We live in a world where our major challenge is to get more and more efficient in the way we work. For long, we have used 2D drawings as basis for communication, planning and construction, but we are heading for a new age where tools and software now allows us to eliminate the use of 2D drawings. In project planning, parametric design is one of the new major tools to increase project efficiency. We will show you how to use parametric models to develop projects faster, how models helps increase collaboration and how to control the process all the way to construction, eliminating the use of 2D drawings.

We will use real project examples from hydropower to show our work with parametric design in Infraworks, Revit and Dynamo, and how we are now conducting a large construction project in Norway without the use of 2D drawings.

Currently there are many engineering software systems designed to efficiently evaluate different structural solutions and/or strategies for reinforced concrete buildings. However, turning the adopted solution into a full Revit model (including rebars in RC elements) is still a very time-consuming task that diminishes the efficiency obtained in the previous analysis/design phase. Native Revit tools for rebar detailing are helpful if structural elements are limited in number, but they lack the required efficiency when working in middle- to large-size projects. In this class, you'll see the challenges faced, and the workflow and solutions used to develop a Dynamo tool that communicates via API with the finite element analysis software CSI ETABS 2016. This tool automatically puts the reinforcement of different structural elements (such as regular and irregular walls, columns, and beams) into the Revit model.

Within the industrial water market, it can be a real challenge to bridge the gap between tools that are great for designing buildings and tools that are great for designing process plants. Achieving design synchronization between spatial and schematic designs with a high level of confidence is the ultimate goal. However, producing process schematics and spatial drawings and managing the equipment data becomes complex when dealing with traditional data silos in current project execution processes. True data-driven workflows will require innovation and disruption to achieve next-level results. This is one story of how Revit software, Dynamo, and Forge have helped us look at this traditional problem from a new perspective. We’ve solved some longstanding challenges, and we still have some unanswered questions, but we’re excited and optimistic about the possibilities for the future.

Bonava is a leading residential developer of affordable housing units in Northern Europe. To achieve this goal, lowering costs and increasing productivity is essential. Standardized single-family housing units have been developed, with accompanying models, drawings, and documentation in Revit software. When the site layout is ready, Dynamo software helps to get the information from the houses to the site model and vice versa. While solutions for the houses are predefined, site design remains the largest variable. We use generative design tools to create more-detailed site-layout solutions in earlier stages, and measure both hard and soft values for each option. Now, numbers back up design exploration, making it possible to identify correlations between different design metrics. Furthermore, this lets us bring representatives of different disciplines to fact-based discussions very early on, to assess the plot and make informed decisions for further development.

3D printing has become increasingly popular on construction sites, allowing firms to facilitate the construction process and decrease carbon footprint. It's a challenging exercise, due to the size of elements and the fact that they can't be reinforced, nor can the finishes be easily achieved. In order to democratize 3D printing, the decision was made to tackle the problem differently. The creation of 3D-parametric-printed formworks, urban furniture, or complex beam nodes/intersection is automated. This enables the reduction of production time and costs, as these elements can be produced in an infinite quantity and easily mounted on site. It also enables carbon footprint reduction by getting rid of wooden formworks and trucks for concrete pouring, and reducing the waste and time involved in creating those elements. The use of parametric elements to create these objects allows a full customization and replication. A deployment kit has been created for their subcontractors. Mandai Bird Park Project is an innovative sustainable-construction initiative in Singapore designed to create Asia's largest bird park in a 23-hectaire nature reserve. The design consists of eight massive walk-through aviaries inspired by diverse habitats, 20-meter-tall waterfalls, and an 84-meter-long archway. As part of the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan, the team had to keep in mind sustainability and preservation goals to minimize changes to the original landscape topology, preserve existing flora and fauna, and replicate a tropical landscape incorporated within the architecture. This intensified the overall construction complexity. The class will show how we fully used building information modeling (BIM) as a single source of truth, reality capture. and cloud platforms, including drone mapping, laser scanning, and 3D surface modeling with Revit, Navisworks, Dynamo, and ReCap software throughout the virtual design and construction (VDC) implementation. This saved us 30% in survey costs, achieved 100% reuse of excavated soil, and prevented the aviaries from clashing with the trees.

Integrating building performance analysis results in the early stage of conceptual design supports effective design exploration and decision making. Such integration requires domain expertise and can be technically challenging, time consuming, and computationally expensive. Machine learning demonstrates great potential for building seamless workflows that provide faster analysis feedback. However, one of the challenges in the architecture domain is the lack of diverse data sets to train effective prediction models. This talk will provide a brief overview of the potential of machine learning in building analysis-prediction models and demonstrate how we can capitalize on generative design to compensate for the lack of data. We will present a workflow where generative design features for Revit software, Dynamo software, and Insight software are used to generate a synthetic data set for training a machine-learning model for energy-analysis prediction.

In this session, we will explore some Dynamo tips and tricks to improve your workflow, add efficiency to your graphs, and maybe even add a little fun to your day. We will look at some simple tips that you can easily implement in your daily workflow to add automation and increase efficiency. We will also explore some more-complicated tips and tricks that are less general and designed for specific architecture, engineering, construction, and owner-operated (AECO) workflows. We will also spend some time looking at tricks that take advantage of the latest Dynamo updates, including Dynamo extensions for Dynamo 2.x. Then we will wrap it all up by looking at some of the packages that make these tips and tricks possible. While the general flow of this class will be exploratory and fun, the tips and tricks reviewed will help you increase efficiency and productivity within your everyday Dynamo workflow.

Our intelligent models are rich with modeled elements, parameters, and materials; they're ripe for the assessment of their CO2 impact. Yet how do we make that process seamless? During this session we'll review ways to pull your BIM (Building Information Modeling) elements and apply rich Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data sets against them, pushing that information back into Revit software, and visualize the overall impact using Revit software’s available color schemes.

This class will cover 2 separate workflows uploading data to BIM 360 Ops software. Attendees will get an in-depth look at the process UCHealth employed to upload data to BIM 360 Ops directly from Revit software for the Greeley hospital project, and through BIM 360 Glue software and BIM 360 Field software for the Highlands Ranch Hospital project. As the title of this session indicates, we will share lessons learned. Attendees will get an overview of the team structure and data flow, as well as a deeper dive into how to overcome the challenges the UCHealth team encountered, such as parameter concatenation, data revision, and uploading of information changes. Dynamo for a long time has been the go-to tool of Revit users to quickly script solutions to time-consuming routine problems. However, there is much more that Dynamo can do beyond scripting. 4D time simulation in Navisworks software for construction projects are often complicated BIM (Building Information Modeling) services to be used on a daily basis. Reasons can include problems in model coordination, time and element mismatches, time model execution availability, and more. With this approach, we will use the Dynamo player and Dynamo workflows over Revit 2021 software to clean, manage, label, and even create a time schedule so 4D simulation can be easily created and the communication proposal facilitates model coordination and execution. We will cover several routine workflows so that all elements for any type of intelligent model are aligned clean and useful for project management, enabling us to link the model and time schedules with Navisworks in record time. This instructional demo is the synthesis of 13 years of simulations from different projects to make 4D simulation a required task for all projects.
