This talk will describe the challenges encountered when developing the common data environment (CDE) of the expansion project. Heathrow Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. The third runway will hugely increase passenger capacity and flight movement capacity. The expansion project requires the development of a highly constrained design from multiple suppliers that considers a vast amount of incoming information from multiple sources and stakeholders. The design must pass several major public and government approvals and is required to integrate into the current developing and future live digital twin of Heathrow. The CDE must facilitate all the challenges associated with the above to ensure the project can produce and provide the correct data and information needed for each audience as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. The design is developed in AutoCAD software, Revit software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, and Navisworks software. Data is stored in Esri, ProjectWise, SharePoint, and other specialist databases.

A generation of architecture, engineering, and construction professionals remembers the tumult that accompanied the rise of desktop CAD at the end of the ’80s and early ’90s: massive costs, glacial speed, and a lot of beige plastic. Fast forward to the current era, with the Internet, fast computers, and a variety of powerful applications at our fingertips. It is tempting to say we’ve never had it so good. However, as we reach a period of BIM (Building Information Modeling) maturity, there are lessons to be learned and new answers to be sought about how we work and communicate—from the internal team level all the way up to the intercompany level. Using the history of CAD and BIM adoption over the last 30-plus years as a framework, this talk will discuss how the current state of BIM maturity and application variety in the industry enables us—even necessitates us—to take a fresh look at how we are working together.

The class will give an overview of Subassembly Composer creation, share some tips and tricks that have been learned on the UK’s current largest infrastructure design project, and cover how you can use subassemblies to drive, standardize, and reduce error. We’ll demonstrate why business leaders need to think seriously about subassemblies and make them a key part of internal standards and practices.

The largest challenge when moving from Fabrication CADmep software to Revit software is your database. Your Fabrication Database has been altered and added to for many years now. But how well will it convert to Fabrication Parts in Revit? The class will review lessons learned from assisting many MEP organizations (from all three disciplines) to successfully move. The class will review tools developed by AEC Resource and MSuite to help you evaluate and prepare your database for the conversion. The tools can help you understand which items in your database may not convert properly, why they might not convert, and how to clean up the properties in your database. The tools will tell you which parts will transition well, and what do you do with those that won’t. When do you look at Revit Families to fill the void in your database transition? Moving a project using a .MAJ export from either Fabrication CADmep or Revit means you most likely will have some errors. Tools from MSuite will help identify and locate those errors.

In this 90-minute software demonstration, we’ll utilize some of Fusion 360 software’s latest CAM and collaborative functionality to tackle some of the biggest challenges our customers face. Design modification, quality control, and the accessing of difficult to machine areas can all prolong project completion. We’ll use brand-new toolpaths and probing functionality to demonstrate best practices for the designing, machining, and inspection of a complex mold tool. By the end of this session, we hope to expand your Fusion 360 knowledge, providing you with the latest information to help you improve your manufacturing efficiency.

This class will cover the use of BLK360, ReCAP Pro software, and Revit software. We will examine the scan-to-BIM process with Revit, and focus on a project where scan to BIM is letting our organization create accurate as-built models. This presentation will also demonstrate how easily users can measure from the point clouds and review planned alterations to drawings and/or models. We will also illustrate how our developed processes resulted in greater project efficiencies—the net result being reduced team sizes and faster completion times.

The concept of a BIM (Building Information Modeling) coordinator and virtual design and construction (VDC) manager/coordinator is still fairly new, and most of those with the responsibilities of BIM/VDC coordination came upon their duties, responsibilities, and titles in a roundabout fashion. Attendees of this session will see the paths that many BIM coordinators, BIM managers, VDC personnel, and BIM project team members responsible for project coordination took to get where they are. This session will also cover common duties, responsibilities, and best practices regarding the specific items for which most BIM coordinators are responsible. This session is intended for BIM managers, VDC managers, BIM coordinators, BIM job captains, and others responsible for coordination on BIM/VDC projects.

Ever wondered why Inventor software works the way it does? Ever had a question about a specific workflow or piece of functionality? Now is your chance to interact with a senior developer (or 2) of the Inventor product. Ask them why, how, or if about any aspect of Inventor. Receive technical explanations to your questions that may help you find another way to accomplish your task or understand the reasons for the current functionality. Explain your point of view directly to the people who make Inventor work and implement changes. This will be an honest 2-way communication on the hows and whys of Inventor workflows and technical details.

This class will cover using Dynamo with Fabrication Parts. It will be an intermediate class, which assumes attendees know the basics of Dynamo. We will add parameters to Fabrication Parts, look at the nodes available for Fabrication Parts, and build a few scripts to automate processes in Revit software. At the end of this class, we will look at additional possibilities for Dynamo within the Revit environment that will increase your departments’ productivity.

Many of our BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) are full of software requirements, file type requirements, and upload requirements. By the time it's all on paper, you have a document full of requirements and no actions. In this session, we'll present strategies and lessons learned in creating a BEP that is actionable and still holds everybody accountable to the guidelines needed to create a successful coordination phase of construction. Go beyond a glorified CAD management plan and clash assignments to create shared success for all project stakeholders.

Maybe you know the power of Revit software’s Family Editor but you’ve avoided it, or it’s intimidated you until now. Wait no more—this lab will introduce you to the basics of Family Editor. You’ll find that while Family Editor is extremely powerful, it can actually be great fun. In this short introduction to Family Editor, we’ll create a Revit component family complete with constraints and parameters. Don’t worry if you don’t know what a constraint or parameter is—we’ll cover that too. Whether you’ve never worked in Revit software before, or you’ve used Revit for a while but you’ve simply avoided Family Editor, this lab will teach you the basics of the Family Editor in a simple step-by-step fashion, and in the best way possible: hands on! (The session will use architectural examples, but the concepts apply to all flavors of the Revit software, including Revit LT.)

Shaun Bryant will take you through methods of learning, from traditional classroom, office, and home environments to the mobile world of laptops, tablets, and smartphones. He will discuss various methods of how to retain what you have learned, and how to reuse that knowledge to work toward Autodesk Certification and other professional qualifications in your discipline. This class will introduce and discuss the Autodesk Model Performance Analytics Dashboard, a tool that lets BIM managers, IT managers, project leaders, and firm leadership monitor Revit model health. The class will introduce the tools and the metrics it collects, and then discuss the steps to implement the tool in a 50-office structural engineering firm with 100% Revit adoption. We’ll discuss the key findings and improvements noted as a result of having visibility into the health scores. Finally, we’ll discuss other approaches to creating dashboards for tracking model performance in architecture, engineering, and construction firms.
