This presentation will focus on how the UA is developing skilled labor by BIM integration into their training to meet the needs of the plumbing, mechanical and fire protection contractors. We will show how we have taken a scan to BIM project and developed additional uses in training including plan reading, safety training, point layout, virtual design and scan to BIM. We will also discuss our recruitment efforts to expand our membership to meet the needs of the construction industry utilizing the latest technology and creating multiple career paths for our members. The UA is excited to bring this presentation to Autodesk University to show how our partnership with Autodesk and many others has expanded our training and uplifted our members and created career paths that are changing the construction industry.

Switzerland has become a forerunner in Digitization in AEC in Europe, within this Industry Talk we will cover the success of BIM in Switzerland and the strategic approach from the Swiss government to invest in innovation and digital construction through realizing a real world modular research building (NEST) with the newest BIM Technologies to accelerate research, best practice as well as start-ups. In this modular research and innovation building, new technologies, materials and systems are tested, researched, honed and validated in realistic conditions. The talk will be presented by inspiring speakers from NEST (owner), ROK Architects (planner) and Mensch und Maschine Schweiz AG (implantation) and Autodesk highlighting best practices on how to implement seamless workflows from laser scanning to design with Revit and BIM 360 Design, construction to Operation using BIM 360.

ReCap Photo is a cloud- connected high performance photogrammetry desktop application that allows digitizing reality using digital cameras.

The application can automatically turn a series of overlapping 2D photos of an object or a scene into a very high resolution and photo realistic textured 3D mesh model.

And it has the capability to process aerial images captured via UAV/Drones to create detailed engineering/survey grade data like mesh models, point clouds and ortho images that are geo-located. It supports features like specifying ground control points and geo-referenced coordinate systems.

With the introduction of the Reality Capture API on Forge, anyone can access the same powerful technology to convert digital images to 3D/2.5D models for various industrial use cases, leveraging cloud computing.

In this class, one will learn how to use the Reality Capture Web API with code samples to add highly-scalable photogrammetry capability to their desktop, web or mobile applications.

Can 2D wiring drawings and 3D mesh models play together? This class will explore the possibilities of using iPhone/iPad Pro LiDAR to create mesh models of substation assets in the field. In this case study, working with a utility customer, we scanned their substation wiring panels with an iPad and iPhone Pro. Next, we created mesh models in a ReCap Photo environment and connected it to its 2D drawings in AutoCAD Electrical software. Finally, we attached it as part of a lifecycle in Vault software. Capturing this data could allow engineers and designers to see the actual wiring in a model with their 2D wiring drawing. This can also allow snapshots of how the rack was wired at that point in time. We’ll go over the process of retrieving the data, the differences in hardware, exploring the advantages and shortcomings of the data retrieved and how we may further the process as the technology improves.

Kinect Fusion allows you to paint in 3D using a Kinect device as a wand, aggregating a point cloud representing a 3D volume (and allowing you to export a mesh of the capture surface). Kinect Fusion started as a UK-based research project between Microsoft Research Cambridge and Imperial College London. It was introduced into the Kinect for Windows® SDK in the 1.7 release, and has the potential to enable low-cost, high-quality reality capture for anyone with a Kinect device. This class looks at a prototype integration of Kinect Fusion inside AutoCAD software, investigating the quality of the results and the potential for further development.
