The opportunity to capitalize on InfraWorks software as the palette to combine many disparate data sets together is never more evident or valuable than the ability to pull Esri geographic information system (GIS) data from readily available sources and combine that with mobile mapping data that is captured for asset inventory or design survey projects to build a comprehensive data set using all the best available sources. This class will demonstrate how to pull utility and sign information from separate GIS databases into InfraWorks, then pull in mobile mapping data from the same area, and combine the 2 for asset verification and change management. From there, full feature extraction will be completed on the LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) point cloud, with these attributed features stored back in the appropriate GIS databases.

This presentation will explore the process and workflow of a BIM Coordinator before, during, and after construction. Have you ever found yourself working on an architecture, engineering, and construction project with incomplete information about the existing conditions around which you will install new work? In this class, we will explore laser-scanning reality capture workflows that bring honest and accurate measurements to the drafting and coordination tables. This class will focus on needs for implementing laser scanning on your jobsite. We will look at the setup, challenges, and time requirements of using laser scanners on jobsites. Then we will look at postprocessing techniques where raw data is transformed into a coherent point cloud. Next, we will explore the combination point cloud / photo collection product via ReCap software. Last, we will see how to pull the point cloud into design software like Revit software and AutoCAD software for modeling purposes, and how to overlay the point cloud onto 3D models of building elements through Navisworks software and ReCap software (we will review the ReCap software capability to represent models within the photosphere view).

In this class, we will discuss a workflow to document and record cultural heritage sites using 3D data capture and Autodesk software. We will discuss integrated surveying techniques and software, including AutoCAD software, ReCap software, and 3ds Max software, used to document these sites for the next generations. Case studies will address the challenges of integrating aerial scans, terrestrial laser scans, and ground structure-from-motion photography, including working in confined spaces. We will also highlight the value of the data products for managing these important sites. FalconViz will share how the advancement of acquisition and scanning techniques is leading to new ways of fully documenting cultural heritage sites, rather than 2D hand sketching and standard photographing.

The main goal of this class is to walk attendees through the complete workflow of scanning the pressroom and basement at our FCA Sterling Stamping Plant located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. We’ll compare general baseline scanning to more-detailed equipment scanning. Participants will learn how scan data is collected, post processed, aligned, exported, decimated, segmented, and combined over time to create and maintain one virtual model of the largest stamping plant in the world. A key benefit of this class: sharing important ReCap software features and proposed ideas that can improve functionality and save post-processing time.

Poised to have an economic impact of between $80 and $90 billion (according to a CNN Money article), these unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will become a fast-developing part of our architecture, engineering, and construction industry. First, we will go over the potential uses for different disciplines. We will also discuss what the current and developing FAA or local guidelines, laws, and/or jurisdictions are for commercial use. Get tips regarding how to maneuver around your target—whether it is a site, building, or group of objects—for the most effective and safest results. Safety should always be top priority. We will go over the different types of drones, capabilities, and accessories, and we'll talk about camera resolutions. Then we will use ReCap software to generate an object, building, or surface point cloud. From there we will edit our cloud before exporting out for use in AutoCAD software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software (tips regarding how to locate in real-world coordinates), Revit software, Navisworks project review software, or even 3ds Max software.

This class will cover data-gathering methods related to utility design. Typical data gathering may include topo survey, photos, and site visits. The future of making things includes using all the available methods to gather previously unreachable data and importing it into design. This is done using current methods, i.e., survey, incorporating 3D models from photogrammetry, LiDAR (light detection and ranging), GPR (ground penetrating radar), and electromagnetic locating. By using some or all of these technologies and harnessing them through Autodesk, Inc., software, we can present a view both above and below the ground, enabling designers to see things in a whole new way. This class will introduce basic capture concepts for LiDAR, GPR, photogrammetry, and electromagnetic locating to create a 3D model using ReCap software. We can import this ReCap software model into InfraWorks software to be incorporated into design. We will briefly go over using Autodesk 360 cloud-computing platform and Memento software as well.

We will explore the implementation of the scanning process of an entire Mexico City district and the impact that this process represents as a social-decision support tool. Urban planning has a special responsibility to represent societal needs. Using laser scanning technologies with a powerful 3D visualization tool like ReCap software, planners can generate and explain new ideas, and they can get more people involved in the planning phase. Information for urban planning must integrate all possible strategic information coming from different sources. In other words, the information must be accurate and updated and it should represent a high-fidelity 3D model of the city. In addition, when data is coming from different sources, the integration and management of this information plays a vital role for decision-making and urban planning at all levels of the society. In this lecture we will review the advances that laser scanning methods offer in urban planning for a more sustainable built environment.

We’ll cover the software and hardware used to develop and maintain a successful reality capture program. We’ll also cover the client and trade partner expectations that come into consideration when beginning a reality capture workflow. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is moving toward scanning as a standard, but we’ll discuss how to justify the high cost of reality capture in a way that’s easy for all levels to understand. We’ll provide our real-world workflow as it is exists on a $500 million project, what we’ve learned, and where we’ve succeeded.

This class shows you how to use InfraWorks software to create highly realistic and accurate context models for civil infrastructure projects that support a more efficient, productive, and collaborative design workflow. The class shows how to aggregate a variety of data sources in InfraWorks such as geospatial information, LiDAR data using ReCap software, design data from AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, and 3D models from Revit® and 3ds Max® software. Use ReCap to preprocess LiDAR data for other Autodesk applications. The class shows several real-world infrastructure projects where InfraWorks was used to support design and communication.

Laser scanning and flying drones can gather lots of data, but what can be done with it? Scanning for existing conditions is easy, but what about site monitoring, steel monitoring, concrete analysis, or installation comparison? Reality capture is often the fastest way to collect the information for these types of activities, but they have to be properly planned for, and strategies need to be in place so that time isn't wasted collecting data that won't be used. This session will focus on planning reality capture activities for success, and developing strategies for making sure the data can be turned into deliverables as quickly as possible.

This session will cover how SSOE Group has changed its delivery process on retrofit projects to reduce waste in the engineering and construction process as a standard of care for its clients. The key point of this entire process is reliance on the laser scan and all team members working with the data in ReCap software, Navisworks software, and the modeling platform (Revit software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, or AutoCAD software). We'll cover how to plan your projects for reality capture, and bust myths on what you can or can not do. We'll present training materials and how to plan for making sure your team is adequately trained when your project begins to ramp up. Last, we'll review how to slam dunk your client and/or contractor review meetings with reality capture data and be the talk of the preferred suppliers among your peers.

This class is designed for the surveyor, engineer, or planner who is interested in finding out more about incorporating the use of LiDAR data into their project lifecycle using products from Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate 2014. The class focuses on the key workflow processes for incorporating LiDAR data from data collection and review to planning and design. With the addition of ReCap™ software to the 2014 design suites, the ability to process and review LiDAR data has been incorporated into our project workflow. In this class, we begin by reviewing and editing a sample LiDAR dataset in ReCap. Next, we see how the data can be incorporated into planning stage visualization using InfraWorks™ software. Following InfraWorks, we see how the LiDAR data can be incorporated into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software and used for creating existing ground models for the basis of design using Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate.

Reality capture is becoming predominant in architectural, engineering, or construction work. Using the ReCap family of products and services in conjunction with Autodesk applications, it's now becoming very easy to design in context using as-built scanned data as a reference. This class teaches you how to take advantage of new workflows based on ReCap software for several use cases that are related to BIM, such as retrofitting a renovation, conceptual modeling, and so on, using both laser scanners and photographs.

The design of roadways is typically based on the development of an alignment, then a profile, and finally a typical section. Many users who design intersections, ramps, or widenings run into difficulties because the process in AutoCAD Civil 3D software assumes that the road edge profile is designed independently of the two centerlines. In this class, you will learn a technique that allows the use of the classic alignment–profile–section process to design a widening, a ramp, or the turning lanes of an intersection. This technique can be used for all types of corridors where the pavement edge elevations are to be controlled by a specified crossfall from another profile or surface.

DPR Construction has been using reality capture technology to help build an atypical and complicated office building in downtown Pasadena, California. In this class, the audiences will learn how DPR implements data from UAV and laser scanning, not only for typical deliverables, such as floor flatness/levelness analysis, but also for unique applications, such as shoring-wall deviation analysis, design-change feasibility study, and location of cores and drills for constructability review. With post-tension cables, hundreds of miles of conduits inside the concrete decks, and a fast-paced schedule, the project presents numerous challenges to overcome. However, by utilizing reality capture data in ReCap Pro software and AutoCAD software, the virtual design and construction (VDC) team has brought great value to the design and construction team, had positive impacts on overall project performance, and provided a big return on investment to the owner. The class will cover these use cases and lessons, and highlight tips and tricks for working with reality capture data.

With a facility's constant demand for upgrade, repair, and turnaround, highly accurate, yet efficient real-world measurements are an essential foundation for new design and organized asset management. One major technology, laser scanning, is becoming more of a standard rather than luxury within the plant design world. Over the past few years Autodesk has made significant strides in combining reality capture technologies natively into software products such as AutoCAD® software and Navisworks® software. This class provides live demonstrations and real user stories to review the latest enhancements for reality capture in the 2014 product portfolio as well as evaluate how the enhancements affect the AutoCAD plant design workflow.
