Dynamo + GitHub = DynaHub: Adopting a New innovative Repository for Dynamo Content
When adopted throughout a company, people can be intimidated by visual programming, Dynamo can feel confusing, and collaboration can be difficult. Therefore, managing Dynamo libraries is labor intensive. GitHub is widely used in software engineering for facilitating collaboration and consistency of code over time. However, it has never been applied in computational design. DynaHub—an open-source Dynamo extension that connects Dynamo to GitHub—bridges a gap by letting you push and pull automations and packages from a centralized and accessible repository. Any user or organization, through their GitHub account, can use the Dynamo scripts stored in their own repository, knowing that they are using the most recent and validated version. By adopting this strategy at Willow, we experienced an increase in productivity, confidence, and usage.

Dynamo—Everyone’s Doing It
This session is not for people who are heavy Dynamo software users. This session is for people who aren’t programmers (visual or other), but from time to time may need to use Dynamo as part of their workflows. It’s also for people who have heard of Dynamo, or visual programming, but never thought it was something they could do (but it totally is!). It’s also for those who just don’t think Dynamo can help them in their everyday workflows (don’t be so sure). By the end of this session, you will have an introductory understanding of Dynamo. You will learn that Dynamo can be used to create geometry with parametric relationships, and that this geometry can then be pushed into a Revit software project or family using the Revit software database. You will learn that Dynamo can do more than just geometry. It can also help with everyday tasks like creating grids and levels, adding some trees to your site, performing an energy analysis, or even changing your text from sentence case to all CAPS. This session features Revit and Dynamo Studio. AIA Approved

Increasing the Parametric-ness of MEP Designs (Dynamo Included)
When designing MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems, why do we duplicate work? Why do we do things we don't have to do? We're not talking about cutting corners. We're talking about not repeating steps and taking advantage of information that's already available. In terms of MEP design, it seems like a lot of information is duplicated. For example, the loads in the building determine the size and capacity of the mechanical systems. After that, the equipment is sized, then some type of distribution system is sized, and then all of this must be documented. How would design change if we started to tie some of this information together? Revit software has the ability to do some of this, and Dynamo software can be used to fill in the gaps. When we use Revit to its full potential, and then add Dynamo to the workflow, MEP designs become more and more parametric. This in turn increases productivity and reduces time, which is what we're really after.

An Open Discussion on Current MEP Workflows in Revit
As engineers, we typically have certain ways we like things to be done. But Revit software has an exact way things must be done. Often, those 2 ways are not the same. While most people agree that using Revit as part of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process is the way to go, we still face challenges with some of these strict program workflows. For example, maybe you have trouble automating parameters and getting systems to calculate properly, or getting circuits to behave the way you want them to. The good news is that there have been several improvements to the MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) tools in Revit over the past few years. And with the development of Dynamo software, MEP design in Revit has made some major leaps forward. In this session, we'll discuss the current pitfalls and issues with MEP workflows inside Revit. Then we can focus on solutions or work-arounds that improve productivity. It's always great to be able to discuss your problems with other people who struggle with the same things. Let's talk about these ideas and share our solutions.

Revit API for Designers—Use Cases for Extending Creativity
This course will explore the use of the Revit software API to enhance creative problem solving in the design process. The Revit API is a powerful tool for extending the Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow and introducing new capabilities. Custom Revit API tools are often created to help with productivity and or build professional add-ins. However, learning the Revit API as a designer can be a powerful way to extend Revit software to facilitate creative problem solving and exploration, and model data visualization. We will explore use cases for using the Revit software API to create stand-alone parametric interfaces and to capitalize on the API within the Dynamo computational design environment. This session features Revit and Dynamo Studio. AIA Approved

Practical Design Computation: Dynamo for Informed Design and Streamlined BIM
Design computation is a way of thinking and approaching design that goes beyond the tools involved. This class will focus on how Dynamo visual programming language extension fits into the design computation workflow at NBBJ and the larger architecture industry by walking through a series of example tools, processes, and approaches to computation. Dynamo extension excels at bridging the gap between what Revit software does really well and the ways that designers want to work. The class will explore practical examples along 2 primary avenues: workflow automation and rapid feedback. Key to both is data management. Revit software holds a lot more information than it easily presents. By extracting data and synthesizing it with internal or external information, Dynamo extension can push that information back into the model or present it to the designer to drive informed decisions.

Global Design Communication: Collaboration for Revit
Work sharing is commonly known by Revit users and is critical when it comes to collaborative design. Obviously, with collaboration comes communication. The more dispersed teams are, the more important efficient communication becomes. In this session, we'll discuss how the next-gen Revit work sharing can help teams to understand design changes, no matter where team members are. We'll not only look at how designers update their team members about changes, but also how these changes are communicated to external stakeholders in a controlled way and how we can visualize these design changes in 3D. Finally, we'll explain how you can collect feedback from non-Revit users, and how you can create deliverables using Dynamo software. The core of this process is BIM 360 software, which we'll also briefly discuss.

Automating MEP design using Dynamo
Japanese firm Nihon Sekkei has utilized Revit MEP throughout the entire design (schematic and detailed design) and quantity survey phases of projects their office has undertaken. In Japan, BIM hasn’t typically been used for MEP design, but more commonly for 3D modeling and services coordination. To ensure success, Nihon Sekkei established a BIM based workflow using several means; first, Dynamo based parametric design to coordinate space and family information, which aided automatic design activities and helped engineers make more informed decisions; second, they employed custom Revit MEP tools to calculate the heat load and automatically size pipe to Japanese industry standards; and lastly, a custom Revit quantity survey plug-in, that leveraged the Revit MEP model. In Japan, quantity surveys for public buildings are produced by the design firm. To automate this process and shorten the time taken to deliver these documents, Nihon Sekkei developed a custom Revit plug-in, and added information systematically to each element to ensure outputs would meet local Japanese regulations. In this class, Nihon Sekkei team members provide an overview of their approach, including the use of Revit MEP and Dynamo for design related activities.
