There are many unique aspects to designing and building a proton treatment facility. As an emerging type of treatment for cancer, proton centers present challenges that are not like any other healthcare project. With the complexity of the systems that support this new type of treatment, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a crucial role in the development of these types of projects. In this class you will explore how the use of BIM throughout design and construction impacted the development of 2 different yet very similar proton facilities. With a unique opportunity of a consistent team but different workflows, you will experience the power that BIM presents when applied as not just an authoring tool, but also as a pathway for collaboration.

Laser scanning has become a very prevalent topic in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry over the last several years. While the software and hardware has dramatically improved over the years, offsetting or justifying the costs can be a challenge. Rather the project is driven by schedule or cost constraints. What have been the challenges involved in overcoming these hurdles and recouping the benefits that scanning has to offer? This class will take a transparent look at the purchase and use of Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC's, first laser scanner. We will explore the additional challenges as well as the metrics used to prove value. This class is geared toward those considering the purchase of, or who have just recently purchased, their first scanner or who want to learn more about the technology.

This class will cover using Autodesk, Inc.’s, cloud-based applications to encourage trade partner collaboration on construction projects. We will cover using BIM 360 Glue software for designer coordination and collaboration, as well as trade partners. We will demonstrate generating equipment sets in BIM 360 Glue software to be shared to BIM 360 Field software. The geometry for these equipment sets is 3D text in the Revit software file; these equipment sets are then mapped in BIM 360 Field software to room numbers, bar codes are assigned to the room numbers, and printed bar codes are adhered to the doorframes in the field. This enables our trade partners to simply scan the bar code, which then takes them to the room location. They can then utilize the “show model” tab to quickly get to the same spot in the model. We will also demonstrate how you can use the equipment set in the quality process and the punch-list process through the use of checklists, issues, attachments, and tasks.

You will learn how to add control points for aligning model data in the office and in the field; add points to Revit families and other components; and sort, filter, and edit points. You will learn how to prepare data for the field inside of Revit software so that data flows efficiently into the Leica MicroSurvey Layout field software that controls the Leica iCON robot. You will also learn how to add as-built points and bring them back into Revit software to assess deviations in the field.

In this journey, we established secured remote work infrastructure, centralized cloud-based design tools & data. As the owner of the construction project, we made a significant decision to adopt a CDE (Common Data Environment) to create, manage and operate secured construction project. Through Autodesk Forma, we successfully achieved flexibility of workforce management, accessibility of centralized data and cost reduction of IT security & operation. From the perspective of the owner, digital transformation of semiconductor Fab construction through cloud adoption provides big value to our business with a variety of web-based work environments that cannot be applied in traditional closed on-premise environment.
