This class will help you to explore preliminary bridge design options by using Bridge Design for InfraWorks 360 software to visualize realistic civil structures in the context of the surrounding proposed site. Then Structural Bridge Design software is used to analyze the bridge in the cloud. We run a line girder analysis to verify the structural strength of the bridge girders and ensure they meet design standard requirements. Next, we take the design into Navisworks software to uncover design problems and constructability issues more effectively and plan the construction sequencing. The InfraWorks 360 model is taken into AutoCAD Civil 3D software for precise grading. Then we round-trip the model back into InfraWorks 360 for better design communication. Drawing Production is a process in which BIM Models should be used to generate drawings from the model including (General Plans, Plan & Profiles, Setting out, X- sections …etc). the current industry focus is always on the upstream Model Authoring process without much attention on what should be generated out of this model. And that’s where the problems start to arise. In this Session, you will learn how to unlock the full potential of Autodesk Civil 3D to tackle most of the drawing production challenges. We will focus on transportation and utilities sheet types and aim to demonstrate how to minimize the drawing production process time by around 90% of its current common status through demonstrating a BIM based approach, new features and workarounds.

BIM as both a process and a type of software has been utilized for architectural and engineering design and documentation for some time now, and its use continues to spread to more facets of the AEC industry. This class will focus on the BIM process as it applies now more than ever to both the civil and construction trades. Using real world examples and core design concepts, we will explore strategies for how the civil and construction trades can best coordinate with the other trades' BIM models and data. We will also discuss the benefits of improving civil engineering collaboration with the other BIM models during the design and documentation stage, and later incorporating the construction and subcontractor models. With increased collaboration at every stage comes improved design efficiency, reduced costs, and the potential for a more interactive model deliverable that can be leveraged by owners for operations and maintenance.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Linear Structures started to emerge in different markets. Through the last five years, this field has witnessed huge improvements either by individual personnel or by large engineering firms. Our firm – accordingly – has made a considerable accomplishment through developing coherent in-house workflow tools. These tools work by integrating Civil 3D®, Revit® and Dynamo® through API to automate BIM model creation, which – by its turn – allows for 2D drawings automated extraction. They have been further effectively and successfully applied to real-world projects.

Most people are now familiar with a concept of level of detail and levels of information. Data and geometry have their benefits but when combined they become even more powerful. Stick time (4D) into the mix and we're starting to get somewhere. Get the models to a ‘Fit for Construction’ and you’ve cracked it. The aim of the presentation is to follow the data and the geometry from the design phase right through to construction on-site. To demonstrate how structured data and geometry when properly verified can be leveraged by design, planning, and through to on-site construction to ensure the project is delivered successfully. Throughout the levels of detail what do the various parties need? What does a planner want a level 3 model for? How much use is a level 1 model to a QS? What is the minimum amount of data they need? We will go through their requirements for successful delivery and demonstrate how they are leveraging the data and geometry day to day on the Hinkley project.

In 2000, the Dora River flash flood demolished part of Highway A5 in Northwestern Italy, and there were huge economic and environmental damages. In this session, Ativa Engineering will show the solution that was adopted to ensure road safety. The project includes the erection of the highway’s profile for 10 km, the construction of 3 viaducts, and the adjustment of all overpasses and underpasses to enable the safe flow of the flash flood. BIM (Building Information Modeling) has been around for more than a decade. Most firms and disciplines have already adopted it. Why aren’t we experiencing the promised ultimate profit of using it? This session will cover the main challenges facing each member of the BIM team. We’ll identify the challenges and discuss the means to avoid and overcome these issues. The class will go over examples encountered in our actual projects, discuss the extents of the damage created, and share the ways we overcame it.

IQL will show how there are different ways of working/interacting with the built environment and explain the integrated project delivery: client, project manager, and main contractor being 1 team with the same goal approach. We'll explain how we developed a strategy, managed the design, and delivered from concept design to project handover using different digital technologies at different stages. This class will demonstrate how we've created a strategy and EIR for a project that will run for the next 8 years and which will attract future tenants. We’ll show this from a project management point of view: management of the design stakeholders, management of design, BIM for master planning, quantification, the use of BIM for visualisation/VR, and BIM as a product to attract tenants. From a construction management view, we'll demonstrate trade design coordination, supply chain management/education, BIM on-site, 4D sequencing and construction optimisation, and BIM use for tenant engagement.

This class will discuss Jacobs Engineering Group’s implementation of AutoCAD Civil 3D software, which started a 3-year journey in preparation for the U.K. Building Information Modeling (BIM) mandate. We will discuss how Jacobs determined which project to use as a pilot, and identification of candidate projects for the early adopter schemes proposed for its U.K. Highways BIM implementation plan. We will talk through the issues faced and resolutions implemented, including the need to create standard subassemblies to enable the company to have greater control over models when compared to the out-of-the-box subassemblies, and the need to re-create them due to construction setting-out issues. The class will conclude with a discussion of the implementation of ProjectWise software on Jacobs’ BIM projects, developments with Bentley to improve the AutoCAD Civil 3D software integration to enable the industry to continue using AutoCAD Civil 3D software effectively, and the use of third-party software that is integrated into AutoCAD Civil 3D software to enable Jacobs to deliver all aspects of 3D. Import and update your subassemblies into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, and see the result in your corridor in the complete intelligent model in Autodesk® Navisworks® software. This class uses data and real-life examples of the Highway A4 construction project in The Netherlands.

In the design phase of infrastructure projects, automation of road design offers tremendous benefits to engineers. Passing from tedious, manual road-design checks to automatic checks speeds results, while reducing possible error sources. This class will introduce a new way of supporting collaboration between owners and operators through an openBIM approach. Dynamo for Civil 3D software enables the import of multiple LandXML files that were not necessarily developed in Civil 3D. Instead of using Civil 3D Design Criteria with a limited number of design parameters, Dynamo increases flexibility, checks more parameters, and creates automatic reports. When owners rely solely on Civil 3D and Dynamo, instead of external model checkers, they’re empowered to control the design with improved consistency by centralizing all aspects of road-design checking in one environment. This design check comprises the first step of a complete innovation path, eventually leading to a more comprehensive automation.

Grading on an aviation site is tricky; there are often competing needs and regulations that dictate multiple requirements in the same space. What's more is the inherent need for safety and measurability. Add to this the reality that most aviation facilities are landlocked and the grading required is not going to be solved by out-of-the-box solutions. This course will give examples of using the Subassembly Composer software to create custom grading subassemblies for use in AutoCAD Civil 3D software and the advanced grading that you can complete once in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. This workflow creates huge advantage to the end user, and speeds design changes and competing requirements on projects that are experiencing a rapid drop in investment (fee).

The data-rich attribution required for Building Information Modeling (BIM)-ready models often requires some level of customization so out-of-the-box objects can provide more value and represent level of development (LOD) stages throughout the project lifecycle. In this lab, we will progress through 4 distinct methods of creating custom attribution. We will start with block entities with attribution. Next, we will create custom properties via the Property Set utility. In method 3, we will turn geometry into a feature class and add custom data. And finally, we will use the tools in the Infrastructure Administrator to create an even more powerful geometry/data combination that will streamline some of the workflows that we just learned! In all of these examples, we will create, extract, and demonstrate data input/output flow for each method. As a final treat, we will jump into InfraWorks 360 software and learn the secret to making a custom feature class—now you don’t have to always put your wind-turbine models in the City Furniture type class!
