This class discusses the results of an Advanced Infrastructure Analysis Technology assessment recently conducted by Autodesk Consulting for a major electric and gas utility that has over 15 million customers. A key focus of the engagement was the evaluation of emerging mobile and visualization technologies of potential benefit to the client's gas transmission and distribution network operations for both the short-term and long-term replacement of current mobile solutions. In this class, we demonstrate a number of Autodesk products, including InfraWorks civil infrastructure design software, ReCap™ reality capture software, and Autodesk® PLM 360 cloud-based product lifecycle management software. We highlight current advances in emerging technologies, including reality capture and augmented reality. We discuss the business requirements that were identified, the current limitations and advantages of each solution, and the final short-term and long-term recommendations that were presented.

Working with data sets between single-precision, non-geospatially aware applications (such as 3ds Max software, Revit software, and Inventor software) and double-precision, geospatially aware applications (like AutoCAD software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, InfraWorks software, ReCap software, and Navisworks software) can be difficult and frustrating. Procedural techniques for embellishing designs with entourage can save you time by enabling you to more quickly experiment and iterate on your visualization. In this session you will learn new tools and techniques for creating and placing content procedurally in 3ds Max 2016 software. We will present a free set of procedural tools created using the Max Creation Graph editor in 3ds Max software. You will learn how we created these tools using Max Creation Graph and how you can modify them using the Max Creation Graph node editor to address your custom visualization needs. 3ds Max software is extremely powerful and versatile. However, because it is used by so many different disciplines and supports such a wide variety of workflows, new and infrequent users can quickly become overwhelmed with the multitude of options and settings that are presented to them. The key to being a successful casual user of 3ds Max software is to focus solely on those aspects of the software that lend themselves to your specific workflow. This class will focus on the specific workflow of using 3ds Max software to generate high-quality still images and animations of building models created in Revit software. We will look at file linking and importing options, overview materials, and compare the new Raytracer Renderer (ART) with the mental ray rendering engine, and we’ll look at global illumination and photometric lighting, rendering output, keyframe animation, and the use of video post to combine animation sequences. This presentation will take you on a journey through the design process in large railroad projects to show what we're doing and how we're pushing things further with the help of InfraWorks software and Unreal Engine. We will cover collaboration and live feed, involving the information flow and efficient collaboration between hundreds of people per project. We'll also cover concurrent engineering and model utilization to the full extent with virtual reality (VR) enabled by Unreal Engine. This is project delivery reinvented. Back by popular demand—and intended for emerging users of 3ds Max software and Maya software—this session will explore the world of image-based lighting for rendering images using high dynamic range (HDR) maps and the mental ray, NVIDIA iray, and V-Ray rendering engines. We'll begin with the process of capturing the existing real-world environment lighting. From there we'll see the steps involved in creating HDR panoramic image maps that are used within 3ds Max software and Maya software for photorealistic scene lighting. Finally, we'll employ camera techniques to create very real images, and we'll combine computer graphics and real photographs for completely believable and realistic final imagery.

This case study of the Alamo Master Plan in San Antonio, Texas, reviews the use of LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and photogrammetry in the creation of a computer model. The model was used for both documentation in Revit software and visualization in 3ds Max software, and it documented 3 square kilometers of dense urban environment in less than 6 weeks. We'll review the hardware and how we used multiple Autodesk software packages such as ReCap software, Revit, and 3ds Max to develop a computer model for both master planning and visualization.

Although InfraWorks software was created for designers and civil engineers to plan and design infrastructure projects in the context of the real world, it is useful as a site logistics planning tool. This class will cover workflows on how to use InfraWorks 360 software to create professional 3D site logistics plans. We will use InfraWorks 360 software’s model builder to create the site background, use ReCap Photo software to import a 3D model created from site photos, use Bluebeam to create annotated terrain overlays, and show how to import 3D models from several sources such as SketchUp and Revit software to create equipment libraries. We will use the proposals tab to model the different phases of construction, enabling phased site logistics. And we will review how to use coverage areas to model excavation in the 3D terrain. We will also show how to export professional graphics using the storyboard, and we will discuss how to import these models for use in virtual reality.

Autodesk Research's Project Dasher is a building performance management tool that displays historical and real-time sensor data inside a building model. In this session, we'll take a close look at how Forge software was used to implement a Dasher 360 project, leading to a multi-year desktop development project being largely re-created for the web in a matter of months. We'll pay particular attention to the techniques used to contextualize sensor data within intelligent models displayed via the web, explaining the implementation details of reusable Forge Viewer extensions created using JavaScript application programming interface and TypeScript.

In this instructional demo - we will use Autodesk Recap to create a 3d model from a series of photographs, Autodesk Maya to re-topologies that model and generate a UV Map to then use NOTCH VFX to generate real-time content and Disguise to remap that video content back onto the original object using digital projectors. The demonstration object will be chosen as relevant to an industrial design or fabrication process to also show how this technique can be used in creative fabrication. This demonstration will last approx 1 hour.

Scanners and cameras are becoming ubiquitous and they enable us to digitize the world around us. Creating useful and meaningful 3D models from reality, however, is quite a challenging and tedious process that is slow and requires expertise and use of multiple and expensive solutions. This class will cover how we used InfraWorks software in conjunction with AutoCAD Civil 3D software, ReCap software, and Inventor software to carry out the concept design for an innovative new transportation system in the United Arab Emirates. You will learn how we used reality capture methods such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to produce digital terrain and surface models from photos, and how we mapped the existing road layout and topography using laser scans as well as ground-penetrating radar for underground utilities to construct a digital model of the proposed system alignment in InfraWorks. It will also cover how the information was brought in using other Autodesk products, such as ReCap for the point cloud capture, AutoCAD Civil 3D for the utilities, and Inventor to create parametric bridge objects for use in InfraWorks as the unique support structure for the transportation system. Also, we'll demonstrate how we were able to bring all the above together to provide the client with the assurance that the system would work and fit the site aesthetics with confidence.
