In this workshop, attendees will learn about the advantages of using and preparing BIM (Building Information Modeling) models (Revit software, ArchiCAD, Bentley), and then we’ll import the models into BPS (Building Performance Simulation) software (BIM 360 Insight software, Ecotect, Green Building Studio, Radiance, Design Builder, and so on) in an interesting and exciting practical session.

Sustainable, low-carbon buildings play a pivotal role in environmental sustainability and economic decarbonization. In this session, we'll discuss how CPAC Green Construction and Autodesk initiated a design competition in Thailand to spur the next generation's interest in creating low-carbon, net-zero buildings. This competition uniquely pairs young architects with engineering students early in the design stage to promote systems thinking right from the conceptual stage. We provide these students with Autodesk Forma, Revit software, KIT CARBON (embodied carbon calculator software), and comprehensive online training, empowering them to shape sustainable, low-carbon buildings. Through the collaborative efforts of various associations and industry partners, the competition was a great success, attracting 88 teams from 12 universities.

As architects and designers we are always looking for more advanced ways to share and explore our designs with the client. With the introduction of gaming engines into the architecture industry it has allowed architects more flexibility in how they design and create a more unified collaborative approach with the client. The success of adopting gaming engines into the industry relies heavily on adoption of the software in an already challenging design workflow, from allowing for maximum adaptability as the design changes to creating an optimized experience within the software for client integration and understanding. In this class we will look at CallisonRTKL as a case study, in how we have approached the software and identified the key challenges that are faced in the industry across multiple disciplines, from hospitality, urban planning and Retail, how to overcome them, and how to create seamless integration from BIM models to Unreal for maximum flexibility for the design team.

Teaching Tectonism to AI"" is an exploration that focusses on the convergence of AI and tectonism. Tectonism, as a leading subsidiary style of parametricism, poses a unique challenge for current text-to-image AI tools due to their limited comprehension of structural dependencies in architectural representations. The presentation will showcase the potential of merging structural topology generation tools with Generative Artificial Intelligence across various architectural typologies and how this is integrated into early stage ideations at Zaha Hadid Architects.

This class will explore and question the standard forms of communication between architects, construction managers, and builders in various parts of the world. In some cultures, hiring an architect, designer, and/or construction manager is not a standard practice or form of service. Architectural drawings can be misleading and hard to understand to someone with limited education and background in the construction industry. The African Design Centre Fellows, together with MASS Design Group and Autodesk Foundation volunteers, workshopped and developed new drawing techniques and standards that can be applied in other contexts to break down the communication barrier between architects, builders, and foremen on construction sites in Rwanda. Using the Autodesk Foundation's Volunteer Rwanda Trip in October 2016 as a case study, the session will discuss the lessons learned and applied during workshops with builders and foremen to help architects and designers communicate more effectively.

This class will cover how you can use several autodesk software including revit, 3ds max, navisworks and InfraWorks for use in Autodesks Revit live and Stingray (3ds Max Interactive).

This will include the basics on how to get started, and best settings for a VR experience including lighting, materials and cameras.

There will also be workflows on how best to get authoring data intoStingray (3ds Max Interactive) how to work with templates and have live links back to the authoring software for design changes.

The class will cover a section on vray materials and how they work with Stingray (3ds Max Interactive) and how to get photorealistic VR environments with core settings, light probes, and light baking.

The architecture field depends a lot on creativity—making a building out of initially tiny ideas. For this we have architects. While the tools of architecture have changed a lot over the years, architects surprisingly seldom have. Will they survive the digital transformation if just the mention of artificial intelligence elicits frowns? Implementing software in a field where almost no one is interested in it is like educating people about driving when they hate cars. To make this easier, not only for them and for us, but also for the technology providers, we want to talk about why they dislike the technology so much, and how to work around that. We believe that the way to both better software and better houses comes from better relations—and this class will be a crash course in how to achieve those relations.

Animations typically have a polished and time-intensive connotation. However, increases in computing power and program interoperability have begun to bend this notion. This class will focus on the benefits of quick animations—animations that help designers form, shape, understand, and present a design. We will explore the methods that are required to take Autodesk® Revit® software models and move them into Autodesk® 3ds Max® software in ways that allow designers to make active design decisions. We will show quick, functional animation workflows, covering a variety of topics, including solar glare, form, constructability, programming, scheduling, and more through animation. This class hopes to show that designers can effectively study and explain their designs through fast-production animations. We will show start-to-finish methods through case studies.

This class is a case study on the integration of Revit by a small to mid-sized engineering firm working in building construction. The class will explore the implementation of Revit by delving into a few BIM projects. The study will show that Revit is not restricted to large projects; rather it is well suited to the “everyday” buildings, such as housing, schools, offices, and more. The focus is on experiences the firm had along the way from CAD to BIM such as detailing, coordination, and standardization. Those experiences are lessons that will increase any firm’s proficiency using Revit without sacrificing production. The class will also show the collaboration between architectural and engineering companies on multi-disciplinary Revit projects. In the end, we hope to show architects and engineers of any sized company for any sized project how to integrate Revit into project delivery and how new technologies such as Autodesk A360 will further increase the efficiency of the BIM.

It’s early in the design process. Wouldn’t it be great if there was something that evaluated the benefit of adding insulation, the impact of installing heftier glazing, or the increased efficiency in rotating your building 10 degrees? Architects don’t want to get into energy “modeling.” That’s not their gig. Let's leave that to the MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) professionals. Early energy analysis is the way to go, and tools within Revit software are available to help guide the process. In this session, we will investigate the tools available, including Insight 360 software, and the benefits of running energy analysis early in project design. We’ll discuss the fine line between energy “modeling” and energy “analysis,” as well as workflow implementation and documentation. This session features Revit. AIA Approved

Teaching structural design to architecture students is a bit like teaching a bowling ball to float. Both design students and bowling balls require a change in their core states to be successful in their relative tasks. Visual thinkers, like most architects, struggle with the analysis and calculation process of structural design. As a result, they rarely gain comfort with the iterative requirements of designing compelling structures that are additive to design expressions. By introducing architecture students to structural simulation in Autodesk® Revit® software, the learning process is modified to work with visual thinkers—developing a stronger connection to the design process and improved direct feedback (visual in nature) to the ramifications and potentials of design decisions. This class will outline the opportunities and pedagogy of structural simulation as a predesign effort and design development strategy in the architectural education studio course.

This case study session will explore the benefits of using Autodesk Takeoff software to use quantification data as a design tool throughout the building design process. As architects, we often overlook the importance of quantification and cost during the early phases of design, typically generating an unwelcome dose of reality downstream, leading to rework and intensive design changes. What if we could predict with greater fidelity and confidence the cost of our design in near real time, as we're designing and progressing Revit models. This was exactly our goal with implementing Takeoff. Reviewing case study projects, we'll demonstrate how we were able to bridge the gap between design intent and project budgets—thus, allowing 3D quantification through Takeoff to guide decision making during design, promote model quality throughout production, and rally project stakeholders around the same data within a collaborative Autodesk Construction Cloud environment.
