This infrastructure symposium session is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) discussion focused on effective practices between owners and the engineering ecosystem regarding large transportation projects. For many within the oil and gas sector, being able to track and store asset data is paramount in calculating and verifying the maximum operating pressures (MOP) of pipeline infrastructure. This class defines how AutoCAD Plant 3D software can be used to build a facility model to house specific asset data and then use that data to calculate MOP information for a given segment of the facility piping or for the facility as a whole. This data set can then be used for regulatory audits and compliance assurance. Once a site model has been completed, it can then be used for future design changes and infrastructure management.

BuildingSMART International describes itself as the industry body driving the digital transformation of the built-asset industry, committed to the creation and adoption of open standards and solutions for infrastructure and buildings. While the buildings sector has been relatively well served by buildingSMART’s Industry Foundation Class (IFC) standards for more than 10 years, the infrastructure industry has had limited support. A program of developments under the buildingSMART InfraRoom is preparing new schemas for roads, bridges, ports, and waterways and tunnels, with the RailRoom preparing a new schema for rail working on the harmonization of the common asset types, testing, and deployment project. Autodesk has supported the development of the new schemas that are scheduled for release in 2021. This presentation will highlight the InfraRoom projects, industry engagement activities, and some early concept implementations of schemas within Autodesk software.

The only way to meet this demand today, and for future generations, is to invest heavily in the UK's rail infrastructure. However, in today’s economic climate, rail infrastructure owners have to spend available capital wisely and ensure better outcomes, based on quality design and construction. This class looks at how UK rail infrastructure owners are adopting Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a key enabler to making informed business decisions throughout the life of the asset, based on accurate, complete, and unambiguous information. This course will present a series of "how to" and "how come" case studies on using Forma to expand contextual understanding of architectural design. Where Revit excels at designing with the building envelop in, Forma excels at connecting building design to a broader context. Specifically, this is where working with Forma opens a new mode of architectural exploration with an emphasis on outcome-based design thinking. Forma allows the construction and analysis of a series of complex site-based issues: topography and existing conditions, environmental factors, infrastructure, and geographic data (GIS). This is then combined with multiple design proposals to study impact on energy, accessibility and circulation, embodied carbon, and the visceral connection between the building and site that can only be resolved through iterative, simulated explorations.

This session will walk through how catchments or watersheds can be automatically generated using a surface model and assigned to drainage networks as part of a concept design in Civil 3D software. Ultimately, with the Civil 3D InfoDrainage integration tool, we'll show how you can bring all the data across to InfoDrainage and use its more extensive runoff routing methods and rainfall generation tools to set up and simulate hydrology, and accurately size up the drainage network.
