The Meisi Lake City Island is the world’s largest twin-helix steel structure. It is very difficult to install elements onto the site precisely with traditional methods. Working with BIM 360 Glue software and Point Layout software, users can generate the set points from Building Information Modeling (BIM) models directly, laying out the data with the total station automatically. The class will show the best practice to set the points to space elements, and run the site survey with a standards procedure. We’ll also show how to get the site position with a total station, and compare the installation results with original BIM model for quality audit. The economic and social value is to eliminate deviation of manual centering, and improve mapping precision; decrease quantity of surveyors with automatic robot, improve mapping efficiency, and shorten working period; and reduce surveying works at high altitudes, and thereby improve safety management. If you really want to step up your grading game, then this is the class for you. We will be uncovering some of the most creative ways to grade your site that you haven’t seen before. We designed our proven workflows to remain flexible over the lifecycle of a project, despite the inevitable changes that occur during the design process. The first half of the presentation will cover corridors from feature lines. While this may seem basic, we will share several tricks that can dramatically reduce the time needed to produce a highly detailed site. The latter half of the class will take things to the next level, so please try to keep up. We will demonstrate how to utilize profiles generated from a plane surface to produce our site. Most attendees may be unfamiliar with this, but we are confident you will want to go back to your room to replicate it immediately after you leave this demo. How does a team with a great idea for a new hardware product navigate the challenges of prototyping, sourcing, testing, validation, contract manufacturing, production scaling, distribution, logistics and retail. This presentation aims to capture some objective numbers on what it takes to start a scalable hardware business.

The project has been a full lean–Building Information Modeling (BIM) project, using Revit Server application and industry foundation classes (IFC). Both landscape and architect (Snøhetta) and structural and technical design (Rambøll) have been working in Revit software “live” with Revit Server application across the country. There has been interdisciplinary checking with IFC and Solibri. The project has been managed using lean methodology and working both on shared models using Revit Server and also virtual design and construction (VDC) / Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE). The design methodology criteria was to provide models for lean construction with limited use of paper drawings and just-in-time principles at building site. The Norwegian Building Authority is the project owner and driver of expectations to utilize lean principles in the 3 phases of planning, design, and construction. The entire design group has been taught lean principles by Porsche Consulting in Germany. The class will cover experiences from all 3 project phases; explain success stories, challenges, and constructive learning points for collaboration; review “zero-failure methodology”; and more. The iLogic component in Autodesk Inventor software is very powerful in helping users automate segments of their design process. This class will show students five ways they can use iLogic that are not specific to any one design. We will start with an introduction to iLogic. Then, we will address five scenarios that the students could be facing and the iLogic rules that could be used to resolve the issues. We will discuss topics such as sheet metal extents, plot stamps, iProperties, saving as PDF, and exporting bills of materials.

Mixed reality (MR) combines virtual and physical realities into one space and offers an exciting new design opportunity for architects. By projecting the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model directly over the physical site in MR, architects can communicate design ideas to the team and clients in an immersive and interactive way. This session will demonstrate MR case studies, using Microsoft HoloLens, applied for different phases of architectural projects. We'll share our exploration regarding the process of precision alignment of a BIM model with the physical project site. We'll then use MR for virtual mockup and review of design options. Finally, we'll examine the potential of MR tools for construction administration and envision on-site MR clash detection using Microsoft HoloLens.

Mechanical motion is all around. From a simple door hinge to a car cylinder piston, it's easy to forget that even simple real-world motions can be complex operations in 3D animation software. This class will explore several methods for automating complex motion animation in 3ds Max 2018 software. Designers will learn how to wire parameters and import the assembly into 3ds Max, and how to create similar constraints using 3ds Max tools. You will learn strategies for building a hierarchy based on animation requirements, as well as basic parameter wiring and the setting up of links and inverse kinematics to mimic specific constraints. The class will step through multiple short lessons that let you animate specific moveable parts. Finally, attendees will see what advantages each tool has for different steps in the animation of complex motion.

Project Refinery graduated in April to become Generative Design in Revit 2021 software. This new suite of tools enables generative design workflows that automate the creation and analysis of design options directly in the Revit context. This briefing will showcase the value that generative design brings to the design process, and show how analyzing more data-backed design options leads to an enhanced design process.
