The Kid Architecture Workshop offered by Professor Jon Davey in Southern Illinois provides young students with a great foundational experience and appreciation for design as a lifelong career. This workshop has been in operation for the past 20 years, providing insights into how students learn about spatial design, building materials, visualization techniques, and using digital technologies to create design solutions. It also provides a solid foundation for students to pursue design or architecture in their post-secondary academic life. The workshop offers valuable data and insights on how learners successfully combine traditional experiential techniques with computer tools when approaching design problem solving. This class will present the Kid Architecture Workshop and will be followed by a panel discussion to find ways of assimilating and applying its findings to other areas of teaching design for a secondary audience.

This class will cover the ins and outs of setting up your fabrication database as it relates to manufacturing, costing, and drafting. Cutting liner? Where are the two places you can control your cutbacks? Do you want stiffener offsets global, or per connector? Would you rather set up effective diameters for every size, or simply utilize the diameter adjust built into round connectors? The software itself has grown over the years, and newer features have been added controlling certain things, but not everything has been removed. Come and join the session to learn the best way to tie everything together!

Stephen Silver was hired by Warner Brothers Television Animation as a character designer and has been working in the animation industry for the past 15 years. He designed hit shows such as Disney's Kim Possible, Nickelodeon's Danny Phantom, and many more. In this class, he will talk about how he launched his career in character designs for animated TV series and share his experiences and view of the industry. Stephen will also discuss the importance of practice, persistence, patience, passion, and concentration. After this class, you will be able to understand how drawing communicates, what steps you should take in order to succeed in the work you do, identify industry standards for artists in the entertainment industry, and discover how to find your true passion.

The intent of this session is to show best practices to implement in your Revit template when dealing with MEP Fabrication projects. These recommendations will help provide better control of your experience with Revit Fabrication Parts during the detailing, documenting, and fabrication phases. Users coming from Fabrication CADmep software and Fabrication ESTmep software will see familiar outputs with these Revit template techniques. You’ll be able to better identify what has been sent out to fabricate and use a better QC process. Not only will there be typical graphical advantages, but also documentation capabilities will be enhanced. We’ll talk about how to best approach projects providing all AutoCAD backgrounds versus Revit backgrounds, all while still utilizing your custom Revit template.

This talk will focus on a case study using a common Fabrication database in Revit software for engineering through a design-build project. With an effort to vertically align engineering, estimating, virtual design and construction (VDC), and manufacturing on a common platform, it was important to use the same common database. It was necessary to determine the hurdles involved in adapting engineering workflows to use Fabrication Parts and how we were able to resolve them. Learn how to determine when it’s best to use Revit families, and when it’s best to convert families to items. This class is not meant to be a definitive explanation of the right methods, but a look at how it has been accomplished.

We offer insights into how certification can be applied throughout the entire educational marketplace, industry, and beyond.

In an early design phase, a parametric Civil 3D model of a tunnel was setup using the subassembly composer. Where Civil 3D is strong in linear oriented design, Revit is strong in placing object-oriented elements. With the CivilConnection package for Dynamo it is possible to setup and change a Revit model based on the corridor and feature lines from the civil 3D model. Where the Civil 3D Model follows the curved alignment as much as possible, it is necessary to work towards a more implementation-ready model in Revit during designing. We constantly look for optimizations. Without computational modeling, quickly processing new design insights is a time-consuming job and no longer of this time.

Creating photorealistic digital assets is key to increasing the realism of today's games and movies today. Could it also be important for decors, natural scenes, samples, faces, bodies, or props? There is a fast-growing demand to bring the as-built or as-existing reality into the production pipeline. Some advanced production houses have embraced reality capture technologies, and they already use photos, videos, or lasers to capture reality. The Autodesk Reality Capture Group has developed tools that make these technologies easier to use. Come and discuss your needs for reality capture, and see how you can benefit by using these new tools to create your own digital assets for use in your own production environment.

Fusion 360 3D CAD/CAM software offers several modeling environments for different types of modeling, from technical details to organic surfaces. This class will explore methods for modeling complex shapes in a simple, efficient, and direct workflow by taking advantage of T-Splines geometry. This approach is useful for concept development in product design, where designers and engineers can take advantage of CAD software to explore potential shapes for attractive and dynamic consumer products.

Fusion 360 software offers powerful tools for creating models and renderings with great attention to detail. This class will focus on 2 key elements that are critical in product design. The first one is T-Splines modeling, which enables the creation of complex forms in a quick way while maintaining high-quality surfaces. People often comment that using T-Splines for organic shapes cuts down modeling time from hours to minutes. This method also enables designers and engineers to easily explore forms without distractions from complicated workflows. The second key element of this class will focus on rendering, a critical tool for visualizing design intent and “selling” designs to broader audiences. Fusion 360 software offers a powerful and simple platform for photorealistic rendering, eliminating the use of a separate software package. This session features Fusion 360.

In this class, we will discuss a complete workflow on how to use the PipeFab application inside of Revit software to do efficient and precise modeling and cut sheets for pipe work inside of Revit. The topics covered will include, but will not be limited to: cutting pipes to desired lengths; listing pipes; automatic numbering for mains and ranges; modeling helpers; and patch detailing pipe offsets with one click.

A real-life metro project design will be demonstrated through using Autodesk AEC Collection. Design Authoring, 3D Coordination, Existing Conditions Modelling, Creation of Design Documents and Engineering Analysis were the BIM uses of the project. In this class, you will learn how to connect your Civil 3D models into the Dynamo environment using C# programming language and the Zero Touch interface. Learn how to connect to a running Civil 3D application using the Civil 3D COM API, and create customized nodes for common Civil 3D object types. We will then import the Zero Touch library into Dynamo Studio, where we will apply the new nodes into a Dynamo canvas and extract Civil 3D model data for analysis or construction. Finally, we will investigate how we can transfer data from within Dynamo back into our current Civil 3D model objects. This session is intended for those wishing to extend their Civil 3D customization skills, capitalizing on the power of the Dynamo interface.
