There are many unique aspects to designing and building a proton treatment facility. As an emerging type of treatment for cancer, proton centers present challenges that are not like any other healthcare project. With the complexity of the systems that support this new type of treatment, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a crucial role in the development of these types of projects. In this class you will explore how the use of BIM throughout design and construction impacted the development of 2 different yet very similar proton facilities. With a unique opportunity of a consistent team but different workflows, you will experience the power that BIM presents when applied as not just an authoring tool, but also as a pathway for collaboration.

Laser scanning has become a very prevalent topic in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry over the last several years. While the software and hardware has dramatically improved over the years, offsetting or justifying the costs can be a challenge. Rather the project is driven by schedule or cost constraints. What have been the challenges involved in overcoming these hurdles and recouping the benefits that scanning has to offer? This class will take a transparent look at the purchase and use of Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC's, first laser scanner. We will explore the additional challenges as well as the metrics used to prove value. This class is geared toward those considering the purchase of, or who have just recently purchased, their first scanner or who want to learn more about the technology.

This class will cover using Autodesk, Inc.’s, cloud-based applications to encourage trade partner collaboration on construction projects. We will cover using BIM 360 Glue software for designer coordination and collaboration, as well as trade partners. We will demonstrate generating equipment sets in BIM 360 Glue software to be shared to BIM 360 Field software. The geometry for these equipment sets is 3D text in the Revit software file; these equipment sets are then mapped in BIM 360 Field software to room numbers, bar codes are assigned to the room numbers, and printed bar codes are adhered to the doorframes in the field. This enables our trade partners to simply scan the bar code, which then takes them to the room location. They can then utilize the “show model” tab to quickly get to the same spot in the model. We will also demonstrate how you can use the equipment set in the quality process and the punch-list process through the use of checklists, issues, attachments, and tasks.

You will also learn how to add as-built points and bring them back into Revit software to assess deviations in the field.

The obvious answer is as-built verification of existing spaces. But is there something more that you can use it for? This class will focus on strategies using already existing tools within the Autodesk, Inc., product line that go beyond just as-builts. We will discuss examples of lessons learned and successes from integrating reality capture workflows when assisting new construction and renovations projects. During recent years computing technology has moved quickly from desktop computers to mobile devices and cloud computing. Such a technology shift provides both CAE vendors and enterprise users with large challenges and large opportunities. In the first part of the lecture we will present Bayer AG's vision for the application of these technologies. What advantages does a global chemical enterprise like Bayer experience, what technological requirements does such an enterprise have, and which challenges does it face? In the second part of the class the Bayer vision is compared to the view of Autodesk, Inc., as an innovative CAE software provider. Cloud and mobile computing—just a vision 5 years ago—is now reality in a variety of released cloud and mobile apps. How does this technology match the needs of industry? How is it accepted, and will it indeed induce major changes in the ways that CAE is applied in a chemical enterprise like Bayer? We will provide a snapshot of an interesting interaction between industry vision and software vendors' visions.
