Design review sessions are an essential part of product development for everything from automotive to architecture to manufacturing. It is essential to bring together stakeholders and experts from all disciplines—including design, engineering, and manufacturing—early in the design process. Visualizing prototype designs in VRED software in real time has been invaluable in discovering potential issues and delivering better products on a faster cycle. We have developed a set of design review tools implemented in Python inside of VRED to enable work sessions to be more effective and create a documentation trail for concrete decision making without resorting to as much physical prototype construction. Using ray tracing, VRED can enable reliable review of design details, especially glass, mirrors, and metals. Real-time remote collaboration enables participation from far-flung departments around the world without requiring travel. This session will explore case studies and demonstrate these capabilities.

This infrastructure symposium session is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) discussion focused on effective practices between owners and the engineering ecosystem regarding large transportation projects. Do you manage infrastructure projects involving airports, rail, or ports? Do you work for an engineering firm that provides engineering, design, or construction on those projects? This session is for you if your projects often cross multiple designs (architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil); if they require intense collaboration across design disciplines, owners, and construction contractors; and if they require a BIM manager. Get advice from BIM experts in the industry and participate in a discussion regarding needs and perspectives from both owners and the engineering/contractor ecosystem. Most BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools are made for designers or mechanical contractors, leaving electrical construction to blaze trails and share what we’ve learned with one another. Now that we’ve earned the trust of our co-workers to build 3D models, we must step up to an even bigger challenge: efficiently taking coordination models to fabrication. This course consists of lessons learned from past projects, ideas shamelessly stolen from smarter people, and ideas on how to improve in the coming years.

In this session, we will explore methodologies and workflows to prevent files from getting corrupted due to internal and external factors. We will review 7 things that cause drawing slowness, and we’ll show how to repair the drawings.

This class will explore the design process, the collaboration, and the data flows of a cloud-based instrumentation and electrical design project. The class will also review the advantages of cloud-based technology for this purpose, and we will provide hands-on interaction with a cloud project, so bring your Internet-ready laptop to the class. We will also cover the design and data flows between a synchronized AutoCAD P&ID software project and a cloud instrumentation and electrical project, and we will review the integration with AutoCAD software products required at the client end of the cloud-based project. The class will also have an overall focus of creating, modifying, and generating instrumentation and electrical deliverables such as loop diagrams, junction-box wiring diagrams, hookups, datasheets, and reports.

This class is about creating a project environment that enables automatic creation and access to fully data-rich Navisworks software models from all 3D modeling software. We will discuss model structures, as well as synchronization of native files to cloud-based servers that enables the Building Information Modeling (BIM) data process to be automated and enable unlimited export customization of all types of software, reducing the work of BIM technicians. These processes include handling of spatial relationships between AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Revit software, and ProStructures plug-in, and all the automated steps required to take live native files at any point in time to fully prepared clean, data-rich Navisworks models using BIM flow technology. We will also discuss and demonstrate the importance of all project participants having access to these models with intuitive tools to access and filter models, and in doing so, creating full project awareness. We will then discuss how to move all of the above into a truly centralized review process using the Navisworks software platform.

In this session, we’ll look at ideal workflows for transferring and managing data models from Mechanical, Plant and Process engineering into BIM 360 Docs. Based on a real world experience we will share best practices and lessons learned on how to synchronize engineering data from model authoring systems into the Cloud. We will discuss and demonstrate the importance of all project participants having access to these models with intuitive tools to search and analyze models, and in doing so, creating full project awareness. The session will conclude with the various positive business impacts companies can achieve by implementing such a hybrid environment.

The South China University of Technology (SCUT) robotic team never stop seeking brand-new solutions for improved efficiency and quality workflow from design to manufacturing. Zhen-Po led his team, the South China Tigers, to a first-place RoboMaster 2019 regional championship through the adoption of generative design tools in Fusion 360 software. Zhen-Po was hired by the RoboMaster’s organizer, DJI, an electronics manufacturer in China after graduation. Combining 27 parts to only a single part for the stabilizer mount achieved a final weight of 170 grams—a 42% weight reduction compared to the original computer numerical control (CNC) process. Reducing the material waste while enhancing the strength by generativity adding support, therefore reducing the mass of the robot while ensuring structural integrity, the mechanical team’s entire iterative cost was reduced by 80%, which would not have been possible before.

This class will explain how to manage and improve the construction process of linear infrastructure projects with BIM 360 software in order to improve data quality and reduce costs and time by 60%. The digitalization of these processes enables us to retrieve relevant data and information directly in the construction site, reducing wastefulness and promoting sustainability. Currently we are managing roughly 150 projects with BIM 360 Docs, BIM 360 Field, and BIM 360 Project Management software. For these projects we mainly implemented three processes: the quality check, the inspection survey in BIM 360 Field, and the design variation check. The workflows are valid either if the project has been developed with BIM methodology or through the traditional method. The management of the company can use data and statistics to analyze the progress and the status of the works through powerful dashboards made with Forge. We will show the workflows improvements with a clear metric analysis.

This presentation will focus on the challenges encountered in implementing a structured ISO 19650 approach to BIM (Building Information Modeling) and data management for the BART to Silicon Valley Phase II Project located in Northern California. During conceptual and preliminary design, the management of data across the 25 firms, 10 disciplines, and 49 locations was critical to the successful delivery of the first milestone submission. Traditional workflows were challenged and digital solutions introduced to integrate software from Autodesk (Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks, Assemble), Bentley (ProjectWise), Microsoft (SharePoint, Power BI), BIM Track, and various other applications (Leapfrog, Rhino). We will share some of the “secrets” of bringing these programs together with efficient and manageable processes and workflows; collecting, integrating, validating, and sharing data across teams; and using behavioral aspects in providing guidance and support to those new to a “one team” philosophy of digital collaboration.

This class will cover the workflow between Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software, from the design to the fabrication of a steel structure. In this class, you will learn how to handle the analytical model in Revit, use the collaboration with Robot Structural Analysis to obtain the analysis result, and then use those analysis results to create and verify Steel Connections inside the Code Checking module. After we create the fabrication model in Revit, you will use the collaboration with Advance Steel to create the final fabrication documents: NC, DXF, and detailed drawings.

Solar energy is clean and limitless, and the operational costs are close to nothing once you’ve installed a solar panel as no fuel is needed to create a considerable amount of energy. And a single kerosene wick burns an estimated 80 liters of fuel, producing more than 250 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year. To help people living in remote places with limited access to electricity, we made a low-cost solar light bulb as a replacement to a harmful kerosene lamp. We will share the technical workflow while creating the solar lamp inside the Fusion 360 Electronics and Modeling workspace, demonstrating an effective ECAD—MCAD collaboration.
