This case study session will explore the benefits of using Autodesk Takeoff software to use quantification data as a design tool throughout the building design process. As architects, we often overlook the importance of quantification and cost during the early phases of design, typically generating an unwelcome dose of reality downstream, leading to rework and intensive design changes. What if we could predict with greater fidelity and confidence the cost of our design in near real time, as we're designing and progressing Revit models. This was exactly our goal with implementing Takeoff. Reviewing case study projects, we'll demonstrate how we were able to bridge the gap between design intent and project budgets—thus, allowing 3D quantification through Takeoff to guide decision making during design, promote model quality throughout production, and rally project stakeholders around the same data within a collaborative Autodesk Construction Cloud environment.

The complexity and limited accessibility of MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) data have hindered its broader use. Traditionally confined to users proficient in specialized technology like Revit software, interactive dashboards are now a more intuitive way to consume and use this data. With Autodesk Power BI Data Connector, data from traditional authoring applications can seamlessly integrate into Power BI, providing a consolidated view of key metrics. This class will explore how to create Data Exchanges and use them to build interactive dashboards through practical examples such as the Electrical Systems Dashboard for reviewing calculations, material takeoff across multiple projects analysis using the AEC Data Model API, and a Space Dashboard for senior engineers to assess thermal loads and airflow. Capitalizing on Revit software for the field is the key to fully implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) in the construction industry. By examining some landmark projects—such the Miami All Aboard Station, Hard Rock Hollywood, and other projects—attendees will learn the importance of fully modeling outside conditions, cranes, formwork, and other construction-related activities to understand constructability and how this impacts costs and schedules. The complexity of bid packages, which combine 3D models and 2D drawings, has estimators worldwide struggling to calculate accurate quantities. The added pressure of receiving updated bid packages has also caused estimators to work long hours and have sleepless nights. The result is either not winning the job or winning with little profit. This is where Autodesk Takeoff software—the cloud-based 2D and 3D QTO tool hosted on Autodesk Construction Cloud—is proving to be a game changer. This lab will focus on giving attendees a hands-on experience of the connected takeoff process using the industry-leading automated 3D takeoff capabilities combined with easy-to-use 2D takeoff tools. You'll learn the process of setting up 3D and 2D takeoff types, adding unit cost to takeoff types, performing accurate takeoffs, updating the bid package with the new set of drawings, comparing existing snapshots to active takeoff currently in progress, and then exporting the combined 3D and 2D takeoff inventory.

In this session, we'll showcase the workflows we use with the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform on large health projects, including a full end-to-end example of how data is used from Model Checker for Revit, Navisworks 2024 with no file management clash runs, and Autodesk Construction Cloud issue creation, as well as tracking scope changes in models using Autodesk Takeoff. As teams work in Revit, data updates are automatically passed to a central database, combined with Autodesk Construction Cloud data, and then sent back to Autodesk Construction Cloud as additional Insight Dashboards integrated with existing data to simplify and highlight trends in clashes, and scope changes during the tendering and construction phase. We will also present some additional tools we've been using to close resolved clash issues automatically. And we'll show our additional Revit building information modeling (BIM) file which contains zones, levels, and rooms to support tracked changes to scope in takeoff with data trending. Finally, we will present a simple way to extract all parameters using Autodesk Construction Cloud asset model extraction for handover.
