Can you handle the pressure of inventing for civil? This is a down-and-dirty course in Inventor software and Inventor LT software for civil engineers, civil designers, and civil CAD managers. We'll cover the skills needed in Inventor software to create parts and assemblies specifically for infrastructure projects. We'll then add those parts to Parts Editor and export them to gravity or pressure networks in both AutoCAD Civil 3D software and InfraWorks software. During the class, we'll design a curb inlet in 3 parts, import it into Parts Editor, and place it into an assembly. From the assemblies and families in Parts Editor, we'll create an AutoCAD Civil 3D Parts catalog. Lastly, we'll import the new catalog into AutoCAD Civil 3D and apply the new part to a storm drainage system. As a bonus, we'll repeat all these steps and show you how to import the new part into InfraWorks and apply it to a storm drainage system there. If the gravity of your infrastructure designs is serious enough that you need to reinvent parts, this class is for you!

The cities of Fargo, ND, and Moorhead, MN, are divided by the Red River of the North because of major yearly flooding. To address this, a new six-mile earthen levee system that includes five separate interior drainage systems, five 100-year regional storm water retention basins, and five 5,000 GPM storm water pumping stations was designed. Due to the large scale of project and the issues that arose, Ulteig Engineers asked for the assistance of their current reseller, Managed Design. The issues pertaining to this project were file size, slow drawings, and issues around being able to have more team members help with the project. Managed Design was hired to come in during the project to help identify bottlenecks in the process. What will be shown and discussed are the results and the final product of implementing both composite surfaces and data shortcuts into their design process. You will be able to ask your questions to both the prime civil tech designer on the project and the corresponding application engineer from Managed Design.

InfoWorks ICM assists engineers and designers in understanding the impacts projects have on the environment. Extreme events continue to stress local and regional civil infrastructure, and our tools and techniques must change as we design projects in our communities. InfoWorks ICM enables team collaboration and empowers engineers to reach beyond single-purpose tools to evaluate various options against a multitude of rainfall events within the context of the entire watershed. This technical instruction class will help users through a number of considerations to preserve Civil 3D designs in evaluation of possible flood damages across the wide range of flood scenarios.

The presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of effective practices regarding how to combine foundation designs in Revit Structure Suite software with civil-site designers in AutoCAD Civil 3D software to ultimately collaborate with architects in Revit Architecture software. The discussion will give guidelines on where utility modeling for building should transition from Revit MEP software above grade to AutoCAD Civil 3D software below grade and how to use Navisworks project review software in this review process. Key concept to review will be the difference between local coordinate systems that building designers work in as compared to the state plane coordinate system that civil engineers typically use. The discussion will then consider the new American Institute of Architects' BIM Protocol Exhibit E202 that defines the Level Of Detail (LOD) in models on a scale of 100 to 500. The presenter will demonstrate these LOD concepts with case studies from projects in 3 different project phases: design, construction, and facilities management.

Before ground survey is available, you can retrieve surface data, political boundaries, roadways, and water feature information directly from GIS and reference it into AutoCAD Civil 3D software. When the preliminary design is complete and the ground survey and other data becomes available, you can move straight into production by swapping out the GIS data and using the design information generated in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Complete the "round trip" by exporting design and record data from AutoCAD Civil 3D software back into GIS, making it available for the next project.

Although InfraWorks software was created for designers and civil engineers to plan and design infrastructure projects in the context of the real world, it is useful as a site logistics planning tool. This class will cover workflows on how to use InfraWorks 360 software to create professional 3D site logistics plans. We will use InfraWorks 360 software’s model builder to create the site background, use ReCap Photo software to import a 3D model created from site photos, use Bluebeam to create annotated terrain overlays, and show how to import 3D models from several sources such as SketchUp and Revit software to create equipment libraries. We will use the proposals tab to model the different phases of construction, enabling phased site logistics. And we will review how to use coverage areas to model excavation in the 3D terrain. We will also show how to export professional graphics using the storyboard, and we will discuss how to import these models for use in virtual reality.

But what we're talking about is architects and civil engineers playing together, specifically when it comes to coordinating Revit and AutoCAD Civil 3D data on the same project. This class is directed at both Revit and Civil 3D software users. That's right, architects and civil engineers in the same room. We work in both Revit and Civil 3D, showing you proper importing and exporting of data, so it lands in the correct place automatically. We teach you how to ask for the correct data, as well as a good understanding of one another's software. We cover how to create good topo in Revit, and how that compares to topos in Civil 3D. In this class you will learn how to capitalize on scan data collected from a scanner to help validate existing-conditions data and provide the basis for your design process. Incorporating scan technology and total station, see how the raw scan data is registered in ReCap software utilizing geolocation control points from the field. We will then evaluate the data and prep it to be passed up to InfraWorks 360 software for further analysis, such as placement of roads, bridges, and surfaces. After completing the analysis, see how you can extract actual design data from the InfraWorks software model to further the design process within AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Finally, see how designers and engineers can begin to capitalize on this data for surfaces, alignments, and site planning.

In this class we will discuss the use of intelligent and informative design applications and 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) in a multiple-discipline project environment. These methods enable the rapid creation of project reports, bills of material, and additional supporting project documentation for both design review and procurement support. Discussion topics include the collaboration capabilities and conflicts between AutoCAD P&ID software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, Revit software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, and Navisworks project review software. We will also cover referencing models from various design software, export and import methods, and real-time design review. These capabilities are not only beneficial to engineers and designers, but they also provide substantial benefit to the client, the contractors and the construction managers. We will look at the limitations and advantages to working in a multiple-discipline, real-time environment, and we will touch on some of the most effective practices and work-arounds.
