Denver International Airport (DEN) has been capitalizing on the value of the BIM 360 platform for 8 years. Now DEN is deploying the latest tools on the BIM 360 platform on more than $2 billion worth of capital improvement projects, for every purpose from production, coordination, quality assurance, and review in design, to inspections, asset data capture, and quality assurance and quality control in construction, to transitioning to operations at handover. BIM 360 Design Collaboration, BIM 360 Glue software, Navisworks software, BIM 360 Model Coordination, BIM 360 Docs software, BIM 360 Insight software, and BIM 360 Field Management have all provided value to DEN. With the latest BIM tools, it is becoming increasingly clear that leadership in BIM adoption must begin with the owner as the ultimate customer for all facility data.

The collaboration features of Revit Structure software with Structural Analysis software were widely presented and experienced over the last years. However, despite all this featured software, many structural engineers still stay with their Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and their common pencil-and-paper routine. Not all software supports all codes, and very often it is faster to use those light spreadsheets than it is to work with heavy analysis software. This workshop will demonstrate how you can implement those spreadsheets into the parameter fields of a Revit software family, making use of the formula capabilities of the Revit software parameter and of nested families in order to make Revit software tasty for engineers. We will present examples that will include a reinforced-concrete footing design, a concrete retaining wall, timber joists designs, and a timber joist cantilever design. The workshop will also cover the documentation features and possibilities.

This hands-on lab covers integration with Revit®-based software, demonstrating simplified collaboration and coordination between design teams; integration with Navisworks®-based software for construction activities such as quantification and 4D simulation; and taking BIM further than preconstruction into the field and beyond with BIM 360 mobile technology.

Parts first became available in Revit® Structure 2012 and has been widely improved upon since then. This hands-on lab starts with a discussion of the evolution of the Parts tool since it was introduced and explores the many potential applications and uses for this tool. From collaboration and coordination with other disciplines to increasing internal efficiency, this tool has immense potential in the design phase of a project. The lab exercise enables attendees to use the tool and try out some of the features in a simulated project. In addition to covering the positive aspects of this tool, this lab also discusses and demonstrates some prospective challenges associated with using Parts in various applications.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has selected the design of its new Southern California headquarters located on a 19-acre site near the campus of University of California Riverside. The approximately 380,000-square-foot facility will be one of the largest and most advanced vehicle-emissions testing and research facilities in the world. It will also be the largest “net-zero energy” structure (producing as much energy as it uses) of its type in the nation. Learn how Hensel Phelps and U.S. CAD used the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection to procure, win, and manage a project through design into construction. Topics will include using Navisworks software as a starting point in design validation for AR/VR environments, using 3ds Max software with drone data to implant design in existing spaces, managing detailed level trade partner files for field validation using drone data and laser scans, using Civil 3D files to help quantify and manage earthwork, and validating coordinated 3D models in the field via use of tablets and BIM 360 Glue software.

A real-life metro project design will be demonstrated through using Autodesk AEC Collection. Design Authoring, 3D Coordination, Existing Conditions Modelling, Creation of Design Documents and Engineering Analysis were the BIM uses of the project. Stations, tunnels, underground utilities and real environment of the project were modeled by using Revit, Infraworks and Civil 3D. Autodesk CFD, Revit, MagiCAD tools helped designers for engineering analysis and simulation studies. Active use of technologies such as reality capture, virtual reality played an important role in the design process.

Using our large 3D model set, we take different parts of our attractions and put the moving pieces together. With geometry from across the project fed into the engine and presented in 3D. Like a 3D world from a game, but it’s a real place. While Walt Disney Imagineering is not developing VR rides, we use VR in various ways to help us design and test rides. This commitment to making the illusion complete for the viewer has led to some really fascinating advances from Disney R&D and Imagineering. From group experiences in simulator rooms to some more radical ways to simulate our attractions and experiences, VR is an integral design tool. That also means putting in media, animated figures, and other timed effects. Every piece of our puzzle to create our attraction, we put into a virtual reality simulation. With the VR, we make quick iterations with our creative team and ultimately this VR environment timing feeds real world controllers for the attraction in some really amazing ways.

Attendees will learn about the real issues involved with rolling new technology out to field teams. We’ll cover the overall view of technology within field operations staff. We’ll go over a brief history of mobile technology, where we’ve come from, and where we’ll be going in the next 10 years. We will present a use case at Hudson yard where we rolled out PlanGrid in the field, and we’ll go over why it worked, what struggles we had, and what major lessons we learned. And we will cover how to develop a technology implantation plan and conduct a tech rollout.

Technology and our professions are evolving at rapid rates, markets continue to tighten, and people are living and working longer. As we continue, we need to establish and maintain a skilled workforce, which is more challenging as more generations need to work together. Each generation provides unique individuals with preferences, skills, and values formed by their life experiences. Varying ideals and styles of communication can cause problems between generations, which has always been somewhat the case—but this baseline discrepancy is heightened by swiftly advancing technology and a continually changing professional landscape. We will examine differences and similarities among the generations in such a way that the dialog will offer strategies to capitalize on the strengths of each group. It is understanding and appreciating the uniqueness of each group that will help establish a successfully collaborative environment in a multigenerational workplace.

This class will cover the story and the key technicalities of My Home Experience, an ambitious project that is replacing “normal” decorated apartments by customizable virtual reality (VR) ones all across Brazil. We will start by showing off how a partnership between IM Designs and MRV is helping change the way people experience their dream homes. We’ll then dive into how to prepare your data set to fit your immersive technology (XR) hardware. For that, we’ll show how we solved performance and hardware limitation issues while achieving incredibly realistic looks through a series of optimization techniques in 3ds Max software, and we’ll explain their impact on real-time rendering. You’ll gain info about light baking, UVs, retopology, RTT for baking AO, normals, and more. On the hardware side, we’ll see how those techniques affect your GPU, CPU, and memory, and how to profile them to boost rendering performance. We’ll then finish by showing off the final implementation in untethered VR, and its challenges. We hope everyone learns a lot from our case.

This session will focus on transfer of steel fabrication elements from Revit software to Advance Steel software and back. There have been many changes in recent years, so for users and managers of these systems, it is sometimes difficult to understand the background process being used. Therefore, we’ll focus upon the various database types, tables, and locations, and what’s used for which parts of the process, so users can understand how to manage this operation in both platforms to achieve a successful collaboration. We’ll see how the correct use of the mapping database and creation of elements in both software systems, as a management operation, enables a smooth transfer, which is very important in multidisciplinary organizations—so CAD managers understand the need for this processing. Have correct Revit families created to the steel fabrication format, materials identified and mapped, and connection instances created.

Vault product data management (PDM) software helps designers and engineers better organise design data, enhance documentation management, and streamline revision processes of their product data. Product data is not exclusively used by development teams, but should also be available outside the engineering department. On the other hand, the engineers require data from upstream processes such as sales orders and specifications. And that's where a product lifecycle management (PLM) system like Fusion Lifecycle software comes into the play. Fusion Lifecycle serves as a company-wide information source for activities before, during, and after development actions, supported by automated processes. In this class, we will have a look at how both worlds (PDM and PLM) can be tied together to streamline the workflows throughout the whole product development cycle.

Modern communication lets people to talk to each other almost anywhere at any time. But using audio and video conferencing is very different than face-to-face communication. In this talk, we will show how we can use augmented reality (AR), reality capturing, and Autodesk technologies to create new types of connected design collaboration experiences that overcome limitations of traditional technology. We will share how to turn intelligent models with 3ds Max software into immersive experiences. We will show how 3D capture technology lets 3D models of people be captured and transmitted to different locations. When combined with AR displays such as Microsoft HoloLens, these technologies let users see, hear, and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they were actually present in the same physical space, and at the same time collaborate with 3D design models. This enables engineers to collaborate over distance, provides a deeper understanding of the design, and enables better-informed decisions in less time.
