In this session, we'll explore how building information modeling (BIM) automation techniques have been used to create 15,000+ generative designs for critical water and power infrastructure projects using Revit software. You will learn which tools are available for design automation efforts, including generative algorithms and artificial intelligence, and how these techniques plus Revit are helping owners and engineers automatically assess the most climate-resilient infrastructure options in the preliminary design phase of projects. We'll showcase specific examples of how Revit is being used to serve underrepresented communities in Brazil that are most impacted by climate change—focusing on the automatic generation of embedded carbon calculation documentation, CAPEX/OPEX tables, 3D models, and more, for wastewater treatment plants and electrical substations.

Managing construction progress and safety is a visual process. How could Skanska leverage advances in artificial intelligence to save time and reduce jobsite risk on top of Autodesk’s BIM 360 platform? Skanska worked with Autodesk partner Smartvid.io to apply two kinds of machine learning to the challenges of progress documentation and Safety Risk reduction. Automated statistics were generated based on the detection of these risk factors in photos from Autodesk BIM 360 and used to benchmark project risks over time. For progress tracking, machine learning was used to analyze narrated jobsite walks and automatically generate searchable progress documentation. Photos from BIM 360 were indexed automatically, eliminating time spent on finding relevant photos and improving jobsite risk analysis. Managers could use search and collaboration features to find photos and videos by relevant tags, and share dynamic links to access them with both internal and external team members.

Much has been made of the existential threat AI poses to many professions. However, due to the complex nature of architectural projects, we need not fear losing our design agency (or employment) to an AI architect. While there's work over which architects want and need to maintain control, there's also plenty of work that architects would gladly hand over to an AI bot. Using AI allows architects to focus on meaningful design work, rather than tedious minutiae. Also, by passing off more-menial tasks to AI, junior staff can be empowered to get more-meaningful experience. This will be demonstrated through practical examples of how AI is integrated into multiple workflows and processes at ZGF Architects, including project benchmarking, Revit automation/standardization, and semantic search of code documents.

Will Plato, VDC Manager at Hensel Phelps, and Christian Claus, CMO and Head of Partnerships at HoloBuilder, will introduce and discuss his innovative use of construction technologies and co-developing Reality Capture, Computer Vision, AI technologies, and cross product integrations. Hensel Phelps has partnered with HoloBuilder to further develop their 360° photo documentation platform and solve immediate needs on projects throughout the Southwest region and beyond. Will’s and Christian’s presentation will outline how Hensel Phelps has leveraged technology to secure ROI and gain a competitive advantage. New developments that have been co-developed will be presented for the first time.

The built environment is fundamentally changing, empowered by innovation in virtual design and construction (VDC). The result is more-complex and increasingly elegant designs, as well as streamlined procurement and construction methods. This panel includes academic and industry leaders responsible for developing and implementing new VDC technology, including Hilda Espinal of CannonDesign, Ricardo Khan of Mortenson Construction, Forest Flager of Stanford University, and Danielle Dy Buncio of VIATechnik. The panel will discuss advancements seen on past and current industry projects in the areas of prefabrication, artificial intelligence, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, and multidisciplinary design optimization. Panelists will use multimedia presentations and demonstrations to communicate the material to attendees to facilitate thoughtful and interactive discussion.
