The Joint Commission is a not-for-profit organization that certifies close to 80% of US hospitals. The Joint Commission surveyors determine compliance with a broad range of hospital standards, such as the environment of care, emergency management, infection control, and medication management. An important aspect of the on-site survey is the ability to satisfy the surveyor’s questions and produce corresponding documentation regarding compliance of any asset and its ongoing maintenance. With the complexities of current health care facilities, the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based processes in design and construction is becoming the standard. This industry trend is something that can benefit the facilities management professionals, but in order to capture the potential value, there are certain things that need to be understood about the process and how to exploit it. Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) is the gold standard for planning and executing capital construction projects and has been proven to deliver superior results in safety, schedule, and budget. This discussion involves a case study of how an EPC provider, APTIM, implemented AWP practices, selected software packages to support workflows, and leveraged internal stakeholders to drive adoption. The pace of key workflows such as workface planning and creation of installation work packages was immediately accelerated by the use of a platform of point solutions which includes iConstruct and BIM 360 for work packaging and the use of PlanGrid to visualize the work packages and drawings in the field. The involvement of stakeholders such as middle management and project foremen is highlighted as a key success factor. The combination of process, software, and motivated project staff resulted in a 50% improvement in the “time on tools” as measured by an independent audit conducted by ConstructX.

This class will demonstrate a workflow where the 3D intelligent model in Revit software serves as a central hub for setting up the analysis and design of buildings in construction engineering. The analytical model in Revit is enhanced with additional properties beyond the already existing analytical properties; the analysis and the design of members is controlled and organized directly within Revit. We are also going to demonstrate how different analysis variants can be set up within different views, like setting up a 3D model for dynamic analysis, separated 2D slab models for calculating the vertical load transfer, or local models for detailed analysis. As all this information is stored within the Revit database, consistency is ensured, structural information can be combined with other data in the intelligent model, and all information can be shared with others via Collaboration for Revit and BIM 360 software.

Go beyond the standard “globular” shapes for equipment in AutoCAD Plant 3D software and harness the alternative options to convey your piping design more accurately. We will work on understanding the ins and outs involved when using standard equipment, but also get in depth with options of creating more-complex 3D solids or bringing in designs from outside sources. Finally, for equipment configurations that constantly change during project design, use the power of AutoCAD software’s external references (xref) to keep your designs up to date with the latest changes to the equipment.

This class will present the final detailed analysis and shop drawing production of Africa’s longest cable-stayed bridge over the river Bouregreg in Morocco. EGIS was responsible for delivering the shop drawings of the bridge based on their competences in this domain built through similar challenging projects. Autodesk, Inc., products were decisive. The complexity of the bridge—particularly of its pylons and cables—was very challenging, making a 3D model necessary to take into account the different details that were impossible to do in a 2D drawing. For example, the diameter of the cables in 3D and their pre-stressed state was modeled in order to carry out clash detection between cables. Thanks to a comprehensive 3D parametric model in Inventor software, anomalies that would have otherwise created rework and delays during construction were detected and corrected. The interoperability among Autodesk Solutions made it easier to collaborate with other teams and respect the deadline.

Industrialized construction is becoming more important than ever, considering current housing shortages and a decline in skilled labor. Optimizing factory processes is thus essential for productivity; however, changes to lines can be both expensive and disruptive. In this presentation we will demonstrate how a process-based digital twin can help to analyze and optimize a factory. First, a factory information model is created using discrete event simulation and virtual reality. This model is then updated using a variety of sensors that can measure baseline performance. Together, the model and sensors produce a digital twin of a factory that serves as a virtual test bed for evaluating the manufacturing process and optimizing factory layout and resource allocation to mitigate any adverse effects. We’ll share preliminary results from an ongoing project to integrate energy efficiency technologies into modular buildings with little or no additional lead time and first cost.
