This course will cover one main overarching subject: Why is it so necessary for education and industry to maintain a constant connection with one another? We will take a deeper dive into educational institutions that are still training students in ways that are no longer relevant, and we’ll look at how drastically this practice affects a student’s career progression using data captured by the advanced manufacturing team at Danville Community College. In parallel to this, we’ll discuss how an earlier introduction to advanced manufacturing can affect a college graduate’s impact on industry, as well as the advancement that can be made in two-year institution curriculum. Last, we will not only discuss the need for long-term, sustainable, skilled workforce pipelines, but also the need for short-term, accelerated training for veterans and/or incumbent workers.

Key to the successful implementation of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning is the development and implementation of innovative strategies that will support students in thinking across disciplines. This class highlights how the “design thinking” process, a methodology that has been successfully applied in business and multiple fields of design, can serve as a powerful tool for operationalizing STEAM learning in secondary education by promoting 21st-century skills related to creativity, critical analysis, collaboration, communication, and content mastery. The class will draw connections between design thinking and new research in the area of cognition and learning that challenge traditional educational policies and practices. Examples from the Digital STEAM workshop will be used to illustrate the potential of technology enhanced design thinking to support the successful integration of STEAM learning in secondary education.

In this keynote session, we will be joined by several speakers who will challenge our perceptions of education today and instill optimism for the future of education. Speakers come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but each has established a reputation as a leader and change agent in education: Sugata Mitra is a Professor of Educational Technology at the School of Education, Communication, and Language Sciences, Newcastle University, UK.; Cathy Davidson has served as the Ruth F. DeVarney Professor of English at Duke University since 1996, and is the co-founder of HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Sciences and Technology Advanced Collaboratory); and Katie Salen is Professor of Design and Technology, and director of the Center for Transformative Media at Parsons the New School for Design and the executive director of the Institute of Play. We will discuss how students learn today and the changes we are seeing in education as a result. We will hear about smart educators and organizations that are adapting their approaches in the classroom, with some paths less conventional than others. Also, we will discuss the skills that students will need in the 21st-century workplace and how we can best prepare them for successful and rewarding careers. TU Dublin’s Multidisciplinary Collaborative BIM Postgraduate Project forms part of a wider MSc in applied building information modeling and management. The participants in this project come predominately from architecture, architectural technology, construction management, quantity surveying, and structural and building services engineering backgrounds with from 2 to 25 years of experience. The stipulated use of BIM 360 software within the EIR was used firstly as a common data environment (CDE) for each design/client team, and also to accommodate cloud collaboration, communication, design, coordination, and clash resolution. The use of RFIs, submittals, reviews, and activity tracking further enabled the platform to be used as an educational tool to provide real-time feedback, comments, and markups on documents, models, and concepts. Following the review process, every file was further assigned a quality status (approved, approved with comments, or rejected, and so on).

University College London (UCL) Mechanical Engineering faces the challenge of teaching 200+ new students each year—95% of whom have never used a CAD package before.
