Bayer is creating—together with its partners—a virtual environment to enable training on packaging lines in virtual reality (VR). The goal is to efficiently deal with existing production issues to prevent bigger mistakes or even production downtime. The benefits of VR are that trainees don’t have to enter production areas (clean rooms), can make mistakes without any impact on production, and are never at risk.

Whether we realize it or not, all of our clients are film critics. As video and animation become more essential to the architectural design process, it’s important that we have a basic understanding of filmmaking and cinematography. If a camera movement looks unnatural or the editing is slightly off, your client will notice and will be distracted, missing the key points you’re trying to convey. This course will provide an overview of basic filmmaking concepts that you can use to improve the quality of your architectural animations. You’ll discover the techniques and core concepts important to professional filmmakers, as well as how to apply them in the architectural profession. The class will cover the basics of filmmaking: framing, camera movement, music, and editing—all of which are critical to creating professional-looking films. In this lab you will learn about noise in rendered images, use a network trained to denoise sample images, and iterate and modify parameters improving the quality of the denoiser. This class will describe the benefits of dynamic Civil 3D design and living InfraWorks models. You will learn how to easily connect Civil 3D features to an InfraWorks model and publish for collaboration with engineers and stakeholders. As the design is progressing, the visualization updates for easy viewing and discussion. This simple process will impress management and clients alike. This workflow will decrease rounds of incremental edits during the feasibility and options phases of a project. The InfraWorks model makes it very easy to get quick measurements and volumes, and perform analysis. For many companies, it is important to work efficiently, show value in a process, and have ease of operation. Maintaining a living model checks all of those boxes.

Earlier in 2019 VW and Autodesk published a project collaboration envisioning a new concept for the original type 2 van, called the type 20. Extensively using Fusion 360 for generative design throughout the vehicle, this class will teach you how to maximize the benefits of starting shapes to control your generative design results and capture your design vision.

Generative design is transforming the way that products are created by providing design solutions that are efficient, resilient, and visually striking. When thinking of generative-design aesthetics, two approaches are commonly used. The first resembles bones that provide structure with minimal use of material. The second approach uses complex algorithmic patterns, similar to fractal geometries and procedural textures, which can be used as bodies or applied to surfaces. This class will explore easy-to-follow workflows for the creation and combination of structures and patterns in generative design. We will create efficient structures with Fusion 360 software’s Autodesk Generative Design tool. We’ll use Maya software’s MASH tool to create intricate procedural networks, which we’ll then bring into Fusion 360 for further refinement. The use of MASH is a novel and innovative approach, far easier to achieve than other tools such as Dynamo or Grasshopper.

This class will tell the complex story of delivering models and design drawings for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art currently under construction in Los Angeles, California. This flagship museum is pushing the boundaries of architectural design and delivery. Brendan Mullins of Stantec Architecture will explain the challenges of modeling and documenting the unique aesthetic of the building. He will share workflows for integrating Rhinoceros 3D and Revit software using computational design software Grasshopper and Dynamo. The intelligent model, a complex A360 Revit project, pushes the limits of what Revit can accomplish as a tool for fabrication of architectural components. The project didn’t have a printing budget, and was delivered paperless and coordinated using a combination of cloud-based platforms, including A360 and Bluebeam, while utilizing virtual reality and drawing tablets. Through examples and stories, Mr. Mullins will share the journey of delivering this innovative design.

Transitioning from a traditional workflow to a Building Information Modeling (BIM) process is a challenge-a challenge that requires problem solving, constant training, lateral thinking, skill developing, and lots of practice. There are many ways to spread this kind of knowledge, and a traditional approach may not be the more successful. Through the principles of L-D-A (lecture-demo-action) and game design techniques, this class will explore a different approach to teaching BIM through the gamification of a pathway that leads from the old ways of working to the new practice. This is suitable not only for architects, but also for owners and operators who want to approach the subject of BIM through an engaging, effective way.

In this hands-on lab, we'll walk you through a concrete project workflow using GRAITEC Reinforced Concrete BIM Designers for Revit and a connected structural BIM workflow to take advantage of automation offered by BIM. You'll use Reinforced Concrete BIM Designers for Revit to automatically generate code-checked, 3D rebar cages for columns, beams, and footings of your Revit project, applying the ACI codes. You'll explore the achieved results and how you can manipulate them to a variety of situations to suit your specific or regional needs. You'll use Reinforced Concrete BIM Designers to generate engineering-approved design reports, automatically produce and fine-tune detailed drawing views, and complete bar schedules-all from Revit software. Finally, you'll create sheets and finish off the detail using some tools from the GRAITEC PowerPack for Revit, and you'll publish the documentation in BIM 360 Docs software to manage revision control.

In this intermediary class I will show practical examples of my workflow for producing concept art. My workflow combines both 2D painting and 3D rendering to produce the most detailed images possible in the shortest amount of time. I have split up my image-making process into 20 stages, starting with rough 2D sketches and photobashing. I then move on to rough 3D and then a more detailed 3D stage, followed by a final 2D stage of painting tiny details and compositing the final image. Whether or not you're a concept artist for visual effects, animated films, or video games, you'll gain insight into techniques that can help your own process. We will primarily use Adobe Photoshop, 3ds Max software, Chaos Group's V-Ray rendering engine, and Red Giant Software's Magic Bullet—but you can apply the principals discussed to the software of your choice.

In this interactive lab, we'll learn how to navigate BIM 360 software and become Collaboration for Revit experts. We'll learn how to create collaborative projects, how to invite project contributors, and how to navigate the model in the cloud. Once we create the model, we'll learn how to publish the model for Live Reviews. We'll also review the cloud and mobile capabilities that BIM 360 Team software provides for expanded engagement from all users. We'll also review unique Collaboration for Revit features such as the Communicator, and we'll practice communicating with the project team within Revit software. In addition, we'll review how to effectively manage project contributors versus team members. Finally, we'll review how to troubleshoot with cloud Revit files by reviewing Journal Files. At the end of the class, you will be the new Collaboration for Revit and BIM 360 expert. You will be able to host Revit models to the cloud for projects, communicate with the project team effectively, and invite the team to your projects.

In today's design industry, 3D visualization has become an important part of the practice. Media and entertainment studios have long developed compositing techniques for their renderings, a method in which visual elements from a 3D scene are sent out as separate elements and stylistically reassembled through a compositing program into a single image. However, in the architecture design industry, these techniques are little known or typically practiced to a very limited degree using available software such as Adobe® Photoshop®. There exists a common misconception that a Hollywood-like compositing workflow is too expensive or beyond their reach. For architectural companies that have 3ds Max® software, a powerful compositing program called Autodesk® Composite is already inherently available.
