This presentation will focus on simulation techniques used to compare traditional hurling stick material and performance against a composite redesign. We used several Autodesk tools—including Fusion 360 software, Netfabb software, Moldflow, and Autodesk Nastran software—to evaluate and optimize the performance of the composite structure.

In this class, you will learn about products in the Autodesk Simulation Moldflow software ecosystem that can bring fantastic and unique capabilities to Moldflow products. We will introduce you to capabilities that can help make your job easier, better, and more fun. The class will cover several products, including Autodesk® Simulation 360 cloud-based software and the Autodesk® Inventor® Fusion Technology Preview, which is a free history-free modeler that you can use to make simple changes to existing CAD geometry. We will also cover the Autodesk® Simulation® DFM add-on, which is a designer tool that helps you develop a plastic part that follows standard plastic design rules and can help you avoid time-consuming iterations between the Moldflow user and the CAD designer. You will learn about Autodesk® PLM 360 cloud-based product lifecyle management and Autodesk® Vault, Autodesk® Showcase®, and Autodesk® Inventor® Publisher software. We will also examine Autodesk® Simulation Mechanical software and the tooling capabilities of Autodesk® Inventor® software. Finally, we will introduce you to the Project Simulus Technology Preview from Autodesk Labs.

Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a relatively established technique for manufacturing continuous fiber composites. As lightweighting initiatives continue in automotive, new techniques for RTM are being established to reduce cycle time. Join the Moldflow and OCTO Teams for a discussion and demonstration of the RTM capabilities within Moldflow software, including forming simulations to acquire fiber orientations for the flow simulation in Moldflow software. This session features Moldflow and TruPlan.

In this class we will show how to build practical API scripts using the API in the Moldflow Insight software product. We will explore concepts such as functions and error checking. The class will introduce the API functionality and conventions through a series of scripts that highlight common tasks completed with the API. Key areas covered will include building a custom report generator, modifying geometry, modifying analysis inputs, running simulations, and interfacing with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. We will take some time to explain the data formats stored with the Study (.sdy) file. This knowledge is invaluable to API users wishing to change property data guidelines on buildings. We will also discuss high-performance scripts. The lab will consist of a mixture of lectures and hands-on exercises to ensure that we cover the theoretical and practical aspects of building API scripts. Some programming knowledge is preferred, but not required.

The Simulation Moldflow Insight Certification Exams will be held Monday, December 1, at Mandalay Bay J from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Last year we explored different approaches to injection molding simulations with Simulation Moldflow Insight software. This year we will dive into approaches to measuring warpage results. We have given individual users a problem to solve using Simulation Moldflow Insight software. We will present their approaches, and then we will compare and contrast the different approaches. Compression molding is a process by which pressure is applied to a material by a heat mold. In the case of thermoset elastomers (rubber), the heat and pressure initiate cross linking of the polymer. A specific weight and shape of a material (called a preform) is placed into an open mold, after which the mold halves close. This compression stroke forces the resin to flow and fill out the cavity. After the mold is filled and pressure is applied for a given time (cure time) the mold is split open and the part is removed either by hand or by ejection methods. This process can be applied to both thermoplastic and thermoset materials, both with or without fiber reinforcement. Compression molding simulation can help determine the feasibility and conditions of the manufacturing process, including the size and placement of the preform(s), the internal cavity pressures, and temperatures during the process. These factors enable us to determine how tool and process design affect product quality. During this class, we will discuss an application of compression molding and compare it with compression molding analysis results.

This class reviews new functionality in Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Insight software and discusses recent and current research directions of Moldflow development. We cover the following capabilities: viscoelastic warp calculations, improved wall slip calculations, the influence of mold deflection, ejection force predictions, analysis of mold fatigue, flow imbalances (airflow), 3D compression molding, 3D conformal cooling, 3D hot runner elements, crystallization analysis, long fiber composites, and mesh preparation.

This class has two parts. First, we will review a study on using corrected residual in-molded stress (CRIMS) data to predict warpage. In this study, we selected five parts of increasing complexity and material flow path. We simulated five different materials with various process parameters. From the simulated data, we selected high-warp scenarios for molding and warpage and compared the results with CRIMS and without CRIMS. The study showed the importance and effect of warpage. Statistically, we found that using CRIMS to predict warpage showed a 10 times better probability of being accurate and a 29% improvement in accuracy. Next, we will look at using supplemental data. CRIMS data is specifically measured/generated by Autodesk® Simulation Moldflow® software by molding trails. The test method is expensive. Therefore, for selected materials, we can supplement CRIMS with equivalent material in the existing Moldflow data base. The experiment shows the effectiveness of method.

During this class we will address major issues related to 3D shrinkage and warpage analysis in injection molding. We would like to start with an introduction of mechanism of shrinkage and warpage. We will discuss the generic shrinkage model and its limitations. We will also present 3D thermo-viscous-elastic residual stress model and thermo-viscoelastic residual stress model. Finally, we will explore some advanced topics, such as corner-effect, in-mold shrinkage, stress relaxation, buckling, and large deflection analysis.

Microcellular Injection Molding (MuCell) is a mechanical foaming process used to improve the performance/weight characteristics of an injection-molded part. This class focuses on the Microcellular Injection Molding module for Autodesk® Simulation Moldflow® Insight. We explore how well the module correlates with real-world molded samples, determine the best approach for using the module for a brand new mold, and discuss any limitations to the module.

The metal injection molding (MIM) process is a combined one of the injection molding and powder metallurgy, and it is used to manufacture complex metallic parts. Now Moldflow Insight software can simulate the MIM process and predict different common defects from the MIM process, such as weld lines, air traps, and "black lines" caused by the powder segregation. The Moldflow Research and Development Team has teamed with AAC Technologies (the world's leading comprehensive microcomponent technology provider) to simulate this process. This class will introduce the basic theory, challenges, and actual cases to show the MIM feature in Moldflow Insight software. Finally, an excellent correlation was achieved with validation data provided by AAC. This session features Moldflow Insight.

The Moldflow Sensitivity Study, a design of experiments (DOE), determined the impact of common Autodesk Simulation Moldflow Insight software processing inputs on common results. It also helped to determine the level of interaction among these settings and the impact of material- and geometry-specific interactions. We will highlight the methods used for performing the study, including tcodes, tcodesets, scripts, the Moldflow command shell, creation of studies, modification of studies, extraction of results, and more. Attendees will be able to repeat a similar study with their own commonly used geometries and materials. Study results will help Moldflow Insight users to increase efficiency by reducing design optimization time and determining the magnitude of impact of commonly used process settings. Note: This study included some functionality not currently available in the Moldflow Insight DOE module.

There are several commercially available optimization software packages on the market. BD has successfully used HEEDS MDO (a multidisciplinary design optimization software package) with Abaqus FEA to drive part design. Now we take the next step: connecting HEEDS MDO with Simulation Moldflow Insight 2015 software to explore process space for optimization and strength of part quality.

Cloud computing is revolutionizing engineering and product development. This class will examine how Autodesk Simulation 360 cloud-based software and Autodesk® Simulation Moldflow® software have been used by Articulinx to develop a pioneering medical device implant used to treat osteoarthritis. We will demonstrate and discuss the advantages of using a cloud-based approach to product development.

This class will describe the benefits of using PowerShape software and Moldflow Insight to model and simulate a conformal cooling tool. With 3D printing on the rise, conformal cooling is becoming a more widely available option to create cooling channels in metal in order to more evenly cool a plastic component during the molding process. Utilizing the modeling power of PowerShape to build a mold with channels following the geometry of the plastic part-and then validating the channels using Moldflow-can save time and money by eliminating the need to 'build it and hope it works."
