodesk \ Esri Alliance Partnership, we will illustrate some existing new methods to unlock the full value of a Civil 3D design drawing to populate and append an Esri ArcGIS Utility Network model that will support future design and engineering work in a sustainable manner.

At Southern California Edison (SCE), we have standardized and obtained efficiencies in our design and engineering processes by using AutoCAD Utility Design software as our transmission and distribution graphical design tool. This class will present the approach used to unify our design process using AutoCAD Utility Design, beginning with external work management through the workflow and ending with the validation of the design and bills of materials that are being sent to an external work management system. Along the way, we will discuss accessing external mapping/GIS and SAP® asset information within AutoCAD Utility Design and as well as the tool's ability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements throughout the design process. With an emphasis on realizing the benefits of an IPSEC-based (Initiate, Plan, Schedule, Execute, Close) work order lifecycle, we will also discuss SCE’s solution to transmission and distribution design interactivity through our estimating and material ordering phases and our approach to eliminating the need for manual entry directly into our SAP enterprise resource planning systems (ERP).

Sewer pipelines are buried and out of sight. They are underinvested in and rapidly deteriorating. There are millions of miles of sewer pipelines that require monitoring to determine the condition and performance of this critical infrastructure. The principal method that utilities use involves closed-circuit television (CCTV) mounted video cameras on crawler units. Video and photographs of the insides of pipes are interpreted by engineers trained in the art of sewer pipeline defect recognition. This time-consuming and expensive process usually carried out in the field is increasingly being challenged by the use of AI and machine learning (ML) image detection and recognition techniques. See how the integration of Autodesk's Info360 Asset SaaS asset management product and VAPAR AI/ML tools will transform the assessment of sewer pipeline conditions, leading to huge cost and efficiency savings and productivity gains. In today's environment of digital project delivery, many opportunities exist for enhancing current project delivery processes from design to construction. This sharing session will build upon last year's tech talk: "Bridging Innovative Opportunities for Digital Project Delivery." It will touch upon the innovative initiative of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)—the Project Delivery Collaboration Center (PDCC)—which had a soft rollout in Spring 2024. The PDCC is meant to be a one-stop shop or hub for project managers. The initial rollout familiarized teams with the backbone of the solution, Autodesk Construction Cloud. As the PDCC continues to develop and evolve, integrations with department systems and other off-the-shelf solutions will be implemented. A few key integrations in development are with Asta Powerproject Vision, Bentley Systems' ProjectWise, Sitelink, and Voyager. Behind the scenes, the PDCC is not one solution; but to the end user, the intent is that it appears as one.

In updating the Master Drainage Plan for Brookings, South Dakota, ISG faced challenges reconciling flood risk maps with community experiences. Despite a doubling of the flood-risk area, doubts arose due to discrepancies with historical records and incomplete evaluations of existing flood-reduction efforts. Using InfoWorks ICM software, ISG employed advanced modeling techniques to generate a more accurate flood map, enabling prioritization of mitigation projects. Stakeholder engagement ensured realistic modeling, leading to actionable results and strategies for water quality improvement.
