The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is undergoing a transformation in the way we design and construct our built environment. In this presentation, we will explore how integrating BIM and digital delivery can result in tangible efficiencies resulting in better decision making and savings in cost and schedule. Using a case study from a major $9 billion transportation project in the United States, we will look at the integration of technology, people, and processes, and how maximizing information management practices, Autodesk Forma, and Autodesk Platform Services can provide the results you need rather than accepting out-of-the-box solutions.

During this class, projects members of the TELT Infrastructure megaproject will explain how to improve operational efficiency with the support of the Autodesk Forma platform and different desktop software systems. Digital project delivery helps solve one of the main challenges of the construction project: collaboration. It does this by providing up-to-date information, documents, and models, and initiating the revision workflow and the process of the design problems on the platform. From reality capture to existing-condition modeling, from design authoring to design review, the JV has been able to embrace the benefit of constructing digitally before constructing in reality, thanks to the cloud collaboration.

Advanced building information modeling (BIM) processes require us to consider modeling with different lenses: personas interacting on a shared model extracting different BIM uses throughout the different project lifecycle stages. We'll look at the specific case of "tunnel ring segment” modeling and all the phases that have been conducted to a Revit model that is open, universal, and fully parametric so it can be used from bidding to execution and from planners to fabricators. The class will show how Bouygues Travaux Publics went from collecting users' needs to formalizing a specification and developing a Revit family and all its applications in Revit, InfraWorks, Navisworks, and Autodesk Forma. We'll focus on the benefits realized with the application in a project now in the construction phase.

To overcome this challenge, we used Autodesk Forma to build a connected ecosystem that helps the delivery team manage their single source of truth and exchange information with internal and external stakeholders seamlessly. In this class, you'll learn how we capitalized on Autodesk Forma to build a scalable ecosystem for managing multiproject frameworks. You'll gain insights into our strategy for structuring information, automating workflows, and ensuring consistency across all projects. Additionally, you'll learn about the benefits of Autodesk Forma as compared to BIM 360, including improved collaboration, increased efficiency, and reduced risk.

Due to their nature, rail infrastructure projects greatly benefit from the adoption of workflows based on intelligent models and point clouds to allow off-site analyses without the need of the physical presence on the field. FSTechnology, a division of the Italian Railways, set up this workflow based on an integration of Autodesk software—including Autodesk Forma, Revit software, and Civil 3D software—with Esri ArcGIS GeoBIM. We combined CAD, building information modeling (BIM), point clouds, and orthophotos with geographic information system (GIS) and game engine technologies and added the construction program in a browser-based 4D solution with issue tracking. This is not only intended to monitor the progress of the physical works being executed, but also to achieve better control during the maintenance phase of the railways. All these combined and advanced technologies help us to monitor the most-critical infrastructures like viaducts and bridges, and factors of environmental interest and relevance, supported by artificial intelligence.

The 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes in New Zealand decimated a city full of 500,000 people. Government and residents required fast and decisive action. Twelve years later, the rebuild continues. What would this city's rebuild look like now with all the new technology applied? Could we respond more rapidly? Could the city be carbon neutral? Would we focus on the same projects? Would the projects look different if we measured embodied carbon? Would we have greater collaboration and data analytics capture and use? Would we gain efficiencies? We will explore all this in this class. We'll have a recap of the event, the damage, the decisions made that set the ground for the next 20+ years of work, and how we might approach the planning, design, delivery, and future of the city and its anchor projects if we could do it all again. We'll explore and demonstrate key workflows, processes, data-informed decision making, and software with some of the real-world design-and-built projects. We will explore the implementation of InfraWorks software, Autodesk Forma, Dynamo, ReCap software, Autodesk Forma Pro, and Insight X and share our ideas for the future.

In this session, we'll walk through a complete workflow starting inside ReCap Pro software, and publishing a point cloud to the Autodesk Forma platform. We'll extract linear features and bring them into Civil 3D software so we can create a simplified but highly accurate surface model. From there, we will publish the linear features as as-built information to ArcGIS Online for everyone to use. This is a workflow you've been asking for!

Have you encountered any challenges when creating a site context 3D model for a new project or proposal without sufficient survey data? This class will focus on workflows that will enable you to better create, evaluate, and communicate conceptual designs using InfraWorks software, Civil 3D software, and Revit software. We'll demonstrate how to build concept models from scratch by using the InfraWorks Model Builder tool, and we'll make modifications to the surface in InfraWorks by using imported 2D layout data from AutoCAD software and Civil 3D. Also, we will show the bidirectional workflow between Civil 3D and InfraWorks for grading design options and exporting out as IMX from InfraWorks to Civil 3D and converting them as toposurface in Revit for site work via publishing surfaces and linking topography to and from Autodesk Forma. Finally, we will cover the best practices to append the InfraWorks-exported FBX into Navisworks software for federated model with collaboration options like Autodesk Forma/BIM 360 and Shared View/web view links.

This will be a discussion about the impact an owner representative and client advocate—who is also a virtual design and construction (VDC) manager—employed specifically for engagement, collaboration, and leadership can have on a project team. Discover how we addressed design collaboration and seamless coordination among numerous designers and contractors in the world's longest immersed tunnel. During the basic design, 700+ models were created in Revit software to define complex elements like fire safety, lighting, ventilation, electrical, and ICA systems. To expedite progress, we implemented automations with Dynamo to swiftly model repetitive elements along the tunnel alignments. This helped us achieve a 70% time reduction in modeling and production costs. Autodesk Forma has been used primarily for collaboration and connectivity of Revit projects. While the Civil 3D-using industry still relies on other methods for storing project files, Autodesk Forma offers faster and more efficient working experiences by allowing you to download only the files you need and providing the latest files to collaborators. Autodesk Forma is beneficial for large-scale projects involving multiple firms, but even our small to mid-size land development projects at Kimley-Horn have found value in using Autodesk Forma. While it's now fully functional for Civil 3D, you may still be wondering: What's in it for me? Does it really help with collaboration? What's the risk in putting my files in Autodesk Forma? We've all heard gloomy statistics about the challenge of finding skilled talent in today's market—and civil design and construction are no exception. Couple this with the trending demand for 3–7D model deliverables and ISO compliance that more clients are requiring, and it's no surprise that many firms are asking, "Can we do more with less, sustainably?" To that end, most know of Dynamo and its incredible potential to automate repetitive tasks, saving valuable time and money. And some have at least heard of the relative newcomer, the Standardized Data Tool for Civil 3D software, and its ability to aggregate, manipulate, and analyze project data from multiple drawings through a single spreadsheet. Now it's time to combine these powerful tools in the context of design workflows. In this session, we'll demonstrate three examples of how well these tools complement each other, highlighting the latest Dynamo nodes along the way. By the end, you'll be inspired to start thinking of how you can use both tools at your firm.

This session will explain the latest volcanic episodes in Iceland—a constant threat to nearby town and infrastructure in the Reykjanes Peninsula. In November 2023, the 4,000-person town of Grindavík was evacuated. Working in close cooperation with the Civil Protection of Iceland, Verkís designed and managed the construction of lava diversion barriers to protect the 225 MW geothermal power plants at Svartsengi, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, and Grindavík. HEC-RAS was used to model lava flows using the latest topographical drone mapping of the surface and fresh lava. The barriers were designed and modeled in Civil 3D software, and Autodesk Forma was used to communicate design and stakeout data to multiple contractors. This study will show how the barrier design was optimized during the volcanic eruption by comparing theoretical models against actual lava flow behavior. Now 11 km of massive lava barriers have been built, which worked successfully against the lava flow and saved the town of Grindavík.

In the architectural and engineering world, it's a challenge to integrate Rhino software for early design stages with Revit software for detailed design, collaboration, and documentation. Rhino excels in modeling intricate geometries. Revit has powerful information modeling capabilities. Revit is commonly used as the primary delivery platform. Bridging these platforms is critical for optimizing productivity. Our approach uses data exchange, through Dynamo, to seamlessly connect Rhino and Revit. We'll showcase how this integration facilitates fluid geometry exchange between the programs, and empowers users to generate native model elements directly from Rhino geometry in Revit. We'll explore precise data-structuring techniques, and provide invaluable tips for achieving seamless interoperability. Beyond technical details, our session will highlight broader benefits for architectural practices, including enhanced project collaboration, streamlined design processes, and expedited decision making with Autodesk Forma at its core.
