Gone are the days of relying solely upon in-situ mock-ups to generate issues and drive decision-making. With the emergence of the virtual mock-up and virtual reality solutions, mock-ups can now be generated much earlier in the coordination process, thus saving you time and money by driving the conversation earlier in the design phase. The purpose of this class is to demonstrate how utilizing lean construction methods and various tools (Navisworks software, Revit software, AutoCAD software, and 3ds Max software) coupled with virtual reality tools can enable you to guide the design and owner groups into making meaningful and educated design changes early in the design phase. Through the review of multiple case studies we will demonstrate the cost-benefit analysis of each type of mock-up, as well as determine which types of information we can obtain from each.

Robert Ostermann (Magna Steyr Graz) and David Reaume (Autodesk) will present how easy it can be to create a 3D representation of an existing factory campus that contains and combines infrastructure, building, factory, and asset data. This integrated model enriched by real-time data will help all stakeholders to easily fulfill their different tasks in a perfect manner. To come to this valuable integrated model, you'd need a qualified data strategy and structure, behind which will be the DNA of this model. A short introduction about this process will be part of this presentation as well.

Many Autodesk products support a C# API, Revit software, AutoCAD software, 3ds Max software, and Maya software, just to name a few. One of the advantages of C# is excellent support for pure functional programming. In this class, I will teach you how we can use functional programming techniques to transform what has traditionally been considered complex problems for high-performance, 3D graphics programming into relatively simple problems that are easier to solve and require less code. We will demonstrate this using a number of examples from open-source libraries that are being used to solve some real-world, large-scale geometry processing problems. In this class you will learn how to present and evaluate simulation data for computer-generated and scanned environments by using Autodesk, Inc.’s, latest real-time technology, Stingray software. We will use Autodesk’s cloud offering ReCap Photo software to capture real-world data using drone flights and GoPro, Inc., videos, and we’ll prepare models and textures using 3ds Max software and Memento software. You can use the captured environment for simulation and in-context display of Building Information Modeling (BIM) data sets, which we will present using Stingray—a real-time engine that is capable of not only creating interactive story telling, but can also be used to create virtual reality experiences on mobile, web, and desktop platforms.

Learn to procedurally create any kind of physically based rendering (PBR) material with Substance Designer. This will enable you to create physically based materials that not only look believable, but also materials that tile perfectly when rendered. In this class you'll learn how to create some basic materials, and how to translate them into the major rendering applications including: mental ray rendering machine, NVIDIA’s Iray rendering engine, Chaos Group's V-Ray rendering engine, and A360 cloud-based collaboration service. We will also touch on creating material definition language (MDL) materials by using Iray directly inside Substance Designer. While all that may sound difficult, continuous advancements in 3D tools are making it possible for you to create real-time, VR-ready projects in less time - and in a cost-effective way.

Most real-time rendering programs that let you bring in your Revit projects show amazing graphics-however, they are limited to one "moment" in time and therefore capture only a near-static project with very little physics or interaction-until now. With Autodesk Live (Revit software's real-time rendering viewer) and a little spice from the Stingray game engine, your projects will become living, breathing buildings as they were meant to be. And it's possible to easily add "the extra spice," such as moving elevators, people, and medical equipment, and supporting vehicle construction equipment. In this class, attendees will learn to use the real-time rendering of Autodesk Live, and learn how to bring Revit models into it. Also, attendees will learn how to bring Autodesk Live models into Stingray to add that extra spice to projects by using real-time rendering and real-time physics.

The class will go through the different steps of developments of a virtual-reality (VR) experience applied to the field of architecture and real estate. The class will discuss planning, scripting, storyboarding, prototyping, shooting for VR content, shooting aerial content for VR, producing 3D computer-generated content, and tracking live-action spherical content for VR. Its not just AutoCAD anymore - the Design Automation API now includes Revit and Inventor. This class presents an introduction to newly expanded Forge Design Automation API. Members of the Revit, AutoCAD and Inventor Design Automation teams will discuss the general API architecture, specific implementation details and examples for automating the three products separately and in concert. During this presentation, you’ll learn how to start using the Arnold rendering engine that is part of 3ds Max software. Lighting is a crucial element in architectural design. Based off an imported Revit file, you’ll learn what kinds of lights Arnold offers to help tell the story of your design. Besides exploring different Arnold lighting techniques, you’ll get a much better understanding of the most important Arnold render settings. This will include the advantage of NVIDIA’s RTX-based technology, which will help denoise your image in a split second. We’ll also explain the Arnold standard surface material to give you a much better understanding of the next step in the world of 3ds Max materials. The presentation will end with some smart vegetation techniques that don’t slow down your Arnold rendering at all.

In this class, you’ll learn how to approach creation challenges in a procedural manner. We’ll use the creation of a roller coaster ride to see how fast you can iterate when procedural tools are built to help model complex systems such as roller coaster models. We’ll also see how to create virtual reality (VR) experiences from the roller coasters that we’ll create. We’ll see how fast we can experience, change, and experience again the rides, enabling for quick in-context turnarounds at the design level. We’ll use 3ds Max software’s creation graph to create procedural models and animations, then we’ll use Stingray game engine to build the VR experience. And since experience is key in VR, we’ll study some tricks to enhance the environment with various types of animated assets. This session features 3ds Max and Autodesk Stingray. AIA Approved
