As an experienced educator who has trained many people live and online, I find the rendering world is full of technical information. The technical layer has been covered extensively and many learning options are available, but what’s missing is the building and educating of the abstraction layer. This knowledge is fundamental, but many times we think it’s only applicable to talented people. As visualization artists, we should know much more about photography—specifically, composition, lighting, and color theory. A better understanding of this fundamental abstraction layer will facilitate a better understanding of the technical side of visualization. There’s a great deal to learn about lighting before realizing the promise of a compelling photograph—recreating the illusion of the tridimensionality. If you are new to Revit Architecture software and want to get a quick hands-on overview of the recommended practices for using BIM in architecture and its associated workflows, then this is the class for you. We highlight several workflows, including conceptual design, documentation, visualization, and multidiscipline coordination. These workflows highlight the capabilities of Revit Architecture, and touch on some of the BIM 360™ cloud-based offerings as well. In this hands-on lab, you walk through exercises that highlight each of the major phases of design, with an emphasis on recommended workflow, while simultaneously incorporating features that are new to Revit Architecture 2014.

Construction site layout plans are integral to Construction management and involve placing and sizing site equipment and temporary structures.

While Infraworks supports 3D objects, there is no support for generic parametric 3D objects. This meant NCC had to model separate objects for each variation of size which is impractical. NCC worked with Autodesk on a solution that provides parametric objects, modelled in Inventor and resizable in Infraworks.

The new workflow reduces NCC process times by about 15%, but more importantly, it offers several new tools to create 3D models using a variety of 2D/3D data and to visualise, simulate, communicate and gather comments.It shows existing conditions to visualise complexity during site layout planning.It also provides a simple interface and easy access to predefined objects, which is crucial for implementing this solution across NCC.

As Project Integrator on the B2 Modular Housing Project at Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, New York, SHoP Construction (SC) is currently implementing the Autodesk BIM 360 Glue™ cloud-based management solution to provide comprehensive collaboration across the project team and model supply chain. Starting in 2010 on the Barclays Center Arena in Brooklyn, NY, SHoP Construction prototyped a web-based portal that enabled project stakeholders to track the fabrication and installation progress of 12,000 uniquely sized weathered steel panels for the facade. The constantly updated SC 4D sequencing model evolved into a critical tool for the design-build team to understand the impact of production and schedule changes. This class will focus on how Autodesk BIM 360 services and web-based portals enable improved project visualization and information access for all project stakeholders. The class will demonstrate how to move from linear workflows to real-time collaboration with hyperlinks to access live data. We will highlight how the project team is using Autodesk BIM 360 to streamline the team’s transition from design development through to the factory production phase of the work for the largest prefab modular building in the world

On April 27, 2017, the new extension for Oslo Gardermoen Airport in Norway opened its doors, increasing its capacity from 19 million passengers to 30 million. The project was delivered on time and on budget, with practically no errors during design or construction. The terminal has received a BREEAM Excellent certification, using many innovative solutions, making it the world's greenest airport. While we are waiting for electric airplanes, we'll show how the terminal building is ready for the future, drastically reducing energy consumption. The class will also focus on how we managed to pull off this massive project through the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). What were the key factors in the project's success? We'll discuss project organization and communication through visualization, BIM quality assessment through new tools and workflows developed for Revit software, and how Navisworks software helped us combine what may very well be the world's largest BIM model.

This interactive class will demonstrate the importance of the discovery process at the beginning of any visualization or video project. After an introduction to the key elements of the discovery phase, the class attendees will collaborate to develop a set of questions to ask during discovery that will achieve the best results and reveal the single most important message to tell. Working in small groups, the class will then compete with each other to find the most compelling story in several scenarios based on typical client requests.

These days, the commonplace use of visual effects (VFX) in movies has raised audience expectations in terms of VFX quality, and has driven television productions to step up both the quantity and quality of VFX for almost every scripted television series. Due to the nature of television schedules and budgets, VFX artists share more in common than just similar toolsets with their colleagues in the architectural visualization industry; hence, efficient workflows in one field can be modified to benefit the other. Kim Lee (senior CG generalist from FuseFX New York) will present various case studies from a variety of current television series, showing how tools like 3ds Max software are used to create high-quality VFX, quickly and efficiently. Lee will show how the artists at FuseFX capitalize on capabilities like photogrammetry scanning, and MAXScript and python scripting—along with various 3ds Max software tools and plug-ins—to create award-winning VFX for many of the most popular shows. This session features 3ds Max.

This class describes how Camargo Corrêa Infra, one of the largest Brazilian construction companies, integrated its BIM 360 hub to Microsoft Power BI, through Forge APIs, to create dynamic graphs to monitor field information (issues and checklists). The traditional process uses paper-based forms to register the checklists and issues, which are later digitized into spreadsheets so the necessary analysis can run. With the use of BIM 360 software, despite the digitalization happening on the source input, the data visualization doesn’t meet the requirements of all the stakeholders. On this scenario, we’ve developed an integration of BIM 360 with Power BI for the creation of dynamic customizable dashboards, getting real-time BIM 360 data from the field to the office. The class will approach the system architecture necessary for this integration, and useful tips and tools to better understand and visualize data from BIM 360, even for people who aren’t programmers.

Inspired by the gaming industry, Royal HaskoningDHV introduced augmented reality (AR) to engineering consultancy by bringing to life the firm’s projects through Microsoft HoloLens showcases. An early example is Heerlen Railway Station (see https://bit.ly/2xySKFw). Aspiring to stay at the forefront of digital engineering, we since developed various AR applications to let both engineering consultants and relevant stakeholders truly interact with holograms. Highlights include shared-view solutions to work from different locations, holographic libraries from which to select objects and solutions, and synchronization solutions to push designs back to Revit software. Our industry talk will aim to provide an inspiring vision on the digital future of architecture, engineering, and construction; the role of AR in realizing digital twins; and valuable lessons from our AR applications development agenda.

This class will demonstrate how AECOM Hunt used BIM 360 Field software and BIM 360 Glue software during the construction of the Cleburne Railroaders baseball stadium, a minor league stadium that holds 10,000 seats. In addition to all the buildings, the railcars were custom made for the team. BIM 360 Glue and BIM 360 Field let us work with a rookie subcontractor base that wasn't versed in tools like Revit software-and they also saved us the expense of purchasing extra Navisworks licenses. In this class, you'll learn to cover the bases and discover the process of transforming team members with zero Building Information Modeling (BIM) knowledge into BIM all-stars on a stadium project. You will not strike out when it comes to learning how to deal with a limited subcontractor base-you'll hit home runs with a complete process of coordination, including using drones, 360 cameras, and virtual reality for coordination. Additionally, this class will look into linking BIM 360 Glue to BIM 360 Field to complete a grand slam.

Highways England have defined a framework for delivering asset information on their Smart motorways program corresponding with BIM practices. To deliver this, the process of tagging data consistently with several applications presented CH2M with a time-consuming challenge. Working with Autodesk to develop a Model Development Manager solution, CH2M now has information integrity with a single data source derived from geometry models and an associated database working in Civil 3D. This saves them a significant number of hours in creating and maintaining information models when geometry changes across platforms. It’s hard to escape the influence of visual effects in today’s media, and today’s top visualization shops are blurring the lines between feature film / television work and traditional architectural visualization (arch viz) work. Considering the common toolset used in both fields, it can be advantageous for visualization artists working in the architecture, engineering, and construction market to employ workflows developed in the entertainment field—not only from an efficiency standpoint, but also potentially from an aesthetic standpoint. Employing some of the media and entertainment approaches can inject an otherwise unremarkable arch viz animation with more visual interest, leading to investor or sales videos that are more compelling. In this class we will examine some production-tested approaches using both old and new tools in 3ds Max software to create things like large crowds of people and animated foliage, as well as workflows used for working with large scene files.

Today clients expect to be "wowed." This means that you as a designer need to find ways to do more with your work and help your audience or clients better understand your designs and intentions. Generating compelling, interactive 3D in presentations is a way to really engage and help clients and stakeholders visualize spaces and designs, and in turn help you win more work. We'll use real-life project examples to show you how to effectively integrate a workflow that takes advantage of your existing Autodesk® Revit or AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software models to create an interactive walkthrough that is as easy and smooth to navigate as a modern video game and can be used for client, real estate, or town board presentations. We will discuss some of the challenges that designers may encounter when getting started, but how ultimately, anyone can take advantage of technology to produce professional presentations that can help build more business. Learn about available options for gaming engines to get the most value from your project intelligent models.

We will explore the implementation of the scanning process of an entire Mexico City district and the impact that this process represents as a social-decision support tool. Urban planning has a special responsibility to represent societal needs. Using laser scanning technologies with a powerful 3D visualization tool like ReCap software, planners can generate and explain new ideas, and they can get more people involved in the planning phase. Information for urban planning must integrate all possible strategic information coming from different sources. In other words, the information must be accurate and updated and it should represent a high-fidelity 3D model of the city. In addition, when data is coming from different sources, the integration and management of this information plays a vital role for decision-making and urban planning at all levels of the society. In this lecture we will review the advances that laser scanning methods offer in urban planning for a more sustainable built environment.

In this presentation, Skanska USA Building will share one of its approaches for integrating model-based takeoffs in the preconstruction process. We’ll present the workflows and toolsets for using design models in conceptual, schematic, and design development in regards to quantity takeoff. The presentation will highlight benefits of using Assemble for model-based takeoff, as well as the process of extracting quantities, conditioning and validating 3D models, and understanding how the available data can be used and enriched for downstream workflows. We’ll present Skanska workflows and lesson plans and how we’re training our teams on the use of Assemble on a national level. This session will cover lessons learned during implementation and training and best practices identified during the implementation.
