Transitioning your AutoCAD/Civil 3D projects to the Autodesk Forma platform can seem overwhelming, especially for small to mid-sized companies. In this case study, we’ll explore how Crozier Consultant Engineers successfully migrated both new and existing projects to Autodesk Forma (Forma Data Management, Forma Design Collaboration). For many companies, shifting from a Windows-based file system to Forma Data Management is a relatively new experience. We'll examine the benefits of working in a cloud environment, and the challenges of moving existing projects to the cloud. Additionally, we'll explore best practices for this transition and the tools that can facilitate the process.

Breaking Through the Cloud – A 30,000 ft View of Forma and Design Software Workflows

AutoCAD (& verticals) Plant 3D, and Revit all have different workflows with ACC/BIM 360 projects and the Desktop Connector. After many challenging hours I believe I have finally found a way to explain the various ACC/BIM 360 workflows and would like to share this knowledge with everyone else who's also dealing with all these various workflows and collaboration options. Specifically, I'm going to cover working with Revit, Plant 3D, and Civil 3D (same workflows for AutoCAD) with ACC and/or BIM 360 projects. I'll also cover the Desktop Connector 15 and 16 and the differences we've encountered, good and bad.

ACC for Civil Infrastructure Projects: It's What Highly Productive BIM Coordinators and CAD Managers Crave

This interactive lab will be an accelerator that will teach BIM coordinators and CAD managers how to effectively use Autodesk Forma to manage civil infrastructure projects with modern cloud-based tools. We’ll take an immersive approach to learning: The class will be split up into disciplines, simulating a real project. The disciplines will work together to federate a project model using preprepared files. We’ll start with the basics of recommended file organization in Forma Data Management, set up our coordination space in Modeling, walk through best practices for exporting and coordinating discipline-specific models, run a mock clash-detection meeting, create/organize and report on our Autodesk Forma Issues, and then archive our project simulating a milestone submittal. Many of the default coordination tools in Autodesk Forma are built with vertical construction in mind. But there’s a world of value for horizontal construction as well—you just have to know how to unlock it!

Sharing Fusion 360 Files Through to Vault

Last year we did a class (“How to Use Fusion 360 and Inventor for Effective Designs”) where we linked Fusion 360 files with Inventor using Desktop Connector. The most requested addition to that was to link those files into Vault software, so this year we’ll go through some of the different configurations for how we can load and manage these Fusion 360 files in Vault. Some of the things we will look at include creating the connection and adding the files, as well as managing the files; and we’ll also discuss version and revisions of the files in Vault.

Automated Feedback Tool for Student CAD Models Using the Fusion 360 API

Fusion 360 software is a cloud-powered CAD, CAM, and CAE tool, and it is the primary software for the instruction of degree apprentices at the AMRC Training Centre, part of the University of Sheffield. With rising student numbers, it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide detailed and timely feedback to students as they learned the basics of Fusion 360. In this session, Joe Palmer will present a bespoke feedback tool that has been coded in Python and implemented using the Fusion 360 API. This tool provides instantaneous feedback to students about the quality of their CAD models by assessing key model metrics. These metrics enable a complete picture of model quality to be determined by the script without any input from course tutors. This has empowered tutors to spend more time on valuable activities within the classroom. We will discuss a background of the Fusion 360 API, the tool's development process, and details of the scoring algorithm. We will also present a road map for future development.
